Orange Wins! + Manufacturing Prototype Photos

Voter's Choice

Without further ado, I'd like to present the Voter's Choice color....Orange! It won with almost 2000 out of more than 10,000 qualified votes.

I think it looks pretty snazzy! The exact color appearance may vary from this rendering as we work with our plastics supplier. And if you don't like orange, don't worry! As a color backer, you're entitled to pick any of the (now) 4 color options for each one of your Pebbles: Black, White, Red or Orange. We will send out a survey to request your selection later on in the project.

Manufacturing Update

The Pebble team has been bouncing back and forth between Palo Alto and Taipei a lot over the last 6 weeks. The factory that we selected has an R&D facility in Taipei while their main manufacturing and assembly locations are in China. Andrew, Steve and I have all travelled separately to Taipei to oversee the transition between the design and manufacturing stages of the project. In terms of our schedule, we're sticking pretty closely to an aggressive timetable we put together at the end of May (remember our first timetable was created before we launched on Kickstarter, when we were expecting to manufacture just 1,000 Pebbles). While we won't be able to start shipping Pebbles in September, our current schedule has us on track to go from manufacturing zero to 15,000 Pebbles per week as soon as possible.

We're currently in a phase called Engineering Verification. During this phase, the factory produced samples of the entire product. We're currently evaluating each individual component (case, lens, circuit board, charge cable, etc) and we'll tweak the design as necessary. The design needs to be nearly perfect before we move into a phase called 'tooling' during which the factory creates hardened steel tools for injection molding Pebble's plastic components.

Prototype Lens

Remember our tiny printed circuit board (PCB) design from Update #15? Here it is in real life attached to our custom PCB test fixture.

Another key component in our design is a flexible printed circuit (FPC). See that empty space in the middle? That's where the battery fits in.

Right now I am more impressed by your loyalty and respect for the people who buy the watches than I am the product. May I have a diagram of your business operating system? I have just read Drive by Daniel Pink and you sound like the type of organization that operates under a more forward thinking plan than the traditional reward - punishment system. I am very interested.

Thank you for your valuable time ... Sandi Evans

I ordered the black pebble when that was the snazziest version around. Now that orange is an option I'd LOVE to be able to change my ordered black to the orange one. Is it possible to make this happen? (I'll gladly pay the difference)

Great insight into the manufacturing and verification process gents! Its also good to hear you're not making empty promises about shipping dates. I'm really looking forward to getting my ORANGE Pebble!

    4. George M on July 24, 2012

Still, they said September - we paid for September. They didn't have multiples of the original estimate to produce, but they also didn't have multiples of income out of it - which they do now.

I second @Randa Adams - please, please give us something other than dayglo orange - a pleasant brown, gray, blue - yeah, anything but this. What were people thinking?

    7. Alex Dixon on July 24, 2012

I'm happy with Orange, that's what I voted for (will look better with a white strap though, less Halloween!) as for the shipping date change... I'm not ecstatic about it but I also expected it. I'm with everyone else and hope for shipping before December? But we'll have to wait and see.

Also, any news on receiving this on countries with import taxes? Are they going to be shipped as "gifts" to avoid the taxes? (Because someone like me who bought a 10 pack would have to pay an extra $200 import tax if this problem isn't sorted!)

      Thanks for the update though.

    8. Matt Combes on July 24, 2012

Do you want to know why Orange won? Because it was the ONLY ORANGE THERE WAS TO PICK FROM. Unlike many of the other colors that had two or more shades. I bet if you tabulated the votes for both of the grays, or both of the blues, you might find that one of them won out over orange, but because there were multiple shades of those colors to choose from, it split the vote. Likewise, had there been multiple shades of orange to pick from, I doubt you would have seen one of them come out as the winner. It wasn't exactly a fair contest.

So I guess I'll end up having to go with black instead ... ::sigh:: ... I'll just have to try to find a worthwhile strap to accommodate it that gives a good two-tone color that actually goes with most clothing ... unlike orange. Seriously ... orange ... ::smh::

Read my other posts directed at Lars, these are not a start up, they have retail products on the market. The planning by these guys is asking to fail. I ask myself how the hell did they even bring the inPulse onto the market with this kind of business plan.

    10. R. Adams on July 24, 2012

Orange... Gross. Since so much more people pledged than anticipated, is there anyway we could get a 5th color option?? Anything.. Blues, grays, something more versatile than orange.

