My parents read to me nightly when I was a boy, and many of my childhood books remain great favorites even now, decades later. There's something particularly remarkable about creative projects that never feel dated or stale. These are the books, films, sketches, and songs that defy all odds and live forever. These are the projects that exhibit soul.
As such, Brian and I have worked hard to achieve that classic, timeless quality in Lucy and the Anvil, though our sense of classic is certainly tempered with very modern sensibilities. We're firm believers in things like structure and satisfying story arcs, and our collective influences range from Walt Disney and Henry Selick to Sergio Leone and Jean-Pierre Jeunet. We also believe that the ideal bedtime story offers equal pleasure to both parent and child.
Below are shown our primary benefactor rewards, all of which will be produced in either the U.S. or U.K. The book itself will be printed just a short drive from Chicago. The letterpress bookplate and print will be produced by Blush Publishing in Wales, and our magnificent resin anvil will be made by Bigshot Toyworks in North Carolina, certainly the gold standard in American toy design. Please note that final anvil color may vary slightly, but we’re shooting for a pleasantly weathered iron.
Lucy and the Anvil is my second collaboration with Brian. Should it meet with some success, we'll likely move directly to our third. And that project, too, we very much hope will exhibit some semblance of soul.
Risks and challenges
Brian and I have worked hard to address those hurdles we can actually predict, primarily by enlisting vendors of sterling reputation. Our printer comes highly recommended, and Brian has worked with both Blush and Bigshot before. These are reliable, honest people who take great pride in their work, just as we do.
That said, everything beyond production boils down purely to Brian and me, and there is a sizable ocean between us after all. No doubt unforeseen hurdles will arise. They always do.
