"Plie Ball! Baseball and Dance in America" is an expansion of a lengthy paper that was presented in June 2009 at the 21st Annual Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture, which took place at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. The book is contracted by McFarland & Co., the great publisher of books about baseball and dance. It will be a book that covers just about every point of connection between these two magnificent disciplines (and, believe me, there are many!).
I will need to do extensive research over the next 8-10 months, primarily in New York City (at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts) and Cooperstown (at the Baseball Hall of Fame Library). Simultaneously, I will be writing. Additionally, I will be seeking photographs and images for the book and attempting to obtain permissions for those photos and images that I would like to use. I will also be interviewing dancers, choreographers, baseball players, scholars, teachers, fans, physical therapists, and physicians, and will be working on securing one dancer and one player to contribute introductory pieces for the book.
I am seeking funding for three primary elements of the project: 1) for research (travel and lodging); 2) for fees that will be charged for the use of photographs and other images/illustrations (such as copyright fees); and 3) for a small honorarium that can be offered to those two individuals (one dancer and one player) who may be interested in writing the introductory pieces for the book. McFarland, unfortunately, does not offer advances and does not provide funding for photos/illustrations or guest introduction writers, which is why it is necessary for me to seek funding elsewhere, since the up-front costs are nearly impossible for me to handle on my own at present. I hope so much that you can help! I promise that you will be rewarded and recognized for your assistance and will certainly earn my everlasting gratitude!
This project, by the way, will be based in Seattle and New York City. I wish to thank the Seattle Mariners and another Major League Baseball team that must remain anonymous for donating wonderful reward items for my backers!
Thank you so much!
Also, please note that the dancer in the project photo is Chris Black. The photo is from Chris's fabulous baseball-infused dance piece, "Pastime." The photographer is Andy Mogg.
