About

BACKGROUND: I'm Andrew Mentzer, reporter for the Boise Weekly and owner of Idahostel--Boise, Idaho's international traveler's hostel. In 1977, my dad Terry jumped on his Honda XL250 enduro motorcycle and headed west. 207 days later, he showed back up where he started--never having traveled in an easterly direction. His around the world tour turned out to be the first solo, continuous motorcycle circumnavigation ever formally documented. A few months later, he published a two-part feature in Motorcyclist Magazine about his adventure--which apparently blew the minds of many doubters, and rightly so. His publication predated Ted Simon’s Jupiter’s Travels by about one year, and Gregory Frazier’s Girdling the Globe by several decades.

The world was a very different place 35 years ago. There was obviously no high speed internet, facebook, or twitter... as a matter of fact, there weren't even roads in many of the areas that Papa Terry traveled. To think that this soft spoken, unassuming fellow from Coos Bay, Ore. would have the audacity to attempt such a journey was ludicrous. When he showed up at the Motorcyclist Magazine offices, ragged from the road, they couldn't help but listen to his story.

THE BOOK: So here we are in 2011, and I see a wonderful journalistic opportunity. How cool would it be to follow in my dad's footsteps and rediscover the world in a way that only father and son can? My aim is to chronicle the cultural and social dynamics of a rapidly changing world against a world that was comparatively static just 35 years earlier.

This undertaking is not an easy or cheap one. It will require some help from the good folks of Kickstarter in order to become a reality. What you'll get in return will hopefully be a highly poignant, deeply personal, and insightful look at the world from two distinct viewpoints:

1. Andrew Mentzer: 29 years old. Gen Y/Millenial

2. Terry Mentzer: 71 years old. Pre-Baby Boom.

The book will offer comparisons to my dad’s publication, with the addition of a deeper exploration of the following generational questions:

  • What are the most debilitating global misconceptions?
  • What has technology done to the world?
  • What sentiment exists across cultures?
  • What makes a border and what makes a barrier?
  • What has remained unchanged over the last 35 years?

Along the way, I will piece together the answers to these and many other questions, with a little help from the old man. His insights are what will make this project unique and valuable. All subject matter will be presented from the perspective of the people we meet/met on our respective routes—the folks on the street, in restaurants, and at hostels and pensions across the globe.

In addition to the book, I will maintain a detailed blog about my journey, with HD video, still photography, real time tracking, and stories about what is sure to be an interesting daily routine. You will have the opportunity to ride right alongside as I rediscover what my dad experienced so many years ago.

The key differences between our rides will be the result of war and politics. Where my dad traveled through India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran in 1977; I will ride through China, Kazakhstan, Russia and Ukraine in 2012. Either side of this detour, our paths will be mostly the same. In between lies infinite opportunity to learn about why our routes are different.

It is important to note that this is not necessarily a historical undertaking, but rather more of a cultural one. Nothing compares to traveling by motorcycle. You are completely exposed, and realize an intimacy with your surroundings that can be both inspiring and intimidating. This journey will be educational, adventure-filled, and offer wonderful insight to how we—as global citizens—view each other.

THE TRANS WORLD TRAVELERS RECIPE BOOK: In my travels, I have always found it fascinating how much the cuisine can change from one day to the next. A few years ago, I was traveling through the Czech Republic where I had my first taste of authentic goulash. It was fantastic! Two days later, I ordered the exact same dish in Budapest, Hungary, and it was entirely different—although equally delicious. Soup in one place, meat sauce with bread in the other. As a part of this project, I will assemble authentic, local staple recipes from across the globe and publish a companion cook book for the foodies who want an authentic view of how people eat around the world.

THE TRANS WORLD TOUR SUNSET PHOTO JOURNAL: Every evening, I will photograph the sun setting wherever I am. These pictures will go into a supplemental photo journal that will be included for backers at the $95 level or greater.