    11. Geoffrey Miller on July 24, 2012

Seriously. Why are all the wankers that are whining about where it's made, how long it's taking (considering the scaling) coming from? Did they buy into this just so they can be tools? You bought into a company. If you can't do your due diligence, then it's your own fault for involving yourself in a company that doesn't make treehugger shoes in your size.

    15. David Daniel Wouters on July 24, 2012

Come on people, be realistic here, their original goal was for about say a thousand [1000] fully functional prototypes before going to (brick-and-mortar) retail, right? If it stayed at a backing of 100'000 USD and about a 1000pcs, than yeah they would be able to reach a September shipping time frame... But look back at what the top, mid-right of this page says: "68,929 Backers | $10,266,845 pledged of $100,000 goal " That's a whopping 1026% of what they originally hoped for, let me spell it out again: sixty-eight-thousand, nine-hundred-and-twenty-nine backers at ten-million, two-hundred-and-sixty-six-thousand, eight-hundred-and-forty-five million US dollars! which means they have to produce upwards of 50.000+ individual Pebbles to sufficiently supply all of the Kickstarter backers such as ourselfs. You gotta give them time to produce this BRAND-SPANKING-NEW product! And let's be honest, they weren't expecting this big a success, so let's give them a break okay?

      disappointing but not very surprising.

      Rather white than orange

    25. Lars Dahl on July 24, 2012

@Simon Not on any high stool but you seem to think that you backed a project by Walmart! This is a project, not manufacturing P&P experts. I have no illusions, you seem to have lots of them if you back a project at kickstarter and demand things like alot of people do here....

Disappointed about the delivery date but as it is a unique project it's understandable however as a backer who has paid money for this project to be funded, it would be nice to hear more on the projected delivery date. Feel a bit left in the dark.

Get off your IKEA high stool, if you have no concept of manufacturing P&P then dont attempt to preach, there are people here that put up 10k and at the rate this project is going (end July and no final tooling with a predicted september ship) i have my doubts.

    34. Martin Donnelly on July 24, 2012

Orange won over the grey colours??? Seriously? :(

    35. Brian Holme on July 24, 2012

i still would like some sortive grey as another color option. please please please have a vote for what grey people want as a 5th color option

    36. Lars Dahl on July 24, 2012

And one more thing.. There is no promise anywhere in the project info about september.. just estimated delivery...

    37. Ryan on July 24, 2012

      Orange??? Booooooooooo

    38. Geoffrey Miller on July 24, 2012

Orange. Really. The worst color of the spectrum. That's why we can't have nice things. They left this up to group consensus and that never works out. "It's really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times, people don't know what they want until you show it to them." - Steve Jobs

    39. Kristoffer Wessel on July 24, 2012

      @lars dahl

firstoff, we are backers AND customers, regarding this project. secondly, i do not necessarily have a problem with orange - black it shall be - but nontheless i am somewhat surprised and a little bit shocked that people have so much sympathy toward that color. just my two cents, anyways.

    45. Jason Moriarty on July 24, 2012

Definitely disappointed by the news that the Pebble has been delayed. Of course I understand the reason and don't hold a grudge, but it's a disappointment nonetheless. As the original ship date gets closer, please be sure to update us on changes. Hearing nothing is much worse than hearing bad news.

    46. Micah on July 24, 2012

Delay on shipment? Nice! More time for us developers to make apps ready for launch-day. :)

    47. Lars Dahl on July 24, 2012

Come on you haters.... This is a project you backed, not a company! There was no confusion on what you backed when you backed the color option! You all put money towards a project and will get a watch (or more) for it. You can't really come with demands now, when the funding is over and it is in production!

So get over yourself, you are not customers, you are backers of a project and in the end you might end up with nothing, that is the risk you took!

Everyone else... Hell yeah for orange! Want white strap with mine but hey can buy that for under 5 dollars anywhere! Love this project and love everything you do to make this watch happen Pebble!! Keep up the good work!

    48. oneblessedguy on July 24, 2012

+1 for white band instead of black. Love the orange with the white.

    49. Carlos on July 24, 2012

      Fine, keep going guys.

Is funny, I pledged for some kickstarter projects and NONE of them were shipped onto the Estimated Delivery month. When I pledge I assume that this can happen, so it's just a thing that can be really improved for everyone who post a project.
