Pre-Production Samples + Video

(Can't see the video? Click here to view it on Vimeo)

Things are moving fast in Pebble land. We're progressing rapidly through our Engineering Verification test stages. We've been spending a lot of time in Asia working with our manufacturing team and the various vendor factories that are supplying parts for Pebble. Two weeks ago, we did a sample build of Pebble with the full assembly line. The output of that sample build was a few of the first assembly line manufactured Pebbles!

Pebble is not in mass production yet. These sample Pebbles are from an early pre-production test build. We only turned the assembly line on for one day to test the process.

One of the first Pebbles off the test assembly line. Check out the video above for a closer look!

A view of the test assembly line

Soldering the battery to the main printed circuit board (PCB)

You can view the high resolution versions of all these images and more in this album.

Environmental Testing

Now that we have more complete sample Pebbles to work with, we're beginning environmental testing. This means putting Pebble through its paces and seeing how the hardware holds up in a variety of everyday (and not so everyday) conditions. Here are just a few of the tests that Pebble is undergoing:

- salt water test
- water proofing test
- UV aging test
- Drop test
- Twist test with bands
- Lens impact test
- abrasion test
- button reliability test
- tension pull test with wrist straps installed

Antenna testing

We can confirm that the issue we were having with the antenna (Update 18) has been conquered! The latest samples have vastly improved range and meet all of our requirements. Originally, our design included a chip antenna (similar to this), a simple antenna that's easy to use. But after testing back in August showed degradation of the signal inside a test Pebble, we redesigned the radio-frequency (RF) path. We switched to a custom-built antenna solution that uses metal traces positioned to be higher above the bottom of the watch, allowing the RF signal to be clear of water-filled cylinder that is a human wrist.

2-3 test builds remaining before mass production

Before we get into mass production (ie manufacturing all 85,000 Pebbles), we have several more test builds to complete. A test build is when we get the whole assembly line into place and manufacture/assemble a batch (normally around 50-300) of Pebbles. These test builds give us the chance to test the end-to-end manufacturing process, catching problems, testing new solutions and eliminating bugs. These are our major opportunities to revise and fix any problems with the design or manufacturing process, so we're being extremely diligent and careful.

Testing different variations of batteries, vibrating motors and backlight modules

For example, we have several different vendors lined up to provide components for Pebble like the vibrating motor, battery and flexible printed circuit (FPC). In these test builds, we are qualifying each vendor's components and making sure that they are suitable for us to use. Having multiple vendors available for high risk components allows us to switch one component out for another in mass production if issues or delays arise with that specific part.

Color Pebbles

Check out the video to see a few samples of the color Pebbles. We aren't happy with the precise colors, so we're still working on tweaking the plastics. As soon as we're happy with the colors, we'll post high resolution photos in a future update.

T-shirts giveaway!

Here's your chance to get one of our cool 'Meet Pebble' t-shirts that I was wearing in the video. All you have to do is tell us what you're planning on doing with your Pebble ("Checking email while paragliding" or "Skipping music tracks from the bath tub" or even "Writing an app to control the sun..."). Post your answer in the comments section below. We'll choose our 10 favourite answers and give the responder a red or grey a 'meet pebble' t-shirt (their choice).

Thanks again for backing us, Pebblers!

Thinking about making (or using, if someone else beats me to it) two apps: One that gives you public transit departure times (like the countdown screens at stations, but on your wrist) and another that gives you your current location in my state's emergency services map books (both grid ref and page number).

the pebble watch was promised to my son for his 18th birthday, 12 september, he might stop nagging me about delivery if i can butter him up with a t shirt, he would love to show off wearing it as he's been bragging about this watch to his friends for a long time, lol :)

Yeah, I will certainly not touch the control to reboot the universe (at least not the one I'm living in ;)
But apart from the obvious thing like notifications (EMail, Feeds Headline) or quickly change the display brightness to a preset or switch through network (WLAN/GSM/3G Combos) presets I'd like to control something different. I think it would be fun to use the clock as a controller with free mapping, so any app can benefit from the control without the need of any software update. Could be fun to control games this way ;)

Reading the description I misunderstood the purpose of the T shirt contest but think I'll submit my answer, nonetheless.
I thought to provide a "quote for a T shirt DESIGN" for the Pebble: "Don't SKIP this @Pebble" design of T-shirt should have ripple effect centered on @Pebble radiating out ad-infinitum...

Develop an app that allows me to see the various devices in the specific range and send them random messages through my pebble's bluetooth function. It's like instant messaging but specific to the room. I think this would be great for networking :P kinda creepy though :S "i wanna talk to you im in the corner and sending you this message through my watch" <-- example message

I'm hoping to talk a buddy into writing a pebble app that will let me pick a destination and view a "estimated time to arrive" on the pebble, underneath the current time. Current location info gained from the iPhone gps, of course.

Like others, I definitely prefer waiting longer for a solid product rather than getting something that isn't ready for prime time. Thanks for making this happen!

I am glad you all are taking your time in manufacturing, I would rather wait for a great product than get a rushed watch that is not what we all want pebble to be.

It would be a daily use product for me. The fact that I can see who is calling, who texted me, emailed, etc. without pulling the phone out of my pocket I love it. I would love to have this product at a business meeting and see who is calling me or texting me while I have the phone on my pocket. I love to have the watch vibrate if I'm leaving my phone behind. I left a phone at a restaurant and someone was trying to keep it until the cops showed up the phone was handed back to me (true story)

I know this seems like a throw-away feature to many, but I love the idea of being able to leave my phone on silent and just have my watch vibrate. I usually leave my ringer off. (I'm a professor, and the only thing more embarrassing than having your phone go off when you're a student in class is having your phone go off when you're giving the lecture!) Because my ringer is always off, I miss tons of phone calls and text messages.

So what will I do with my Pebble? ANSWER THE DANG PHONE!

Looking at all those colors. Wouldn't it be a hit when we can buy an extra set of colors. When I look at it it seems to me that the color face is clicked / snapped on the housing. With other words it gives flexibility to an already awesome watch to make it even more desirable. What do you think ?

Best way to use the pebble I bought? Travel around the world with it...

    45. John Daniels on October 21, 2012

I want to write a TOTP app for the Pebble so you can use it like the Google Authenticator app for iOS and Android to do two-factor authentication at places like Dropbox. As long as developers get access to time, it shouldn't be too difficult, I think the hardest part will be entering in the key supplied by Dropbox/whoever.

I also have a project with a RaspberryPi where I want to have it ring an old-fashioned school bell when someone presses my doorbell - and also send a notification (using the web/'curl' API) to my watch so I know if someone's pressing the button even if I'm away from home.

Finally, I'm really looking forward to my wife wearing her own Pebble watch, since she never hears her phone ringing from the depths of her handbag and I can never get in touch with her when she's out!
