CES Announcement recap

Dear Pebblers,

Without any further ado, the moment you have all been waiting for has arrived – we’re thrilled to announce that we’ll begin shipping Pebble on January 23rd. We’ve been working very hard for the past year to deliver something that we’re truly proud of...and we know that we would not have been able to do it without the support of our Backers. So thank you!

We just wrapped up our live video demo of Pebble. You can review the video here: http://new.livestream.com/accounts/2432013/CES2013/videos/8991209. Please excuse the discolouring in the video; we will get that fixed up and reposted as soon as possible.

In addition to previously mentioned features, your Pebble will include the following sensors that we'll enable with future updates:

 · Magnetometer - we’ve added this in so you’ll have compass-like functionality

 · Ambient light sensors - your Pebble watch will be able to understand how much light is available in its current environment

Also, as many of you have speculated, we can confirm that Pebble uses a magnetic charging cable. This was done to help achieve a 5ATM water resistance rating, perfect for running in the rain, skiing, swimming and washing dishes! And one last fun and useful tool – the accelerometer we’ve built into the watch allows you simply to tap or flick your wrist to turn on the backlight.

We’re planning to continue our aggressive update cycle and ship new software updates every 2-3 weeks. Notably missing from our launch release is support for Runkeeper. We're working closely with RK and estimate that it should be enabled by the beginning of March. Sorry about that!

Thanks again, Pebblers!
Eric + Team

      Like a cliff to waves
A watch in a glass erodes
      Pebble to a grain

      DHJ,

      Sawesome Auce!

    4. Creator Donald Hansen Jr. on January 14, 2013

I wonder how long a Pebble could last in a glass of water before it leaked. I want to see a test like the Bose 151 environmental speakers. Throw it in a fish tank, blow some bubbles at it, and see if it lasts 10 years. :D

    5. Creator CaffeineJunkie on January 14, 2013

Oh, and yes, it does keep time without being connected to a phone, and according to Pebble the time can be set on the watch if you need to.

    6. Creator CaffeineJunkie on January 14, 2013

Logan, nothing has ever been said about being able to toggle Wifi.
You can toggle the Bluetooth on the pebble itself (airplane mode) but being as to toggle the Bluetooth on the phone from the Pebble could only ever be an 'off' operation, as once Bluetooth is off no more communication could reach the phone from the Pebble.

    7. Creator Log22 on January 14, 2013

Anyone know if Pebble will be able to toggle things like WiFi or Bluetooth on and off? Also, can it be used just as a watch without being paired to a smartphone?

    8. Creator Gnutten Steinland on January 14, 2013

If I use the tool Iget post around 20k, and if I calculate my date according to kicktraq I end up around 40k. 20k would be nice because then I would be (hopefully) second week but 40 isn't that bad either. My calculations is end of Feb or beginning of March so hopefully I will have it by my birthday at middle of March =)

Have they said anything about how long it will take to ship to different places in the world? I hope it's not longer then a week or so.

    9. Creator HMC on January 14, 2013

It may haven been addressed so my apolgies but what happens when folks manage their pledges (I.e., increase or r decrease what they pledge for) does Kickstarter re-start their place of backer order?

    10. Creator Big Mac on January 13, 2013

      --- haiku alert ---

      Speculation rife
But no-one knows shit from clay.
      Best source CJ, right?

    11. Creator CaffeineJunkie on January 13, 2013

I fed three people who gave their backing date in to that website.
      Backed:
      11th April - 9447
      14th April - 18556
      16th April - 9232.
      It's just wrong.

The method suggested by Pebble refers to checking your backer date against the kicktraq website, which is the only way to gauge your position.

    12. Creator Seth Page on January 13, 2013

from where I am sitting the backers tab list looks right, and Pebble confirmed that it should give you an idea of where you are in line

    13. Creator Aymerick Dupouey on January 13, 2013

Are you sure about that ? and how do you know ?

    14. Creator CaffeineJunkie on January 13, 2013

The list in the backers tab is not the same order supplied to Eric and his team. They get the. In the correct order. The backers tab was deliberately randomised by Kickstarter.

    15. Creator Aymerick Dupouey on January 13, 2013

found my name in the list of the Backers tab, the duncanj is "correct" according to the list on kickstarter.
the kickstarter list is NOT in the right order, since the name after mine subscribed to kickstarter after the project start...

