Stretch Goals Announced :: 9 May 2014
Please have a look at the updates for the exciting stretch goals.
What is Not Knot?
Not Knot is a cable tidy created by the Blue Marmalade design studio. Despite being less than 1 millimetre thick, when folded it creates a tough protective shell for your ear buds and in-line controls that you can wrap your cable around to shorten them to a manageable length for every day use, or while travelling.
Not Knot’s inventors like to do things differently in their small design studio in the heart of the beautiful city of Edinburgh. Looking at not just how to make things functionally better, but how to make things in a better, less wasteful way, keeping Edinburgh and the rest of the environment we all live in beautiful. Not Knot’s eco-credentials shine brightly, as it’s made from their unique 100% recycled and recyclable plastic, and like the rest of the Blue Marmalade product family; it will be manufactured in Britain to a zero landfill policy.
Not Knot doesn't discriminate against cable types, so all your wires can be as knot-free as they day you brought them home.
Not Knot also offers you something different from existing products. It keeps your cable heads, ear buds and volume controls safe in its shell, so you won’t need any more replacements.
Not Knot is flat and very thin - at less than a millimetre thick, and easy to store, so it’s always there for you when you need it.
This intelligently designed companion can be carried in anything from pockets and wallets, to phone cases - or why not use it as a bookmark? It will easily and simply fold into a hard shell ready for use.
The material Not Knot is made from means it can be folded thousands of times without breaking, so we hope you will enjoy your Not Knot for many years to come.
Graphic Design Alternatives
Not Knot, like everybody, likes to be individual but still relevant; so we've created four different graphic designs for it to wear, and all with a subtle relevance.
- Underground Edition: Ideal for commuters or graphic design geeks
- Explorer Knots: Traditional knot diagrams from the last century
- Music History - Mono: Iconic music devices from the past 100 years
- Music History - Colour: Iconic music devices in pop art colours
The Not Knot Story
Not Knot isn't Blue Marmalade’s only creation. Two particular products, their Tempest pendant and Cog Classic Underground Edition; played an important part in Not Knot’s story.
The eco-concious designers at Blue Marmalade design to a zero landfill policy, so Not Knot was first born from the offcuts of the beautiful Tempest Pendant Light Shade. Not Knot was supposed to follow in the footsteps of its parent product soon after Tempest was released, but Not Knot lingered behind, hindered by standard tooling limitations. It was good, but it wasn't perfect.
That's when the Cog Classic Underground came to the rescue. Not Knot was re-born and its design tweaked to fit into the printing margins of the Cog Classic Underground pendant light shade, which is how it gained its sharp new graphics.
In House Start
Originally Not Knot was confined to use in the studio, and gifted to friends and family or visitors of Blue Marmalade, who all loved it.
However, when I began my student placement at Blue Marmalade three months ago; I discovered Not Knot for the first time. My involvement with this product was just supposed to be an introduction to packaging design and graphics, but one month, and a completed packaging design later; I have fallen for this ingenious tool. I believe it has great potential, and should be released, after all, everyone deserves a second chance and it now looks so good.
The packaging I have designed for Not Knot will be made from 100% recycled cardboard and holds 3 Not Knots securely, while conveying the product use and instructions on the inside. I would love to hear any constructive comments about my packaging design - if you have any graphic suggestions or improvements please feel free to comment and we will take this on board for the final production design.
This will be the first commercial project I have worked on, and I would like to see it through to the end. I need the backing of Kickstarter to show the company that it is worth releasing, and to fund the packaging and print that I have designed with Blue Marmalade. Luckily, Not Knot was cleverly incorporated into the Cog Classic Underground Edition tooling in a modular way that allows Not Knot to be run on its own in the future when volumes pick up.
May: Kickstarter Campaign Finish

Only a few days to go!
Well we're approaching the end of our exciting Not Knot Kickstarter campaign! - and we thought we might share some choice moments from the making our the video with you all. Hope you find them as funny as we have in the studio.
Risks and challenges
The risks and challenges involved in the manufacture and release of Not Knot are fairly small, considering Blue Marmalade’s existing expertise, industry links and successes with other products. The new Not Knot products are now perfect as proven by the small initial production run that tested the tooling. Now the packaging is designed a production tool needs to be made along with a print run. This run will be a full volume run so the quantities produced will be large and costly. The modular tool also needs to be run separately and this will also incur some cost.
The real thing that Not Knot needs is your confidence and support in raising the initial order quantities to sustain a production run;
and also perhaps the biggest challenge is to get people to listen to a student designer.
If we are lucky enough to raise the funding for this project to go ahead that will be fantastic! - but should we exceed this goal any additional funds raised will go towards producing Point Of Sale stands to hold and present Not Knot in stores. This will greatly benefit the project and enable Not Knot to be sold in stores, widening Not Knot's audience.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
