CES Announcement recap

Dear Pebblers,

Without any further ado, the moment you have all been waiting for has arrived – we’re thrilled to announce that we’ll begin shipping Pebble on January 23rd. We’ve been working very hard for the past year to deliver something that we’re truly proud of...and we know that we would not have been able to do it without the support of our Backers. So thank you!

We just wrapped up our live video demo of Pebble. You can review the video here: Please excuse the discolouring in the video; we will get that fixed up and reposted as soon as possible.

In addition to previously mentioned features, your Pebble will include the following sensors that we'll enable with future updates:

 · Magnetometer - we’ve added this in so you’ll have compass-like functionality

 · Ambient light sensors - your Pebble watch will be able to understand how much light is available in its current environment

Also, as many of you have speculated, we can confirm that Pebble uses a magnetic charging cable. This was done to help achieve a 5ATM water resistance rating, perfect for running in the rain, skiing, swimming and washing dishes! And one last fun and useful tool – the accelerometer we’ve built into the watch allows you simply to tap or flick your wrist to turn on the backlight.

We’re planning to continue our aggressive update cycle and ship new software updates every 2-3 weeks. Notably missing from our launch release is support for Runkeeper. We're working closely with RK and estimate that it should be enabled by the beginning of March. Sorry about that!

Thanks again, Pebblers!

Oh, I'd also like to debunk this 'water resistancy dynamic pressure' myth that I see everywhere. I'm a watch fiend. I have way too many. Most of them are dive watches. I'm constantly reading about this stuff. Here's the deal - Typical human behavior underwater - diving into the pool, swimming, wading, etc. all generates an inconsequential amount of additional dynamic pressure on top of the static pressure of the water at depth. If you're somehow able to move at 5m/sec (none of you can), you'd generate an additional .1 ATM of pressure on your watch. I can post the math if people don't believe me.

The real danger is the fact that it is unlikely that EVERY individual watch is pressure tested. Back in the day, before the tight tolerances we have today on items, this could vary widely from watch to watch- With today's CNC machining, etc,. there will be very, very little variation in this specification. It should be safe to say that 5ATM will be plenty to do all the things you want to do - swim, shower, even snorkeling without much to worry about. Just make sure to rinse well after exposure to salt water - and avoid submerging in soapy water as the lubricants and surfactants can more easily get past seals than good ol' h20.

That 300 feet is theoretical. I wouldnt hold your breath on that. Besides. If you're that far away, would you be able to hear the stereo?

As someone who backed on day 1, I'm excited to hopefully be in the first round of shipments. I'm also excited by the possibilities opened up by BT 4.0 when it is turned on. 4.0 has a range of 300 feet, which is OH SO MUCH more usable than 33. I can't be in my home office and control my S3 connected to my stereo in the living room for instance with 2.1. If I'm working out in my gym, I can leave my phone in my jacket on the coat hook and still be connected for whatever function that might serve- tabata timer or something. Good job guys.

@Lane If you live in the US they will be shipping to you from the US. If you are anywhere else in the world it will ship from China.

@caryrobins, the iphone app will be in the App Store, but isnt there yet. They said they will be manufacturing 15,000 a week, and it will take 6-8 weeks to manufacture them all.

    6. yuyo_79 on January 9, 2013

Can´t wait to have my Pebble!!!. Hope the shipments times to Mexico be quick

Did they say when the iPhone app will be available in the App Store?
Did they say how many will be manufactured per week, or when will they be _done_ shipping?

Wonder if they ship from U.S. or from manufacturing in China which may mean longer unless they're as quick as Apple.

Lane Sutton on January 9, 2013

Does anyone know about actual expected delivery dates after they ship out to the U.S.? Too bad we can't find our backer numbers or they didn't say how many they've produced.
Also curious if there's a 30ft limit to be away from your phone for Bluetooth to work and I assume the phone needs to be on, but the watch can likely function without the phone.

    10. Peter McAndrew on January 9, 2013

Okay, so the watch will probably arrive before the start of footy season. Now I just need them to release the developer kit so I can code up my timekeeping software (hopefully also before the start of footy season).

    11. Nicolas Van den Eynde on January 9, 2013

I applause the fact that you are building a "futureproof" hardware, other might have seen it a way to make more money on a "Pebble2" who would have featured things like bt 4.0, mag charging, magnetometer, etc... You guys rock !
I also think that you might get a ton of people wanting the transparent version of this watch, it is awesome !!

So 3 days ago when all the moaners were making comments, I said it. I bet these guys would announce extra functionality or ship it with a twine , to reward our patience. And they have come up with extra functionality. Well done Pebble team !! Keep up the good work.

    13. Elizabeth Vasquez on January 9, 2013

I'm alittle past that backer number. About what time frame do you think we'll get our watches? I cant wait!!!

    14. CaffeineJunkie on January 9, 2013

based on the backer numbers on the kicktraq website my backer number is somewhere between 24000 and 29000. The Pebble backers website lists me at 42000.