    16. Creator Aymerick Dupouey on January 13, 2013

About the tool given before to know wich spot we are at, it seems it's based on the Backer tab order the twitter account suggested that the list is in the right order....
      https://twitter.com/duncanj/status/282801553453228034

I have checked and since i'm a first day backer and according to this http://www.kicktraq.com/projects/597507018/pebble-e-paper-watch-for-iphone-and-android/#chart-daily i'm in the 7157 first ones ...

that tool tels i'm 26165... and since it's supposed to be based on the kickstarter list wich is the same used by Eric and his team.... i am affraid to get my pebble later than deserved !

    17. Creator Luis Bermudez on January 12, 2013

Sweet! Great job on press conferencing!

    18. Creator Frank Spencer on January 12, 2013

The pixely shots you refer too are most likely on scaled up images. Images in the same Size as the pebble screen are smooth as we have seen in the demos.

    19. Creator Christopher Palian on January 12, 2013

Does anyone know why some of the watch faces look pixely while some text looks amazing?

    20. Creator Daniel Batchelor on January 12, 2013

Extra charge cable will be available on Pebble's Shopify store as soon as they are ready. Response from Pebble via Twitter.

    21. Creator Baccchus on January 12, 2013

Hi Peter! I'm thinking to sell the Cookoo and possibly one Pebble as it stands, I have to say the Pebble does look good from the hands on reviews - they have managed to regain some confidence at least for me!

Unfortunately for me though I'll be home just ahead of when they might deliver, which will possibly mean I won't see them until April :(

Anyone backing 2 black Pebbles who's high up on the delivery list fancy swapping places with someone close to the very end? :)

    22. Creator Big Mac on January 12, 2013

G'day again Gary. You are probably not back home yet but, having seen the Pebble video and assuming it delivers what it promises, are you leaning more towards keeping your Cookoo and ebaying Pebble, or vice versa?

    23. Creator Big Mac on January 11, 2013

Yeah, Eric, fix that video as you promised so Casey can lie in bed with his iPad and enjoy you in your full natural glory. And make sure you lose sleep worrying about having to pay the royalties which in some unimaginable way seem to be coming out of Casey's pocket. Happy to have an inferior product a month later while you're attending to the above vital matters. I'm sure most backers agree.

    24. Creator Casey on January 11, 2013

When are you going to fix the video? Also, trim off the first 10 minutes and last 45 minutes so you just have the presentation. Also, unless you got permission to distribute those song recorded at the beginning, don't need the music industry knocking on your door for royalties!

    25. Creator Rich Hughes on January 11, 2013

Can't wait to get mine :)

    26. Creator James Brooks on January 11, 2013

So excited for the magnetic charging!

    27. Creator pzboyz on January 11, 2013

You can patent the specific physical design and maybe the specific purpose, but it does not stop other companies using this kind of attachment method. There is a lot or prior art for using magnets to keep two surfaces close together, look at your fridge and freezer doors.

    28. Creator Casey on January 10, 2013

I cannot understand how Apple got a patent for it's Magsafe connector. It's a UL standard! It has been used on kitchen appliances for many years.

    29. Creator Blayn on January 10, 2013

Thanks for the keynote announcement, I'm so excited!

I have a question regarding what I saw-
Is there a way to have notifications (in the form of the envelope, chat bubble, etc.) to be ever present? I'd love to take a glance at my pebble at any time and see I have unread email(s), or message(s). Is this part of configuration at this point?

      Thank you!

    30. Creator Paul Roodenburg on January 10, 2013

      Eric,
And of course the rest of the team :-) I tremendously enjoyed the press conference. And Eric you would look good in the Smurfs 3 ;-) And yes I agree a little practice in public speaking won't hurt but you pulled it of.
Great feeling to be part of this project and looking forward to provide you and your team with hands on feedback on the pebble software.

Never programmed a thing in my life but the SDK release will be a good start.

Thanks again for making it possible to be part of this journey and I am looking forward to the miles ahead.

    31. Creator Andrew Plumb on January 10, 2013

@JacoB - When it comes to patents, the only thing that matters is the wording of the independent claims, i.e. claim 1, 12, 24, 25, 32, 34. The preamble gives some context for the origin of the patent, but has little bearing on the (in)validity of the patent. As long as what Pebble has implemented "breaks" each independent claim in some way, the patent shouldn't apply.

For example, claim 1 requires that "the first and second connectors each comprise two axes of symmetry such that the first and second connectors couple together in only two orientations relative to one another". If the Pebble connector is asymmetric and/or can only be hooked up in one orientation, you can (likely) safely rule out violating that claim.

That's just a wild-guess-example of what might break the patent. Until I get my hands on mine I have no idea where (else) the patent may (not) apply.

