Orange Wins! + Manufacturing Prototype Photos

Voter's Choice

Without further ado, I'd like to present the Voter's Choice color....Orange! It won with almost 2000 out of more than 10,000 qualified votes.

I think it looks pretty snazzy! The exact color appearance may vary from this rendering as we work with our plastics supplier. And if you don't like orange, don't worry! As a color backer, you're entitled to pick any of the (now) 4 color options for each one of your Pebbles: Black, White, Red or Orange. We will send out a survey to request your selection later on in the project.

Manufacturing Update

The Pebble team has been bouncing back and forth between Palo Alto and Taipei a lot over the last 6 weeks. The factory that we selected has an R&D facility in Taipei while their main manufacturing and assembly locations are in China. Andrew, Steve and I have all travelled separately to Taipei to oversee the transition between the design and manufacturing stages of the project. In terms of our schedule, we're sticking pretty closely to an aggressive timetable we put together at the end of May (remember our first timetable was created before we launched on Kickstarter, when we were expecting to manufacture just 1,000 Pebbles). While we won't be able to start shipping Pebbles in September, our current schedule has us on track to go from manufacturing zero to 15,000 Pebbles per week as soon as possible.

Eric checking the power consumption of Pebble's backlight module

We're currently in a phase called Engineering Verification. During this phase, the factory produced samples of the entire product. We're currently evaluating each individual component (case, lens, circuit board, charge cable, etc) and we'll tweak the design as necessary. The design needs to be nearly perfect before we move into a phase called 'tooling' during which the factory creates hardened steel tools for injection molding Pebble's plastic components.

Prototype Lens

Remember our tiny printed circuit board (PCB) design from Update #15? Here it is in real life attached to our custom PCB test fixture.

Another key component in our design is a flexible printed circuit (FPC). See that empty space in the middle? That's where the battery fits in.

I still want to know the ATM pressure rating, want a new dive watch.

Must say that from a professional perspective, hiding the delay in ship date is disappointing. I would personally appreciate a larger headline for it instead of hiding it somewhere in the manufacturing text (as a backer and a user). To begin with KickStarter is somewhat of a bet, and as the largest funded project in it, you somehow have the honor (and responsibility) to show the community how a kickstarter project SHOULD act. Please consider in future updates.

I like the orange, I may end up getting a black and white fabric strap (so 2 separate ones.) Makes for a fun watch and a great look.

    4. Fairmount Bag Co. on July 25, 2012

I actually bet there are a few people who would send their black Pebble and a $20 to get an orange one. People should try and swap!

Me? I like black. This orange, although I like the color, is a bit gaudy - so I would have chosen black anyway.

Matte finish option would be so nice, especially for people in a business setting

    6. Craig Thornton on July 25, 2012

      Nicely said Edward.

It's not hard to imagine a schedule based on 1000 watches isn't possible to achieve when producing 85000 watches. The most important thing, for the company and for the backers, is a quality product.

To that end, I take my hat off to the Pebble team. They appear to be doing all the right things to ensure the final product is a great one.

    7. Edward Williams on July 25, 2012

For once I would love to stumble across a community that isn't so volatile. I almost believed I was on YouTube for a second here. People really need to calm down. Is asking politely for a different color a thing of the past? And why are they liars? If they shipping date has to be pushed back, it has to be pushed back--unless you want an incomplete product.

      Chill out.

    8. Matt on July 25, 2012

@Jeff A - I see your point about the shades. I'm not sure that it was intentional. I did find the various grey options a bit odd. I didn't vote for it but I do support the orange,

With regard to your statement on professionals: Just don't get an orange one. There are 3 others to choose from. May I recommend the black?

    9. Jeff A on July 25, 2012

@sg- It's not that we don't understand it's a vote... it's that the vote was essentially rigged. There was one orange option and several shades of blue/green/gray to choose from. The point is, if you were to add all the votes together for those colors they would far exceed the 2k that voted orange. Thus, the majority of voters are dissatisfied with the outcome. Also, many of us are professionals who would like to wear this watch on a daily basis and orange is not going to fly.

    10. Peng-Han Su on July 25, 2012

Yay! I'm your backer and I'm living in Taipei ~ It would be AWSOME if I'm lucky enough to see you guys on the street HAHAHAHA

    11. Doug Collins
      on July 25, 2012

Apparently a little over 20% of us choose Orange, but not me. Maybe they can take the top three vote getters and have us vote again.
And I'd like to echo the request for matte vs glossy bezels.

    12. SD
      on July 25, 2012

Who the hell chose ORANGE? That's AWFUL. I don't want it to be Halloween all the time.

    13. Mike Hedman on July 25, 2012

Quality, quality, quality. Those are my three votes for delivery date.

    14. Brian A on July 25, 2012

I pledged for black, and I'm a bit jealous now of you guys with your orange option. You should enjoy it for what it is: awesome. Also, I agree with what was said above, about wanting a flat/matte bezel instead of one so shiny. But I wonder if that's even a possibility at this late stage of the game...

    15. Elliot Hesp on July 25, 2012

I think if they gave us an exact date of when it will be shipping, rather than "it wont be here in September" people would be more happy... (as long as it is in 2012).

