About

Hi, we're Primates Incorporated, and we are getting ready to celebrate the grand opening of our long-awaited new primate sanctuary near Westfield, Wisconsin, and the retirement of 5 new primates!

To mark this momentous occasion, we would like to create t-shirts and a few other cool items with this awesome new illustration and design (read About the Design, below) that captures our fun and proactive vision for retiring monkeys.

Please help us bring this project to life!

1. Design & Development
A lot of work went into creating the artwork and this Kickstarter campaign. And we believe in the value of creative work. So while this cost is a decent portion of the overall cost, it is still a much-discounted price compared to its actual value. Therefore, 35% of each sale will go toward the cost of creative.
Estimated Cost: $3,000

2. Printing
The artwork has already been approved for printing, so once we meet our fundraising goal, we can schedule a production date right away!

We love supporting local businesses whenever possible and having the ability to be on site for press checks, so Screen Door Studios, in our hometown of Madison, Wisconsin will be our printer for t-shirts and tote bags. We have collaborated with them many times over the years, and they do an excellent job and offer competitive pricing. 45% of each sale will go toward the cost of printing.
Estimated Cost: $4,000

3. Extra Merchandise
The extra merchandise purchased will allow us to sell them at our grand opening and other future events.
Estimated Cost: $2,000

4. Kickstarter & Processing Fees
Kickstarter + payment processor fees account for about 10% of overall cost.
Estimated Cost: $1,000

Shipping

We can only ship within United States. Once we receive all the printed pieces, we will gather, sort, package, and ship the items. Delivery time from post office to your home will be about 7 business days after we confirm all items are ready to ship.
Cost: $7-$19 (per flat-rate USPS box)

We will follow up during the production process (through this Kickstarter page and emails) to our funders about how things are progressing.

That You Receive

You and everyone around you will smile when the shirt is seen or worn. And you will know that you personally had a hand in giving back to monkeys who have played a role in helping humans live healthier, longer, more comfortable lives

That We Receive

A successful campaign will tell us that people really do care about our cause! We also feel it will bring more awareness and spark new conversations about giving back to the primates.

In 2004, Amy Kerwin founded Primates Incorporated while working with 97 rhesus monkeys for five years in a laboratory at the University of Wisconsin. She began networking with labs who had retirement programs in place and discovered existing sanctuaries often had to turn away laboratories due to funding and space constraints. Those monkeys who had a brief chance at retirement will likely not get another opportunity.

According to the 2016 USDA animal care report, there are approximately 110,000 monkeys living in U.S. research laboratories. Some researchers have asserted that sanctuaries are unnecessary because the monkeys are re-used or euthanized.

To solve this problem, Amy developed a flatly-run 501(c)3 nonprofit organization run and empowered by women, in order to create a sustainable indoor/outdoor primate sanctuary. And now, after 15 years of really, really hard work, it is finally a reality! To learn even more, visit primatesinc.com.

Amy’s husband, Michael created the artwork you see here. He is an independent Brand Identity Designer and Illustrator at Phonographik Design Studio. The concept came to him while brainstorming the new visual identity for the organization.

One afternoon he was feeding their cat an extra sloppy bowl of canned cat food. Upon hearing him eat, he thought, “Mmm, lip smackin’ good!”. What an enjoyable phrase! Turns out, “lip smacking”, while typically referenced in the vicinity of food, is also a natural trait in monkeys, which they do to show affection for each other. Well then, what better tagline to promote this nonprofit’s mission to improving the quality of life for monkeys!

Vintage cereal advertising was another inspiration because it ties in nicely with the idea of wholesome and delicious. To further this idea, a Nutritional Facts panel was created for the back of the shirt and tote bag, highlighting the benefits each monkey receives when they retire at Primates Incorporated.

Risks and challenges

1. Color. Depending on the computer screen your using to view this in, the colors may vary slightly.

2. Fabric. Slight color imperfections in fabric may occur due to organic yarns having small striations in the natural fibers. This is an inherent trait of organic fabric.

3. Printing. There is always the possibility of an unseen vendor delay, which we cannot predict nor change. But we've always had great results with the vendors we work with, so chances are very small. Plus we think we have estimated the delivery time with some time to spare, in that rare case where something does go askew.
