UPDATE - JUNE 29
Galunker has now achieved TWICE its initial funding goal – which is just stunning – and we have two days to take this campaign into the stratosphere. As we've said, our real fantasy is to see Galunker find his way into every children's library in the nation.
For this, we would need to raise as much as we can - mainly in order to have a decent publicity budget for the book. These things *really* make a difference!
THANKS SO MUCH for what you've done to take us this far!
Let's keep pushing, for the sake of Galunker and his non-fictional friends :-)
So here’s how it’s going to work:
You'll get BONUSES as we raise more!
(In Kickstarter-speak, these are known as "stretch goals.")
EVERYONE who’s pledged $29 or more – now or in the future – will receive the following wonderful stuff, on top of the rewards they are already getting! Which they will then brag about to all of their friends.
$40,000: UNLOCKED!! :)
If our funding reaches this glorious height – which looks pretty likely – then everyone who’s pledged $29 or more – now or in the future - is going to receive (on top of what you’re already getting) a glorious Galunker bumper sticker, so that the car behind you will know just how cool you are. These stickers say, of course "Don't judge a dog by its cover." You’ll also get two stickers for people who are much too young to drive cars.
$50,000: UNLOCKED!! :)
If our funding reaches this stunning height, then our team of gorgeous pledgeniks ($29 or more, now or in the future) will each receive two Galunker greeting cards, illustrated by Dula, so that people you send greeting cards to will know just how cool you are.
When our funding climbs to this dizzying height, everyone who has pledged $29 or more, now or in the future, will receive a lavish digital version of the book. (In other words: A Galunker E-book!) Cool, right?
When we reach this magnificent sum, those of you who’ve pledged $29 or more, now or in the future, will see your already wonderful reward made significantly more wonderful when you receive a signed 8x10 limited edition print by Dula. This print will be of something that is now, to everyone except Dula, a mystery.
Well, that was fun.
Galunker is a pit bull.
Galunker looks really mean, but is about as threatening as a marshmallow. He is rescued from an evil dogfighting ring, but now the dogcatcher is determined to take him back to an evil shelter. And Galunker? All he wants is a nice home.
(NOTE: we're not suggesting that all shelters are evil, by any means. Only the ones that kill perfectly healthy pit bulls, just for being pit bulls. And these are unfortunately far from rare.)
Galunker is above all an entertaining story: a rhyming book in the spirit of Dr. Seuss, with beautiful illustrations. It is a tale about a friendship between two underdogs, and their flight from injustice.
It is also, however, an effort to address Breed Specific Legislation: the “aggressive breed” bias against dogs like Rottweilers, Dobermans, and Pit Bulls.
Nobody is suggesting, irresponsibly, that children be in any way exposed to dangerous animals. The book includes an essay at the end, aimed at parents: we refer to the latest studies, in order to separate science from superstition. This essay will help parents make informed decisions before introducing ANY dog into the family home.
We are a guy, a gal, and a fictional pit bull.
Galunker is written by Douglas Anthony Cooper, a bestselling novelist.
Galunker is illustrated by Dula Yavne, an artist whose work has been published and displayed around the world.
Galunker himself is a pit bull. He is an illustration. But he is inspired by Rain, a fabulous dog who is not an illustration.
Galunker was hated by all of mankind.
And it bothered Galunk. And I'll bet that you'd mind.
Because nobody likes to be hated, I deem,
No matter how hateful they happen to seem.
You would hate to be hated if you were a worm
Or a spider or lizard or rodent or germ.
You'd find this forlornsome if you were a snake
Who snuck through the forest and lurked in the lake.
(It is hardly your fault if you sneak and you lurk
If sneaking and lurking are just how you work.)
You'd resent this if you were a freak or a frog
And Galunker was none of these things.
Just a dog.
No, Galunker was not even hateful at all.
He bolted and bounced; he did not even crawl.
(And crawling is not such a rotten thing, too
If crawling is what you were brought up to do.)
But hated he was, and he always had been
For Galunker, though never his fault,
Looked real mean.
His name was tattooed on the back of his ear
Which helped him look fierce (didn't help him to hear).
It was never his fault that the people he met
Upon meeting Galunker became so upset,
That they flinched or they frowned
or they scrammed or they screamed;
He was not even slightly the way that he seemed.
And today poor Galunker was really a mess
So it's time that we started this story, I guess....
(THE REST IS IN THE BOOK, OF COURSE :) )
Galunker will be a hardcover, printed on the finest paper. The funds will cover the production, design and printing of the book, as well as the creation of various other rewards. It will also cover some publicity, and (sigh) taxes.
These are some of the rewards you will get with the book, based on the amount you decide to pledge (see the reward tiers chart further down the page):
Galunker T-shirts and tank tops (American Apparel Tri-Blend: 50% Polyester, 25% Cotton and 25% Rayon)
MORE ABOUT THE KICKSTARTER PROCESS:
Kickstarter is a unique experience, differing from the usual online buying process. It is not simply a matter of choosing an item and buying a speedy arrival--you are joining us in the adventure of creating and completing this project. The result, in this case: a book that can be enjoyed, shared, or gifted, and would hopefully help replace misinformation and fear, with knowledge and LOVE.
How to get started:
Step 1. Decide which Pledge description you like (we ship internationally. no additional fees required!)
Step 2. Create a Kickstarter account determine payment method.(it's super simple).
Step 3. Wait and see what happens! If our campaign is successful, in 30 days, your account will be charged and your reward is secured. If our campaign is unsuccessful, then you will NOT be charged. (a belated addition: Thankfully, we did meet our initial funding goal - so everyone who pledge from now on can be rest assured: they will definitely get the book and the other rewards they've pledged for).
However, * we still need every dollar we can raise *, As specified at the top of this page, :)
Step 4. If you would like to join in helping this project succeed, then feel free to spread the word! Tweets, Facebook shares, blog posts, going door to door (joking) -- any and all efforts will help reach more and more people, and potentially ( fingers crossed) help find many loving homes to these lovely creatures.
Risks and challenges
We've spent the last months learning everything we can about publishing and printing.
We know it's not fun to wait more than 6 months for a book, but in the normal publishing industry, printed books take even longer.
Here's our plan:
1. Completing the book
The hard part is basically over. The story is almost finished. The visual language has been decided upon: all of the main characters have been designed, along with a number of pages. The rest requires tons of effort, but Dula will be working on this full-time. (If we feed her and give her a few hours to sleep.)
2. Printing the book
We have done all our homework in advance. We know exactly where we'll be printing, so production problems shouldn't be an issue. We expect there won't be delays. (If there are any, we will let you know, of course. You'll be updated throughout this process.)
3) Shipping the book and the other rewards
You'll receive the T-shirts and totes earlier than the book. So that's something, right?
We are overwhelmingly committed to this project. It has consumed our lives, and will continue to do so until Galunker arrives, barking, on your doorstep.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
