Getting your nutrition spot on is essential to performance.
With EatMyRide you can instantly create the best foodplan for you, it tells you what to eat during your cycling rides. This app will be made available on iOS and Android Smartphones and a regular website.
Foodplan during cycling rides
This if the key feature of EatMyRide and works for any type of ride you plan to make and can include any type of food you wish to take (also baked yourself).
You simply need to select:
- Your ride (as in your .gpx files or any prelisted rides)
-Your preferred foods, like a banana, a specific sportsbar or any other product you like. You can even create products (like self baked).
The app tells you how much to eat, in which order and when.
See the Foodplan in the below picture, such plans which will be generated based on the Ride and Food you consider (as you can fill in in the Ride and Food pages). You can easily adjust the Foodplan by clicking on the orange buttons next to each food item to switch or to erase and the Foodplan will generate a new version.
You can select any kind of nutrition you like such as the below examples or anything else you like.
When to eat?
Imagine you will be climbing a mountain and need to eat during the climb. The app will tell you where to eat, not only in timings but also location based if preferred (by estimating the area you will be in).
Foodplan before or after cycling rides
The EatMyRide app does not only provide foodplans during cycling rides but can also select and assess solid pre- or post-activity meals.
You can fill in exactly what you did eat (up to recipes) and get feedback in return on how you could adjust the nutrition you take prior to your rides and/or after them to ensure physical recovery.
Aim of this Kickstarter project
We have already created & tested the algorithm which is able to predict what you need to eat during every cycling ride.
The purpose of this Kickstarter project is to make it available for a large audience in a simple to use app and get more user responses.
Screen 1 - Profile page where you can add your user specific information so we can ensure the Foodplans fit your energy needs. Select simple or advanced to add metrics like VO2Max.
Screen 2 - Ride page where you can select your ride either from well-known events or self-created routes (.gpx), date&time make sure weather forecasts are added to the prediction.
Screen 3 - Food page where you can add your favorite snacks. Our database covers all nutrition values for >50k products. The '!' symbol warns you of potential stomach ache risks.
Screen 4 - Foodplan page where you can see the optimal foodplan based on your predicted energy needs.You can adjust foods and timings to suit your needs and it will re-calculate.
App development can be costly so we operate in steps to at least be able to deliver you the app also with a lower budget. The more pledges we receive the more we can build.
Please notice that the algorithm is already working which also means that technical steps like data preparation is already developed. We mainly still need to develop the dashboard and make it easy to use from multiple devices.
Step 1 - You will receive the EatMyRide app with the following functionalities:
- Create foodplans to use during your cycling rides (including drinking if pledged for)
- Verify your pre and post-cycling meals to improve your breakfasts and after cycling recovery meals
- Scrape-tool to easily download your historic rides and upload them to the EatMyRide server
- Get 'eat' notifications during cycling rides on your smartphone
- Export your foodplans to PDF or Print on stickers
- Receive EatMyRide as a native-app for iOS or Android or web-app (Chrome or IE).
- Database with over 50.000 food products
- Over 1,000 cycling courses pre-programmed (like GranFondos)
- Ability to create cycling snacks or pre/post cycling meals by adding ingredients
Step 2 - On top of the functionalities above we will:
- Replace manual download/upload of your historic rides by a simple click.
- Showing your real-time progress on condition indexes influencing your nutrition needs
Step 3 - Create the perfect user experience:
- Download EatMyRide on your smartwatch / cycling-device to receive real-time notifications during your cycling rides
With the Kickstarter Funding Goal money we can deliver step 1. The total investment for all 3 steps will be conderably higher on an estimated € 20.000 (depending on the number of device brands to be included).
We strongly believe that food (nutrition) is a key element to sports performance next to training and rest. Good nutrition will improve sports performance and will also make you feel better.
Besides eating enough our stomach is usually not resistant to consume most kind of sugars for too long. Therefore our foodplan is based on a balance of the right kind of sugars including as well fibers, proteins and fats to the extend usefull.
The algorithm is tested on a cyclist group of approximately 50 different people who shared their historic cycling data (based on Strava or devices) and medical records. The predictions of EatMyRide on their cycling rides have been used to improve their own foodplans. This has been tested on both males, females, younger and older people and with various condition levels on various rides (flat, hills, mountains).
The main actor in the movie is Jelle Wijnja who is a fanatical rider on flat and GranFondo courses. Most notably he finished 3rd position in the 2018 Marmotte Alpes and joined the UCI GranFondo WC in Varese finishing top-35. The EatMyRide algorithm adjusted his prior foodplans, contributing to his success on those and multiple other races and trainings.
Simply said the energy your body needs during cycling can either come from nutrition (via the glycogen storage) or body fat. These needs can be calculated based on the nine elements above as well as the rider specific profile.
All your historic scores are matched against a database within our AI-based platform including over a 10,000 prior rides as well as metabolic values based on over 1,500 medical tests.
Risks and challenges
The development of EatMyRide has so far been incredibly rewarding for us. We have spent the last 12 months working on it very intensively and created a solid algorithm on a relatively low budget.
This included hiring of externals based on the money we could spend from our own pockets (we already invested more then we need from Kickstarter). This team is ready to deliver all needed product features.
Software development can include unforeseen difficulties, our experiences so far restrict these risks.
There have already been many prototype iterations and lots of user testing has been done and we expect to undertake many more iterations.
To be able to provide solid predictions and foodplans, the algorithm needs to know how you (or people like you) handled cycling circumstances before. This has proved to work best on rides which are challenging. For instance long rides or rides with substantial elevation or wind. The harder cycling gets for you, the more your body will follow a pattern.
For the 'easier rides' we will add a few simple buttons making sure we know if you e.g. intend to perform a speed-contest or a lazy sunday ride. This might influence your foodplan.
Users need to provide their historic cycling rides data because without it we cannot predict how the elements like elevation, speed and wind affect the intensity for you (this is typically different for everyone). Depending on the extra funds we recieve on top of the bare minimum we will be able to improve this process making it very user friendly (Step 3).
