:: a triple-portmanteau naming a mythical beast – the gnarly-narwhal-wallaby hybrid
:: a contemporary-classical chamber ensemble of clarinet, trombone, cello, and piano
:: the only known, currently active ensemble of this particular instrumentation in the Americas
There is a surprisingly large amount of preëxisting music from the late-1960s to the early-2000s composed for this fascinating combination of instruments: about 50 pieces! gnarwhallaby is not only adding to this body of repertoire through composer commissions and compositions by its own members, but they have been actively reviving and performing a lot of this music since their formation in 2011.
Below are some sample recordings from a concert gnarwhallaby performed on the Dog Star Orchestra summer concert series in August 2013. gnarwhallaby's album will be the first commercial release of these and other works (if you can't see the audio player widgets for some reason, you can listen on the website audio page here: http://www.gnarwhallaby.com/audio.html)
- Włodzimierz Kotoński :: pour quatre (1968)
- Zygmunt Krauze :: Polychromie (1968)
- Henryk Górecki :: Muzyczka IV (1970)
gnarwhallaby's first ensemble album project, called Exhibit A, will be a full-length CD and digital album featuring some of the original, formative repertoire written for this particular instrumentation (commissioned by the now-defunct quartets Musical Workshop and Quartett Avance). The album will be comprised of original works (not arrangements) by such well-known contemporary composers as Henryk Górecki, Morton Feldman, and Edison Denisov; some lesser-known composers Włodzimierz Kotoński, Steffen Schleiermacher, and Zygmunt Krauze; as well as a couple composers whom the ensemble knows personally: Marc Sabat and LA's own Nicholas Deyoe.
"We are really excited about recording this music, most of which has never been recorded or released in any format! But we need your help. Recording a proper album takes a substantial sum of money, of course. gnarwhallaby is very lucky to have the use of Scott Fraser’s state-of-the-art studio as well the ears, artistry, and experience of amazing audio engineer Nick Tipp, so you can be sure that the recording quality will be second-to-none. By helping fund this project, you are pre-ordering your own copy of this album of unique music for a unique combination of instruments." ~ gnarwhallaby

Risks and challenges
We have scheduled our recording dates for October 22nd and 23rd. All parties to be involved are available and ready!
Obviously, with all the recording, editing, mixing, mastering, art direction and design, printing, producing, etc that must occur for an album like this to be produced, all those moving parts could potentially go awry. But the totality of this funding goal will go towards studio rental, engineering fees, and album printing. If we're funded, there's no stopping us!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
