About this project
Thanks so much for helping us reach our goal! We would love for our project to continue past this summer; a few galleries may be interested in hosting the Music Box. So, we've decided to add in a few stretch goals to make this happen:
If we reach $4,500, we may be able to transport our Music Box to a gallery on Long Island, New York.
If we reach $6,000 we may be able to transport our Music Box to a gallery in Miami, Florida.
If you would like to be a part of helping this project live on, increase your pledges, or simply spread the word about our project. We would love for this project to reach as many people as possible, and with your help, the Music Box can live on. Thank you for your support!
Walking around New York City today, most people are wearing earbuds. They have thousands of digital songs in their pockets. With our installation on Governors Island, we want to create a space where people can play together in the creation of musical sound. We aspire to bring them back to a time when recorded music was physical, by putting a single song directly into their hands.
Our music box is an enlargement from the classic toy, with the keyboards and handles doubled. This twin design will encourage dual play (with one handle lower for children). Our collaborator, Alex Nelson, wrote an original song, translating the melody onto one barrel and the harmony onto another. It will allow two people to harmonize together, creating infinite arrangements of rhythm based on the speed they turn the handles.
We want a child, who may have grown up knowing only digital music, to make a song out of steel. Maybe we’ll even bring joy to perfect strangers, coming together to perform two integral parts of the same song.
We need your support to help us build a giant Music Box on Governors Island in New York City as part of the Figment Sculpture Garden. The materials and the large scale of this project are expensive. Any amount you can give helps to fund the creation of an enormous, interactive Music Box for the public to play with. Come check it on opening weekend, June 8-9, or any weekend this summer!
Risks and challenges
Building a sculpture of this scale comes with obstacles from the beginning. However, we are all experienced sculptors, and we are continually learning throughout our building process. The more we build, the more we learn, and so we are adapting our plan as we go.
Because our project is already slated to open on Figment Weekend (June 8),
we're moving forward with construction every day! Your funding will afford us the materials needed to make this happen.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
