SOOZA PALOOZA, a Comic Concert

About four or five years ago I was listening to some John Philip Sousa Marches on my iPod as i did my morning walk, and suddenly lyrics began coming to me, seemingly out of nowhere. It started innocently enough with one march, then two, then three and I had a trilogy. I thought I was done, but no, these comic, silly, and sometimes racy words kept coming to me one by one, until I had ten fully written lyrics, plus one partially finished song I could use as a "postlude.". At first I thought this whole project was just a waste of time, something to relieve boredom as I walked, but then I started writing these words down, and as I showed them to my peers it became clear that these songs needed to be performed and enjoyed by a wider audience.

So, here I am with a concert to do, and no funds with which to do it;  hence, this Kickstarter project. I am convinced that this will be a funny and rewarding experience for both the audience and performers, and my plan is for it be turned into a CD and a DVD, not for sale, but as rewards for participants, and you as investors, and which should be available about a month or so after the performance. Certain levels of investment will be rewarded with these recordings, the number and kind of which will depend on the investment level, of course.

So, I hope to fund this show of marches with irreverent lyrics with your help, and here is the rest of my plan: I have written, and will write, arrange, rehearse and conduct a performance of all my Marches. It is a concert with a theme, rather than a narrative. The paid performers ($11,500.00 worth) will be college students from the University of North Texas. These are Top-Notch singers and players; some of the best in the country. Rehearsal space will cost about $800.00, The performance will be at the Voertman Hall (about $2800.00 rental all things included), a 380 seat venue on the UNT campus. Admission will be free to university students. The budget must also include insurance, audio, video, lighting, stage crew, custodial, printing, postage, security, costumes, licensing, catering, CD's, DVD's and more, and we have figured the budget for this project will be about $29,000.00, to cover all the items, so this is my goal.

There you have it. An evening of irreverent musical humor. Eight marching songs and at least three encores will be performed, (along with my wry commentary.) My vision is to do a live concert that will turn into a really cool CD and DVD, and I need your help for this project. I just have 30 days to raise the money, so that is what am asking for. As with all Kickstarter projects, this is “all or nothing.” I must get the 29 "grand" in 30 "great" days, or I get zero, and all my work will have been for nothing, which is sad. Thank you in advance for your help. And who knows? A famous producer might see the show and want to take it on National Tour!

Risks and challenges

I have tried to eliminate from the get-go any risks involved, getting permissions to use copyrighted materials, of which there are not many, as I am using almost all public domain songs, and getting permission to use the UNT venue, for which I have already made a bid, and firming up a performance date. These are the only challenges I can foresee, so once I have hired all the musicians, etc. it should be clear sailing.
