In true holiday miracle fashion, we managed to surpass our initial goal in about 24 hours. This is money that is all going to the composers to help us pay their commission fees, and now we're hoping you can help us as we plan the actual performance of these pieces.
Stretch goal #1: With $3500 we will be able to pay for space rental (which is not cheap in New York City), as well as produce a high quality video recording of the premiere of these pieces, which will be shared on the internet for all to enjoy.
We are Echo Chamber
We're Echo Chamber, a new sextet dedicated to commissioning and performing contemporary music. Through this Kickstarter campaign, we hope to raise funds to aid in commissioning four young composers based in New York whose music we really love.
Echo Chamber is comprised of clarinet, piano, percussion, violin, cello, and bass—a pretty strange combination of instruments. Because of this unique instrumentation, which lacks any extant repertoire, the sole purpose of the group is to bring new music written especially for us into the world. Towards that goal, we're commissioning four of our friends: Brooks Frederickson, Matt Frey, Molly Joyce, and Pascal Le Boeuf. We'll be presenting the world premieres of these four works on our last concert of the season, in June 2016 (location TBD). This isn't a one-time deal, though—we want these new pieces to have legs. We'll keep performing the music that you help create for years to come.
We need your help to bring these new works to fruition! We're hoping to raise $2,000 through this campaign to help augment our Commissioning Fund, so we can pay each of these four fantastic composers a fair rate for their work. All of the money we raise will go directly to the composers and their work. If we exceed our goal, the additional funds will help cover other costs associated with the concert, including space rental and making a great audio-video recording.
What's in it for me?
We want you to share in the attendant excitement that comes with commissioning new works! In exchange for backing our project, we've got some super cool rewards for you, including:
- concert tickets;
- a mixtape featuring the music of all four composers, as well as our co-founder, Kyle Tieman-Strauss;
- a piece of music written on the back of a postcard;
- a signed first page of each score;
- the knowledge that you're helping create four new pieces of music!
We hope you'll join us!
Risks and challenges
We're asking a lot from our supporters as well as ourselves. Learning four brand new pieces is major commitment of time; not only are we learning notes and rhythms, but we're also helping the composer work out the kinks in their new piece as we go. Composers might need extra time to finish writing, or might have to make extensive edits before turning in a final score. As a group, we might have less time to rehearse a new piece before its premiere.
All of these are potential pitfalls. That said, we're very lucky to be collaborating with four highly-qualified (and talented!) composers to write new pieces for us. We're 200% confident in their skill and experience, and in partnership with our expertise as an ensemble—and your help—we'll be able to create fresh and exciting art! We also have a track record for producing polished and well-attended concerts. Learn more about us at http://echochamber.nyc.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
