When people hear the music of Johann Sebastian Bach they are permanently changed – inspired, moved, often shocked by the power of the music to absorb and usher the listener into a world of beauty and intelligence. That's why in 2010 I started offering frequent free performances of Bach's Cello Suites in the subways of New York City to show people the splendor of an art form which sadly many never get the chance to hear live and up close.
In 2011 I started inviting other musicians to join the fun on Bach's birthday, March 21, and over the years the numbers grew...
On Bach's 330th birthday – March 21, 2015 – thousands of musicians in 130 cities in 40 countries performed on Bach in the Subways Day. More Bach was played and heard than ever before in human history – in subways, cafes, street corners, schools, churches, museums, airports, and more. The world was brightened and bettered by this colossal, collective act of inspiration and generosity.
Our goal with this Kickstarter campaign has three parts:
1) We've already spent many thousands of dollars on Bach in the Subways: designing, building, and maintaining a website that can handle Bach in the Subways Day 2015; global outreach; printing tens of thousands of Bach in the Subways Day cards and shipping them around the world; publicity & social media efforts. We'd like to cover our costs.
2) Organizers in other cities have accrued thousands of dollars of costs of their own which we'd like to help with. Although we organized fundraising concerts in L.A. and Seattle last February which covered those cities' Bach in the Subways Day expenses, others are still in the red. We'd like to be able to help.
3) We've done the preliminary organizational registration necessary to set Bach in the Subways up in a sustainable way such that we can continue our efforts over the coming years. But we've got more to do to and fees for this type of registration run in the thousands of dollars.
Help us bring Bach to the future with more inspiring and world-bettering Bach in the Subways Days and other Bach in the Subways events.
