Yay, new video! Julianne had fun helping me make it..10 days to go!!
Inspiration behind Winifred Bean
Like many brides before me, the search for my wedding dress was frustrating. I found the wedding dress world very bridal, fussy and over-embellished. I wanted a simple, stylish, cool and classic gown. I also wanted a chance to get creative but designing my own dress seemed so daunting – I just wanted to take tops from certain dresses and put them with bottoms to other dresses…so while planning my own wedding the idea came to me. Create a cool line of dresses that you can interchange tops to bottoms to make them your own. DIY dresses for creative, stylish brides. And who better than to name my line after but my grandmother – the most cool and stylish lady I knew – Sally Winifred Bean.
I’ve worked in the fashion industry for 10 years so I was able to reach out to my network to find people to help me create my line. I found a patternmaker and seamstress in the garment district of NYC to develop and produce my gowns, a technical designer to make sure they were easily interchangeable, amazing fabrics at one of the top fabric suppliers in NYC and got to work.
With the help of personal financing and family I was able to design and develop the launch collection which was completed late last year. It has been a great year - I've had some nice press with some well known fashion blogs and have sold my dresses through my online shop on Etsy.
And what made it an even better year was the birth of my daughter, Julianne. I've always dreamed of having my own business so I could have flexibility in my work and personal life when I started a family. And last year both dreams became a reality.
But now I'm ready to take the next big step with Winifred Bean. I am ready to grow Winifred Bean and start building a business that will allow me to hopefully spend even more time with my little peanut.
This is where you and Kickstarter come in. I am humbly asking for your kind support for this next leg of my journey..
With the funds from Kickstarter I am going to take the line to market where they will be exposed to stores and brides across the US and around the world! I plan on attending the International Bridal Market in NYC this October along with Vera Wang and all the big wigs..
I would also like to develop a 2nd set of samples so that while the dresses are off at market and trunk shows, I can still hold private appointments out of my home.
What's happened so far:
- The launch collection is designed, developed, photographed and ready for purchase on Etsy!
- A number of dresses have already been worn by some very happy brides - including my fit model Anna. This is a picture from her gorgeous wedding. She cried when she tried on this dress!
-Marketing: I've received some great exposure in well known wedding blogs, here are some hightlights: Green Wedding Shoes http://greenweddingshoes.com/winter-wedding-ideas-fun-in-the-snow/) and Style Me Pretty Georgia (http://www.stylemepretty.com/georgia-weddings/2011/11/23/cotton-field-bridal-shoot-by-love-is-a-big-deal/). I also love blogging and truly enjoy all the industry professtionals I've built relationships with.
- I had the opportunity to take part in a series of interviews for Entrepreneur magazine about the challenges of starting a business with a new baby at home. http://www.entrepreneur.com/video/223860
- Website: This fall I will be launching my website, www.winifredbean.com
- Production: I have partnered with a very talented patternmaker in the garment district of NYC. She and her team are opened their own facility about 2 years ago. More business for me means more business for her. Our production facility is also located in the garment district and produces dresses for other designers such as Badgley Mischka and Diane Von Furstenberg.
Why Winifred Bean?
When you purchase a Winifred Bean gown you get an exceptionally well-made dress at a very reasonable price. Each dress is designed and made in the US by a small group of people who really love what they do. Creatively, you can have fun with the Winifred Bean dresses and mix and match until you find something that fits your style. And finally, when you wear a Winifred Bean dress you become a part of a fashionable bridal community focused on supporting local, creative, and cool talent.
Although wedding dresses is the business, I am designing other items to offer as incentives. Such as..
Homemade Vegan, Organic Lip Balm: Coconut, Mint, Mango, Pomegranate and Peach
Winifred Bean Clutch: Customizable - Choose your own fabrics!
Other incentives include an organic tote with the Winifred Bean logo and best of all, one of my dresses! In another color if you're not getting married.
How Kickstarer Works: Kickstarter is a "crowd-funding" website that allows friends, family and strangers to back creative projects that they believe in, like Winifred Bean! Kickstarter campaigns only last for a limited amount of time and in order for us to get our money in the end, we have to meet or exceed our goal. Kickstarter is an "all or nothing" platform so if we do not raise our entire goal by the deadline, everyones pledges will be returned to them in full and we won't receive anything at all.
So please DONATE! No amount is too small - all of it is incredibly helpful and will be so much appreciated! And when you are done please share! Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, blogs, you name it!
I cannot wait to see what lies ahead for Winifred Bean - and am so grateful to have you along for the ride.
