About this project

In Coin & Crown, you and up to three opponents compete to control an ancient civilization, vying for power as you build up your troops and resources to conquer and cultivate as many lands as possible.

Each turn, you will draw coins from your coin purse for income, which can be spent as you see fit. What will you do with your limited wealth? Buy new resources? Harvest existing ones? Recruit new troops? Construct buildings to improve productivity? Donate to the church? Enhance your coin draw by exchanging with the Imperial Mint? Reserve money for next year?

It will take careful planning to grow your army and advance your empire! Every decision you make will help toward gaining victory points, with the winner being the player who has the most points by game end. Use your coins wisely to claim the crown!

Each round, players will draw 4 coins from their bag and then take turns deciding how to spend them. On your turn, you will choose from one of three actions:

In order to reign, you must conquer lands, which earn you points! The more lands you conquer, the more points you’ll earn. Lands can be conquered by force using your army or by diplomacy using your coins.

For each land you own, you have the opportunity to upgrade it to an even greater land! But to do so, you’ll need to dedicate resources (wheat, sheep, lumber, ore). In the above example, this hamlet needs ore and wheat to upgrade to a village. To upgrade it to a town, you will need two wheat and one lumber.

Of course, to do all this conquering and upgrading, you will need some cards from the market. You can purchase a card from the market by using the coins drawn at the beginning of the round.

For a more comprehensive overview, check out the video below by Steven Aramini, one of the designers for Coin & Crown:

Still not enough? Well, we've got you covered. Download and read the full rulebook here.

*Please note that the rulebook currently includes some cards that will be featured as stretch goals (we will update the rulebook after the campaign to include all the stretch goals).

"Very pure, very elegant... There's a lot going on, it's solid, it's fun, it's very easy to explain... It's really sharp, I'm very very impressed by it!" - Richard Ham, Rahdo Runs Through

"Loaded with strategic decisions each turn, Coin & Crown is a gorgeous and truly unique empire builder. It's also a ton of fun!"  - Chris Leder, designer of Roll For It and Trainmaker

"Multiple paths to victory! There's a lot of game in this box." - Matthew O'Malley, designer of Between Two Cities, Diner, and Knot Dice

“It feels a lot like Dominion, but streamlined, and, honestly, it feels very fresh. This game is simply a fun and easy game to play.” - Jason Glover, designer of Dig Down Dwarf and Four Tribes

“With its sleek graphic design and well-oiled mechanics, Coin & Crown offers a great experience regardless of what path you take to victory.” - Danny Devine, designer of Ghosts Love Candy and Topiary

We're hoping to keep the rewards for this campaign simple! The main reward will include a copy of the game and any applicable stretch goals. The MSRP for Coin & Crown will be $34.99. Backers can pledge for a copy for $24, a 32% discount. Get it at the best price and get it first!

Game bundles are available. Please see rewards section for packs of 2 or more and an even better discount. For additional copies beyond 2, please add $20 per game and shipping (see below).

Shipping & Customs

International shipping is available, but backers are expected to pay any applicable taxes/duties/customs/fees. The actual pledge amount for the game will be marked on the box for calculation purposes and it will be labeled as merchandise, not a gift. Fulfillment will be directly from China.

We're also going to try to keep shipping simple. US backers will pay $10 per copy, while all other locations will be asked to pay $13.

Stretch goals will be revealed as the game funds and goals are achieved. Without giving away too much right now, we'll say that we've got some cool stuff planned, including component upgrades (card stock, bag material upgrade, token upgrades) and a few additional gameplay elements (solo mode, new gold market cards).

Escape Velocity Games is an independent game publisher based in Baltimore, MD run by Steven Cole. Steven is the producer on this project and is most likely the one you will hear from if you send any questions or comments, which are quite welcome!

Coin & Crown was designed by Steven Aramini (designer of Barker's Row, Yardmaster, Groves, and Circle the Wagons) and Janice Baker, who also did the amazing graphic design work. Steven is a 2014 Ion Award Winner, as well as winner of two Game Crafter design challenges (Coin & Crown was the winner of one of them) and the Button Shy Wallet Contest.

Cover art was done by the talented Jeff Brown. For the Kickstarter video, music was provided by Kevin MacLeod and licensed under Creative Commons (Attribution 3.0 License).

Risks and challenges

Every project comes with its own risks and challenges, and this one will be no different. The final touches for manufacturing could be delayed, production could be slower than expected, errors could be found in pre-production proofs, or any number of things could happen to introduce a delay.

On a positive note, the game design, illustrations, graphic design, and playtesting are all complete. We're partnering with a proven manufacture, and this is Escape Velocity Games' fifth Kickstarter project. Our four previous projects have all been delivered to satisfied backers.

Thank you for trusting us and helping to make Coin & Crown a reality!
