I've been a musician my entire life, and I've never been more excited about an album than I am about this one! I co-wrote these tunes with my wife Genevieve, and there's something really special about how they turned out. This music has all my favorite qualities. An ambient dream-folk sound with beautiful heartfelt lyrics. I can't wait to get in the studio and capture these songs for you!
While thinking about how to make this album and where to record it, a beautiful plan came to mind one night.
I knew what I wanted for the vibe of the record, but who could I bring into the studio to help me create it? It hit me all at once - POLECAT! (or members of). They're a stellar band that I've loved for years. They just recorded a great album at a mutual friend's studio in Bellingham. I reached out to ask if they'd be interested in working with me on this record, and the idea was met with a lot of enthusiasm. I booked a one-day session at Bell Creek Studio to do a test run and we tracked two songs in one day (which is good!).
Bell Creek Studio is owned and operated by Michael Iris. It's a beautiful custom-built studio tucked into the foothills near Mt. Baker. These songs were meant to be recorded here!
Dream folk fits the vibe of this record really well. It's not straight folk, or singer song-writer, it's more dreamy and etherial. You'll hear violin, cello, acoustic guitars, electric guitars, Rhodes piano and much more.
I plan to start recording in mid-January. The funds you contribute will help cover the costs of 12 days in the studio, as well as the engineer, musicians, mixing and mastering, graphic design, album packaging and duplication. My goal is to have the songs recorded and mixed by the end of January. Then I will work through February and March putting the finishing touches on the artwork and release plans. The album will be ready to release in June - hopefully on the solstice!
Risks and challenges
Making a record is a big commitment. I've made several and know what to expect. They're expensive, take time and require good planning and execution. Funding is always the biggest challenge. These days, listening to music for free (or really cheap) is the norm. Few people think about what it actually costs to make a record, not to mention all the time in planning each detail of the project. I'll be working with some amazing musicians on this project. We'll meeting for several pre-production sessions to prepare before going into the studio to record. I've chosen a team and location that has a strong track record for being committed to their projects. I have total faith in my friends, family and fans who have supported my work over the years. THANK YOU ALL 1,000 times over for making it possible to make music for you. We will do you proud with this one!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
