More backers...more component orders!

A few backers were wondering how we'll be communicating with you throughout the manufacturing and shipping process. All official updates will be posted on this Update page (and automatically emailed to you) as manufacturing continues. We can't share everything for various reasons (we need to respect non-disclosure agreements that we've signed and protect our intellectual property) but here's a quick sample!

I placed an order for a few more long lead-time components today. If you can believe it, this purchase order (PO) is for just 2 of the electronic components inside Pebble! This will be the first cheque I've signed with this many zeros and commas.

Hope you have an awesome weekend and for our far east backers, continue having an awesome weekend!

That is a lot of commas.. congrats!

The company already has the equipment from manufacturing the InPulse, so it is likely that production will continue in the same fashion. However that does not mean it is being done in a garage by five people, or that they are not capable of working on more than one watch at a time...

Could the questions get anymore idiotic than what I have seen here. Clearly people have never heard of contract manufacturing -- that's how computers are assembled and this is how the pebble will be assembled. Apple doesn't assemble its Ipad so why should pebble.

This is truly amazing that people who live in the modern world still think that 5 guys will sit in their garage and hand assemble each watch, then print (by hand I presume) the labels and pack each watch... stupid I tell you (have none of these people heard of Foxconn? I mean really!

@Grant.. Huh? These guys are designers, engineers and coders, they aren't going to be the ones sitting there in Eric's garage assembling these things by themselves (at least I hope not!)

Omkar: I have the same concerns. If it takes 5 minutes to assemble a pebble, with 10 people working full time it would take 18 weeks to assemble the quantity that are currently expected. I'm worried I won't see mine until 2013.
Of course, there's also the 'economies of scale' thing to consider. Mass production is cheaper. If they can get quality production at that scale, this could be a really good thing. Would bring down the per-unit cost and allow them to put some more development money into the watch.

How are you going to support a production plan for such a large quantity as your original plan didnt include larger volumes? Are you still going to be able to meet the Sept deadline?

I love the fact that we use pebble to run, swim, cycle. It would be great if we can use a Heart rate monitor with pebble too.

Is there going to be a way to tell how much battery life is available so your watch won't just blank out on you?

Is there a heart rate monitor for the poor guy signing the checks? I would've passed out!

Heart rate monitor connection comes with Runkeeper. I.e. connect the heart rate strap with runkeeper on the smartphone and hopefully the information will be displayed on Pebble.

Heart rate monitor connection would be great. Not sure how this would be possible, but there are many third-party hardware options, all it needs is the correct frequency and the software to interpret it.

      What are the chances?

Will there be a built in heart rate monitor for those of us who use a gym please????

I don't know what the big deal with Bluetooth 4 is. It just has better battery, with BT 2.1 they have figured out a way to make the battery last for a week, that's fine by me. I'd rather have 2.1 by september than have to wait for months for a BT 4 redesign.

    19. Voir Dire on

Glad to see a meaningful update. Keep up the good work guys!

BTW, for those who keep asking for the latest Bluetooth, hardware changes are most likely not going to happen so I suggest sitting tight and waiting for Pebble 2.0. It'll prob be a WHOLE lot better. :)

I hope this wasn't for Bluetooth 2.1 parts...

      Q. Is it waterproof? A. Pebble is now water resistant, at least enough to go swimming, run in the rain etc. You can fully submerge Pebble in water. We're working on getting the actual certification level settled (3ATM, 5ATM, etc). This is in response to your suggestions!

If you guys need any help sourcing components let me know. Long lead time, obsolete and hard to find components are my specialty. I've been in the semiconductor industry since 1999. Cost savings are also a niche of mine. Good luck and I look forward to my Pebble!!

@Gabriella & Gregor... I am not trying to discourage you from creating a product. I think it's great to want to create something new. But when you paste the exact same comment in 4 different Pebble updates within minutes of each other.. it's tacky and lame. It is evident to me that you are trying to advertise your project, and the last thing I want to do is read your "advertisement" in the Pebble updates. I wish you success with your project, but please, chill with the advertisement.

During my working life, I have had a bookkeeping practice in Houston, worked for SBA advising small businesses and have owned a small business since 1994. This site is a great idea for worthwhile projects. I too have pledged a small amount and am very proud to be one of the investors. But my son has basically taken over the business leaving me too much time to watch the soaps. I hope to get more involved as an investor, but doing due diligence, with more worthwhile projects like this one. These young folks are to be commended for putting their guts into this project. I sincerely hope they give preference to veterans (sorry but I am a disabled vet) in hiring. Sometime soon, I hope the site owners give some kind of education to investors as to how to do due diligence both on their site and using external resources. If they do, I hope they notify everyone. God Bless.

Its a Purchase Order. That normally means its a promise to pay when an invoice is shipped. This isn't saying hes laying out 1Million. Its the first step before they are billed via Invoice for the 1Million.

It easy to get money from a bank or person when you have over 50000 backers with all you credit card details given. Are you risking your (credibility) rating over a few hunderd dollars. and do not forget! This is kickstarter ones it hits the shelf they could look at swatch watch succes. For all we know it could be fundened upfront by Mr. Buffet himself. Good luck boys.
