Orange Wins! + Manufacturing Prototype Photos

Voter's Choice

Without further ado, I'd like to present the Voter's Choice color....Orange! It won with almost 2000 out of more than 10,000 qualified votes.

I think it looks pretty snazzy! The exact color appearance may vary from this rendering as we work with our plastics supplier. And if you don't like orange, don't worry! As a color backer, you're entitled to pick any of the (now) 4 color options for each one of your Pebbles: Black, White, Red or Orange. We will send out a survey to request your selection later on in the project.

Manufacturing Update

The Pebble team has been bouncing back and forth between Palo Alto and Taipei a lot over the last 6 weeks. The factory that we selected has an R&D facility in Taipei while their main manufacturing and assembly locations are in China. Andrew, Steve and I have all travelled separately to Taipei to oversee the transition between the design and manufacturing stages of the project. In terms of our schedule, we're sticking pretty closely to an aggressive timetable we put together at the end of May (remember our first timetable was created before we launched on Kickstarter, when we were expecting to manufacture just 1,000 Pebbles). While we won't be able to start shipping Pebbles in September, our current schedule has us on track to go from manufacturing zero to 15,000 Pebbles per week as soon as possible.

Eric checking the power consumption of Pebble's backlight module

We're currently in a phase called Engineering Verification. During this phase, the factory produced samples of the entire product. We're currently evaluating each individual component (case, lens, circuit board, charge cable, etc) and we'll tweak the design as necessary. The design needs to be nearly perfect before we move into a phase called 'tooling' during which the factory creates hardened steel tools for injection molding Pebble's plastic components.

Prototype Lens

Remember our tiny printed circuit board (PCB) design from Update #15? Here it is in real life attached to our custom PCB test fixture.

Another key component in our design is a flexible printed circuit (FPC). See that empty space in the middle? That's where the battery fits in.

Tucked away in the manufacturing update was a "While we won't be able to start shipping Pebbles in September," care to set a new promise?

nice to see the project going, i am proud of being part in this great project.

Orange... undecided wether I love or hate the look shown in the rendering. Please show also the version with white wristband, maybe that'll convince me. But for now I guess (sadly) I'll take one white, one black *big sigh*

    5. Carl VanKell on July 24, 2012

Please don't wait for your next update to notify backers when shipping willstart. Keep us notified.

    6. Adam Favre on July 24, 2012

Can someone point me to the revised projected date for backers? Never figured Sept, but is there a "new" date?

    7. Drew Fleischer on July 24, 2012

Is there a way to upgrade to the awesome orange from the plain black level?

Oh and i just re-read the whole update, End of July and your tooling is not final, How the hell did you expect to deliver anything in September on that kind of timetable? To produce the amount you need too in the time you have, by a rough estimate i would say you need more than 1 mould (oops sarcasm) and even with a scrap ratio of 10% (being more than enough assuming that your lens supplier will only let perfect products through) at your current rate of advancement i predict 1st shipment December, and then after that the second shipment of watches that actually work and look ok February.
      Just my opinion.

Please give us a more specific timetable for shipment! I was looking forward to receiving this in September... :(

    10. Kristoffer Wessel on July 24, 2012

      @kit farman
i do not plan to lose my watch. since it is waterproof and should have pretty sweet battery life i probably won't take it of except when i am going to sleep. just me though. someone else might loose it. and yes, they may be glad for orange. but honestly, orange is pretty much the ugliest color there is, ecxept maybe certain hues of brown. i would have been glad for a cold (read: blueish) and very dark grey.

...just a tad disappointed at the almost aside remark about September delivery with no accurate delivery schedule. Without more precise information, even a pessimistic estimate, I feel that it appears we backers can just be strung along. Remember this is a business and as such should always over achieve not start by under achieving, ask yourself would this be acceptable in a traditionally funded company with an unquestionably clever product. I think it would be dead in the water had they dealt with starting deliveries in this manner. Come on Pebble get your business run in a businesslike manner, tech alone is never going to be enough.

    12. Kit Farman on July 24, 2012

Also THE STRAP IS INTERCHANGEABLE. Standard 22mm watch strap. You paid $140 for a watch, why not just spend the $5~10 extra for the strap color you want?

    13. Kyle Inglis on July 24, 2012

Great stuff! Will the orders be shipped in order people backed the project?

    14. Danielle Koontz on July 24, 2012

Are you sure the votes were counted correctly??? What an odd choice for the masses. It's like halloween on your wrist.

    15. Kit Farman on July 24, 2012

Also to the people complaining about orange: You'll be glad you picked it if you ever lose it!

    16. Kristoffer Wessel on July 24, 2012

orange is not a color. orange is a symptom.

    17. Jeff Croft on July 24, 2012

I also dig the orange but would prefer it with a white strap. As is, I'll probably just choose all-white instead of orange, because I don't really care for the orange-black combo. Nice job on choosing orange, though, backers! Love it! :)

    18. Sue Hines on July 24, 2012

Thanks for all the updates, I'm excited about the whole project and I'm very happy to be a backer and can't wait to get my pebbles! Is there any chance we will ever be able to purchase the other colors as attachable face plates in the future? I like the orange, but wasn't the color I was wanting to see win :) I love the idea of being able to change the colors like I do with my iPhone case, so matching my pebble up to it would be interesting.