I'm guessing they have just grabbed the backer listing and are using that, Unfortunately, Kickstarter randomised the list so that you cannot use it to determine your place in the backing queue.

    15. Timur Pulathaneli on January 9, 2013

      how did you verify that?

    16. CaffeineJunkie on January 9, 2013

Timur, that website is completely wrong

      Cretster on January 9, 2013

That's my point about the water thing - it's ample for just about everyone in reality unless you're doing something like diving so I'm sure there's no need for concern at all.
My only concern while they've been doing the project really (from memory) is the long term longevity of the battery, e.g. how long will it likely be before it's charge lasts 3 days rather than 7? As long as the answer is along the lines of "Long enough that you won't care because by that point something even more cool & useful will be available" then I don't really care anyway. :o)

Awesome news that the Pebble is shipping! I love all the added features Wanted to know if any info is available on what watch type faces will be available or an easy GUI to create your own like a face with a tachometer, an animated tourbillon, a 3D type watch face with exposed gears animations?
Also what GPS type options may be added other then compass such as walkiung directions sent fm the smartphone.

    20. Natalie on January 9, 2013

Congratulations, Pebble team! I know I was one of the later backers so I'll still have some waiting to do, but I am absolutely THRILLED that we've gotten to MP and have a ship date. :D

    21. Sam Hotchkiss on January 9, 2013

Awesome! Are they going to be shipping in the order the backers joined?

Jason Beck on January 9, 2013

I would imagine only 0.0009% of you swim deeper than 5ft so calm down with the water resistance talk. Haha

    25. CaffeineJunkie on January 9, 2013

Important to note, that no water resistant watches should have their buttons pressed under water.

    26. Christopher Tran on January 9, 2013

5ATM is sufficient for shallow swimming. They never said they were making a watch for diving or advertise such.

    27. Missing avatar

      Cretster on January 9, 2013

Re' water resistance ratings, aren't they just the same protocols as any other watches? I've a few casios that I'm sure are specified as ATM ratings. I've never had a watch marked as 'water resistant' in any extent fail from swimming etc. Even ones sold as splashproof have been ok in the shower etc generally so I'm sure 5ATM is fine except for diving.

Re' all the stuff from the live stream though - superb news on all the goodies they've added in by way of sensors etc. Will only improve on an already groundbreaking product. Top work Pebble team! Delays aside (and regardless of your any views on that) I think they deserve a lot of kudos for adding all these extra functions in that weren't originally part of the product.

I am likely one of your older backers (about to be 67). I am proud of your team, Eric, and hope that everything goes well with the launch. You guys did a fine job on your press conference. I hope that the rest of the team retained their pre pebble skin color but blue does look ok on you (just kidding).

I'm pretty sure the team have each backers queue number by now.
It will be great if they willing to put the queue number on each backers' Pebble account.
Maybe with enough backers asking them this by email they will put backer's queue number in Pebble account.

Ok guys, here's a way to estimate when your Pebble will be shipped :

      1. Go through your email and find the payment authorization email from Amazon (will be the day that you backed)
      2. Go to the Pebble page on KickTraq
      3. Click on "Pledges & Backers by Day" tab
      4. On the 2nd graph, there is a graph of when people pledged. Use it to guesstimate your ship date. For instance, if you backed on 19 Apr, then there were ~29k people that pledged before you (12 Apr - 18 Apr sum). Assuming that they ship 15k per week, you'll be in the 2nd or 3rd group/week.

This is not an exact number, but it will give you an idea of where you'll be.

    33. Alan Wells on January 9, 2013

Awesome news, very excited to give it a try!

    34. Darren Keirle on January 9, 2013

      Why is the video mono?

    35. Troik on January 9, 2013

Please put the invoice OUTSIDE of the parcel, some countries in general and my town in particular have very strict customs laws.

    36. CaffeineJunkie on January 9, 2013

The waterproof ratings are a nightmare. 5 ATM (or 50 meters) does not mean you can swim at that depth, as movement through the water increases the pressure (quite considerably)

    37. Greg on January 9, 2013

Is there anyway I can find out what my backer # is on this project?

It's bluetooth, so about 10 meters under ideal conditions.

Great work !!! I've launched automobiles before, so I know how tough this is. Looking forward to playing with my Pebble. BTW, I thought the Magnetic Charging was awesome.

      Thank You !!!

    41. Jim Pearson on January 9, 2013

5 ATM should be perfectly fine for swimming, since 1 ATM is =33 feet. so 5x 33ft is...well, deeper than we swim for sure. I've used 1 or 3 ATM watches for swimming for years and they have been waterproof. Nice!

    42. August Sturm on January 9, 2013

      Awesome, great work Pebble Team!

    43. Gerald Schneider on January 9, 2013

I'm a little puzzled ... according to the English Wikipedia 5 ATM is suitable for swimming, according to the German Wikipedia 5 ATM is only suitable for showering, for swimming it has to be 10 ATM. So, is it suitable or not?
