The distant future. Communicative technology has become illegal due to public and governmental mistrust. Our story surrounds Lola, early-twenties, and an entry-level receptionist at a sleekly modern Graphic Design House. She spends her days in front of a hulking switchboard, connecting call after monotonous call. She is ambitious, yet unsatisfied. A lonely London dweller stuck in a state of impermanence. She appears to loose sight of the long-term over the course of the narrative, knowing what she is doing will benefit her, but is still discontent. Through the act of connecting his calls she begins a purely platonic friendship with an older man who helps her with this deep feeling she has of indifference, of not belonging. The story culminates when Lola finally accepts her co-worker’s invitation for after work drinks – she spots someone who she believes could be the man she’s talking to on the phone, deciding to follow him.
The main inspiration for the story came from when Alice, our director and co-writer, was commuting into London for a receptionist job. Bored of the long trains she began to imagine a world in which technology was no longer used to communicate and the interesting realities of that world.
The funds raised will help us make this film into a reality, your support will be used in various ways from travelling to location, to funding our art department.
With an entirely futuristic world to create we expect that much of the money used will go towards this. We have to create an entirely modernised version of the switchboard, as well as create costume for every single character on scene, including background artists.
Securing actors is also something that many low budget films struggle with, due to only being able to offer low or no pay. With your money we can afford to offer our cast a small payment for their hard work and time.
We also plan to put some of our budget aside for entry into film festivals. With many of the crew already having had success previously at events such as Aesthetica, Phoenix Comic-Con and Birmingham Custard Factory we believe that this film could add to our successes.
Risks and challenges
Making a film this ambitious on a low budget is a challenge. There's potential that despite all our careful planning things will not turn out the way they are expected to.
However with the talent and dedication that the crew has shown so far, I am confident that we can overcome any obstacles we may face.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