Good news. They'll start shipping the day they are ready :)
I guess the pebble team is well aware that everyone wants to know the shipping date and if they don't tell now that's because it is undecided yet. So breathe and relax.

    20. Don Randall on July 24, 2012

Also HATE the orange....would have preferred pretty much any color over this ( well except for that Lime..)
But, bitching aside...psyched at the progress and would rather suffer a slight delay over than kicking them out for deadline needs alone. Pity there isn't a 5th choice ( or gun metal)
      Thanks for the update guys!

    21. Brett Stark on July 24, 2012

@ Josh Becker - I ordered a color choice, but I don't like the orange. I will be getting black instead, unless you can convince me to swap the orange for your black.

Marie Butcher on July 24, 2012

      Orange - not bad!
Why is the pic with a black strap only? In the poll you told us not to worry about the strap colour so we therefore assumed we'd at least get to vote on white or black. Personally I want orange with a white strap.

    23. Mark McCorkle on July 24, 2012

I'm just as excited to get my smart watch as everyone else here, and though the orange doesn't really speak to me, I'm glad there are options. I'm betting on an entire aftermarket of snap-on face overlays to show up as soon as the Pebble team releasees exact production measurements, so I'll stick with black for now and get decorative at that point.

Also, my first task will likely be to remove the band (snug plastic or rubber won't let your arm breath) -- so please make sure that I or my local watch repair guy can snap off the band with the proper tools.

Also, after your first run and fulfillment of the current orders, please consider creating an executive edition with brushed metal face and a matte finish on the screen. I'd pay double what I did for the kickstarter edition if I could wear it with my dress clothes.

Thank you for all your hard work (and world wide travel) in making this product. I'm VERY much looking forward to it.

    24. Brett Stark on July 24, 2012

Hate the orange, don't like the timing slip from September, love the pics of the components. You guys are doing great. Just keep at it.

I'll second the vote for a matte finish versus a glossy plastic shine.

I'll also 46th the request for the ETA on shipping...?

    27. Stephen Staver on July 24, 2012

People complaining about not September... ?
Things happen. And being as successful/popular as the Pebble was, there's the requirement of producing FAR many more watches.
I'm impressed that they've been keeping up so much as it is already, and I LOVE the updates for "behind the scenes" for the manufacturing. So at least we get to see these, and then whenever the watches go out, I'll be mega happy.
We've been waiting a few months already, an extra month or two is NOT going to kill anyone.

So thanks for all of your hard work, you guys!
Can imagine all those trips are expensive!

    28. Shawn Connelly on July 24, 2012

I am looking at purchasing a watch for hiking and then I remembered the Pebble I had supported.

I realise that it is too late in the design phase now but it would be nice to see the following in a future iteration of the Pebble:

      - Improved more modern chassis (see using curved flexible display)
      - Smaller body (but same or bigger screen)
      - Colour screen (when colour e-ink is viable in a commercial product)
      - Curved colour screen using flexible display technology such as this:…#!
      - Built in (all functions available on a single chip:
      - compass, altitude, temperature

Do this and I will not only buy one myself but also become a $10K + backer!

Agreed, I'd like to know if you guys know when "as soon as possible" might look like, since it won't be in September. I'm excited to get it, but I'm worried as to when after reading this. Is there a broad window?

Is there a time table. Other than catching the plane on time? Orange? Didn't even see that color.
@Simon Roberts....I agree. Should have gotten the orange for nearly nothing, it is so lovely.I wonder how many people voted, and if we could get that in GRAPH form? All the pertinent info, because I'm still scratching ny head in bewilderment

    34. Peter Brown on July 24, 2012

Glad the choice is orange, I went for black to start with but then got scared that I'd regret it after the vote was done. Now I know I had nothing to worry about :o) It would be nice for pebble to clear up the shipping statement, I'm sure everyone will understand but uncertainty upsets a very enthusiastic crowd.

I agree with you Anthony. I was worried this would happen and I'd pay an extra $10 for nothing. I should have stuck with black. I really wanted gunmetal but I think having so many different grays probably spread the vote too thin.

    36. Shawn Stubbs on July 24, 2012

Estimated shipping dates based on the aggressive timetable are?

I would assume that production can start in September which can yield shipping dates in late October/November?

    37. Alex Wendler on July 24, 2012

Wait, so what's the new time table? Really looking forward to this.

    38. Edmund on July 24, 2012

I'll be using mine mainly for commuting by cycle. I didn't go for orange as I thought a more neutral colour would suit. However, now that I think of it, orange would be great for a commuting watch and matches my reflective vest. Also, this sports watch would be great at the beach with its e-paper display and orange will ensure it is easier to find if dropped in the sand. I think I'll get the orange.

Raul, re: "So are you saying that these watches Will not ship by September like you promised?"

Kickstarter specifically refers to those dates as "Est. delivery". If you haven't figured out that a project expecting to ship 1,000 items that instead needs to ship 100,000 items might slip on its estimated date, I suggest you look around Kickstarter some more.