Disclaimer: I-Am-Not-A-Lawyer and it has been a rather long time since my semiconductor reverse engineering & patent infringement analysis days. ;-)

    32. Creator Daniel Batchelor on January 10, 2013

Doesn't MS' Surface tablets use a magnetic connector? Anyways, I'm liking the look of the black Pebble with the charging cable connected to it. My first thought was I'd like to have an extra cable, but then it occurred to me that with a week long battery life and a two-hour charge time what exactly would I need more than one cable with regards to general charging - it's not like a smartphone which generally require at least a daily charge. I also expect this cable will stay married to my computer and I'll charge it while I'm working at it. I'll get an extra cable just to have on hand just in case it becomes damaged somehow (pinched, yanked, kids, cats, etc.). Random thoughts.

    33. Creator JacoB on January 10, 2013

      @Klotz

"An electrical plug and receptacle relying on magnetic force to maintain contact are disclosed."
Thankfully this isn't an electric plug either.

    34. Creator CaffeineJunkie on January 10, 2013

A deep fat fryer was sold years ago with a magnetic cable, so prior art exists.

    35. Creator Klotz Franck on January 10, 2013

      Hello JacoB,

      Patent is :

"An electrical plug and receptacle relying on magnetic force to maintain contact are disclosed. The plug and receptacle can be used as part of a power adapter for connecting an electronic device, such as a laptop computer, to a power supply."

Such as, is the key word, it is not limited to....

I really hope the best but have to see how this will evolve.

      Franck

    36. Creator Big Mac on January 10, 2013

Wonder how that wireless charging technology is going? Seems to me that Pebble's low power requirement and small battery might be well suited.

    37. Creator JacoB on January 10, 2013

According to your link, @Klotz, the MagSafe Patent is specifically for laptop computer AC/DC power adapters. No, I'm not a patent lawyer, but it seems to me that the Pebble is not a laptop computer.
      Relevant quote:
"The subject matter of the present disclosure particularly relates to a magnetic connector for a power adapter connecting a laptop computer to a power supply."

It's possible it was written that way so it doesn't violate someone else patent.

    38. Creator Klotz Franck on January 10, 2013

      @JoeO

MagSafe is an apple patent, and apple is not licensing this patent. This patent cover the use done by peeble watch and could be a potential issue. Apple is strongly going after any charger done this way, an no other computer in the market has a MagSafe type charging. There is a reason ....

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MagSafe

      Patent : http://patft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser…

I am also sure apple is working on wearable computer like a watch connected to iPhone ( but will it ship soon ? ), so peeble will not be allowed this patent infrigement for long. A Watch would also make more sense than a apple TV, since the shipping box would be small ( how many 55-65 inch TV can you really put in the back store of an apple store ? ), the market bigger, and also has an hallow effect to bring people to the apple ecosystems. Apple TV could come after a watch,.....

I really hope apple will not start creating problems to the peeble watch I backed, ... Time will tell.

I really like this new charging method...

      Thanks

    42. Creator amix on January 10, 2013

Just W.O.W ! :) A magnetormeter is really a good addition, my HTC One V lacks it. And having a light-sensor on a watch, that I carry with me all the time is also a great add-on! Serious stuff, guys (and gals) :)

    43. Creator Denis Ricard on January 10, 2013

Great presentation Eric, I enjoyed seeing Pebble in action and I appreciate your efforts for future proofing the watch. Great vision there and completely in the spirit of supporting the kickstarters. I'm impressed by your team.

It's just too bad that the colors of the video were off, but it's only a minor detail.

Watch the uploaded CES2013 video tonight! - WOW - Seeing the Pebble in action was fantastic.

Love all the different watch display types - am sure everyone who sees them will be intrigued by such a wonderfully designed device!

Awesome work Eric and team - can't wait for delivery date, all the way to Melbourne, Australia!

    45. Creator Frank Spencer on January 10, 2013

      @ David Odie,

You should have received 2 updates sent to you via e-mail notifying you of yesterdays announcement (Which was live)

The backers and press were informed of the Shipping date simultaneously.

    46. Creator Justin Steed on January 10, 2013

David - the BBC found it out from the press conference, which was streamed live on the site (and trailed well in advance). I don't see how you can say they didn't tell us first.

    47. Creator Marylou Egi on January 10, 2013

Sporty I have been amazed, entertained and educated to the process of development of this fun product! I hope you and your team are feeling proud of what your have accomplished. i am excited to get my Pebble. Yes, the clear one is very cool! Cheers Team!

    48. Creator David 依田 Odie on January 10, 2013

Rather disappointed that I found out about the shipping date from the BBC before I heard about it from you guys. You'd think that as the backers who made the project possible, we might be able to hear about the shipping date before the international news outlets. Even a simultaneous release would have been preferable to being told after the rest of the world.
