We've recorded a beautiful record, and we need your help sharing it with the world!

Alex getting mushy:

It is hard to sum up what I have accomplished under the name Cumulus in the last 6 years. What started out as just strumming the guitar and writing songs for my friends became how I processed my world. All of the life changes I encountered seemed to make more sense when I put them into song. My friends related to the words I wrote, and started singing along. Music became something I just had to do. You may already know some of the songs on this record, because these songs have become a documentation of my life in the last six years- the heartbreaks, friendships, moments of desperation and moments of optimism found in unlikely places. It’s a documentation of my development as a songwriter and particularly my transition to band leader. Some of these songs were among the first I ever wrote, while others are only a few weeks old.I want to release this record because you have believed in me. You have brought me into your living rooms, you’ve come to my shows, you’ve booked my band, you’ve downloaded my songs, you’ve encouraged me to keep working at what I love and now I am ready to put this record into the world.

The band and the record:

Guitarist Lance Umble and I had originally started our friendship in Anacortes during our high school years, and running into each other in Seattle after years of distance pretty much cemented the fact that we were meant to play music together. In the summer of 2012, we played a Bruce Springsteen tribute show at Porchlight Coffee and came across Leah Julius. We connected instantly, and she picked up the bass and wrote her own parts in a matter of weeks. It only seemed right to record our first full length record in the town that inspired Lance and I the most, so after recruiting Kyle Holland and Ryan Sprute on drums we packed up and headed to Anacortes.
We spent twelve-hour days inside The Unknown, a church turned recording studio created by Phil Elverum. Having already heard the beauty of Clear Moon, Elverum’s first 2012 Mount Eerie release recorded in The Unknown, we knew this was the studio we wanted to record in. With the engineering help of a former Department of Safety roommate Nicholas Wilbur, we had everything we needed. The Unknown was perfect for the sound we wanted; a combination of live and studio, digital and analog. Hearing Lance’s guitar lines float to the top of the chapel as I rested among stained glass and worn-in couches, isolating guitars amps in the confessional, marimbas, fog machine haze, and gongs taller than myself - the experience of making this record was truly magical. After six years of writing, performing, collaborating, and turning these songs inside out, they finally became complete.

Why we need you:

We have already paid for the recording process with money saved up from shows, but we need your help with the finishing touches and successfully releasing this record!

This Kickstarter campaign will provide us with:

  • A professional re-mixing and mastering of our completed record
  • A national PR campaign that will get this album in the hands of publications and blogs across the country
  • A pressing of 500 vinyl records
  • A run of 1,000 cds that will be distributed nationally to college radio stations
  • Merchandise for us to take on tour and give out as rewards to you, our wonderful backers

Any additional money will go towards helping us take this record on the road so we can visit all of our friends outside of Washington State. Whether you have been following Cumulus and listening for 6 years, or only a week, here is your chance to make this record the best it can be. "I NEVER MEANT IT TO BE LIKE THIS" has been a long time coming, and we cannot wait to share it with the world.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

We have high hopes about releasing our record in May, but if we don't reach our Kickstarter goal, we will have some tough decisions to make about when and how we should put out the record. That being said, since we are already finished with the actual recording process, if we are successful in our fundraising, the record will definitely be released this spring!

We are so appreciative of your help, both with this fundraising project and of all of the support you have given us up to this point. Thank you for encouraging us and following our journey up to this point!