    16. Jonathan Yao
      on July 25, 2012

Oh I guess Andy was also complaining about the delay.

Andy, the problem with scaling the production is that it could be the factory that had the problem with scaling and not the Pebble. Just building a 1,000 of a object is a whole lot different than building 85,000 of them. There is also the problem of continuing to build the watches after the 85,000 are built, since the project is so popular, Pebble will need to keep a high rate of production for the future.

You might be also forgetting the fact that they limited the kickstarter to 85,000 in the first place to limit the delay. If they did not do that, the watch would have been an even longer delay.

I like the orange colour :)
And about the delivery date: they will ship pebble when it's done. Why bother with an est. delivery date? Eric is posting updates, you can see progress in the project. This is (in my opinion) the most important part in a kickstarter project, keep the bakers informed about the current status and what the next steps are.

    18. Jonathan Yao
      on July 25, 2012

Mark. except for your comment, no one is complaining about the delay. Sure, there is disappointment and some questions about the delay, but everyone is more focus on the color winner than anything else.

    19. Baltazar de la Torre on July 25, 2012

i believe that everyone knows that projects like this is very difficult to meet deadlines. the initial goal was 1000 (i think) watches, but it have grown ten fold.
so a little patience (im not suggesting 10 times patience)
      sorry about my broken english!!!

    20. CaffeineJunkie on July 25, 2012

I dont believe you can cancel your support.
      This is Kickstarter, not Amazon.

You were backing a project that is a work in progress. If you did not understand this then you really should have read up on this a bit more carefully.

From the Kickstarter FAQ to project creators: "You’ll never give up ownership or pay back any funds raised on Kickstarter. Ever."

So...since you have absolutely no idea when you'll deliver, how do I cancel my support? Seems like a completely botched project to me.

Yes, I'm serious about canceling. How do I do it?

And FYI: If this many people are pissed off at both the delay and how you "announced" it, you didn't handle it properly.

    23. Jamie Rytlewski on July 25, 2012

Well if you are missing the Sept. delivery date for most people, what about the Hacker special, you only had 100 of those.

    24. Fuzzball on July 25, 2012

I look forward to a more solid ship date. I was really hoping to retire my current, beaten watch in September, but I kind of figured the September ship timetable was a bit ambitious. I'd rather it take longer and be right than meet the ship date and be a poor product.

If you're going to get watches in batches, I suggest shipping them out as soon as you get them in. I suggest the order in which they are sent out is the order when that person backed it. Other options would be to ship based off of backing amount, alphabetical order, reverse alphabetical order, or random. Perhaps a poll/vote would help.

I don't really care too much about the delay as long as it's going to be great in the end. Though I still have doubts in the voting process chosen and its result, I don't mind getting white or black instead...

But please consider MATTE FINISH for at least one of the neutal colors.

    27. Donald Hansen Jr. on July 25, 2012

Look at it this way... the more people who DON'T pick orange, the more limited edition the orange Pebbles will be. I had a pony in the race for an Envious green. It didn't win, but I'm still getting orange to show my support for the voter's choice concept and process. Kudos to Pebble for going out of their way to give us a voice. Many Kickstarters would not give their backers this kind of leverage in the final product.

    29. CaffeineJunkie on July 25, 2012

Oh, and more than 10,000 votes (though not much more I'd guess), so only half the people eligable voted.

    30. CaffeineJunkie on July 25, 2012

It doesnt matter how much money they've raised. Throwing more money at a problem wont get them made any quicker.

Oh, and you dont like orange? Pick another color. There are three others. If black, white, or red dont appeal to you, then you shouldnt have backed this on the slim hope the voters color suited you.

    31. VipX1 on July 25, 2012

Wow! The FPC and the PBC, all the components squashed in there. How cool to be working on something, that cool, at that level. I really envy you guys. I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on the watch.. :)

    36. Rick Tan on July 25, 2012

Sorry guys. I am one of the 2000. Wanted to use this as a fun watch and for sports. Disappointed with the delay in production. Do hope they have decided to delay so as not to compromise on quality. Oh, please do not have a next version in less than 1 yr from the day I unbox it. Unless I can upgrade with discount and available in blue.

My only hope is that you guys make a wonderful quality product.

Oh, seems like almost impossible for me to replace the battery by myself. Hope I am wrong.

I am fascinated by how many people do not seem to understand the meaning of a vote, that is that what you want is not necessarily what the majority wants.
If you decided to pledge for the color option it was clear from the beginning that you would be pick one of 3 existing choices or another color which may be not to your liking.
If you can't live with a result you will not like then don't go in that direction in the first place.

    40. Olaf van Cronenburg on July 25, 2012

Jus wondering if the pebble team thought about making pebble the entry device for token authentication as , Vasco authentication now is pre installed on most CHIPS, and Facebook will start using it as wel, could not pebble serve as the token autheticator for all login issues. In conjunction with your Phone or not it would be an extra and Free option.

    42. Ken Hallock on July 25, 2012

Jesus, people are whining because other people don't share their tastes in colors? People will complain about anything, won't they. Fucking Internet.

That said, I /would/ appreciate at least some kind of rough timeframe for receiving the watch - fourth quarter? Earlly 2013? Anything at all would be great.
