This project is about creating our book Growing Simple, to share the story of Old World Garden Farms, and how to live a more simple and fulfilling life through gardening, cooking, canning and a DIY lifestyle.

Our Barn Patio - Built for free from reclaimed brick
Our Barn Patio - Built for free from reclaimed brick

Each and every day, more and more people from every walk of life want to simplify and de-clutter their lives, perhaps grow their first garden, preserve their own food, or raise a few chickens for their own eggs. They want to eat healthier, cut out preservatives - and learn to be responsible for their own food and life choices.

The problem - they don't know where to begin!

And that is exactly what our book is about - where to begin! Growing SImple not only covers our unique story of creating our little "farm" - but serves to teach, inspire and share the tips, hints and tricks that we learned along the way. From gardening, cooking, canning and preserving much of our own food - to using recycled materials like pallets and reclaimed barn wood to rebuild and create everything needed along the way, all the while using a zero-debt philosophy.

There is something very special about building things on your own – becoming responsible for the food on your table – and even more importantly – knowing where it came from.

You see, we don't sell anything from our "farm". We grow our garden crops, and raise our chickens and honey bees each year simply because we love to eat and grow fresh food - and we have fun every step of the way!

We developed our website (www.oldworldgardenfarms.com) to share all of our stories, garden tips, recipes, hints, tricks and DIY projects at the farm. As others began to follow along (it's crazy - but almost 60,000 now!) and incorporate some of our simple growing techniques and strategies - they began to ask us to share more - and the Growing Simple book will share it all! And in the same simple and fun way that we have tried to incorporate the building of our farm, website and life.

So that leads to this Kickstart pledge drive.  With this funding, we will create and self-publish a beautiful, full-color, approximately 200 page hard-bound book, with a first-run printing of 500 copies to use in our book tour. It will also pay for the set up of on-demand printing for all additional orders. The tour will initially cover the 10 most popular cities that currently follow us on the blog in the U.S.  We will complete the book by the end of this year, and launch the tour early next Spring.

The total cost of the production of the book, e-book and printing for 500 full color hard bound copies is estimated at $8500.00.

By reaching this goal of self-publishing, we will be able to maintain complete control of the content, writing style and photography - and fulfill our dream of creating Growing Simple.

Any money raised above and beyond the initial goal will go toward the printing of additional books for the purpose of adding more locations to the book tour to speak about and spread the benefits of Growing Simple

Thank you - Jim and Mary - and of course, the chickens! (who have included a special message for you at the bottom of the picture)

Risks and challenges

With balancing two full time jobs, the farm, our gardening and DIY website, and 2 children in high school and 2 more in college - our biggest obstacle has always been and will remain TIME. Time to schedule the book tour, time to edit, time to create, and time to finalize production.

But we are also firm believers that you make time for what you love and what you have a passion for - and Growing Simple is our passion!
