Why This Podcast?
During the 2016 Presidential campaign, like many of us, I was stunned and saddened by the way people were treating each other just because of each person's choice of Presidential candidate. We may have different opinions, but each of us is more than our political viewpoints. I felt certain there must be a way for us to connect with each other and discuss our viewpoints without name-calling or heated fighting. I founded United and Together to help address these issues.
However, as I talked with people about having a conversation with someone who had differing political views, they felt overwhelmed. Most people said they had chosen just not to talk about politics or other sensitive topics. They didn't even know where or how to begin.
I decided to start a podcast to give people the tools they need to start having these much needed conversations. Also, I wanted to share examples from everyday people who have been able to keep their friendships and family relationships intact while still holding very different opinions.
If we can start truly listening to each other, we'll begin to understand each other. We'll discover why each of us feels the way we do, what's important to us, what we love and cherish in our lives, etc. And when that listening and understanding becomes a two-way street, we will begin forming connections with each other. We'll see each other for who we truly are, not a stereotype or shallow view of one another. We do NOT need to change our opinions, we just need to listen, understand each other, and connect with one another.
Who Will Be On the Podcast?
I'll interview experts in communication. For example,
- Professional Mediators
- Experts on dialogue
- Interfaith groups
- Politicians who are willing to work across the aisle
Also, I’ll have discussions with everyday people. For example,
- People who have struggled in their relationships because of the divide and how they handled these situations
- People on different sides of an issue

Risks and challenges
The two biggest challenges are time and securing guests. I work full-time and the podcast will be done in my free time. While time is an issue, my passion for this project is so overwhelming I will make the time to get it done.
I plan to have 3 episodes ready to go before I launch to avoid having an extra large gap between episodes. My starting goal is at least one new pocast a month. Hopefully as I gain momentum and experience, I can post every other week.
The other issue is finding guests. I have 3 people who have already committed to being on the podcast so the first 3 episodes are lined up. I've found the best way to make sure I have a guest is to send out requests to many people and try and get on their calendar. For busy people they need up to a month's notice. Keeping that in mind, I will reach out early and often.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
