The date is May 7, 1896. On this day H.H. Holmes was hanged, for the murder of at least 9 innocent victims. Or was he?
Perhaps, in an alternate reality, he succeeded in framing an unknowing employee of his famous Horror Hotel? Let's find out!
Holmes' Horror Hotel is a fast-paced deduction card game with a strong push your luck mechanic. Use the Clue cards you draw and your investigative skills to identify Holmes, while avoiding the traps he sets up for you and your coworkers. Or, play as Holmes and try to eliminate as many of those pesky, meddling employees as you can!
What makes this game unique?
Before the game starts, every player receives a character at random. One of these players will play as H.H. Holmes, the owner of the hotel, while the others play as one of the employees of the hotel. Everyone places their character card face down in front of them.
The goal for H.H. Holmes is to remain hidden until only one employee remains alive. The goal for the employees is to figure out which player is Holmes before that happens.
The draw pile is placed in the middle of the table, with room to the side for a discard pile. This draw pile contains Clue, Trap and Dead End cards.
So, how do you play Holmes' Horror Hotel?
The rules are finished in English, French and Dutch, and can be downloaded here :
If you want to contribute and translate the rules into Guatemalese, Xhosa, Tibetan, Klingon, or any other language, just let us know in a KS message or mail us at email@example.com
You can also download a print-and-play that's easy to print out at home. This PNP features only 1 piece of artwork for the Clues/Traps/Dead Ends :
The PNP version that you can pledge for is of course a full version identical to the physical game. There will be a small watermark though, to prevent counterfeiting.
What Reviewers Say
The game was reviewed by Nox' Spellenzolder (Nox' Game Attic in Dutch), a review video is available in English and Dutch. The review also features an overview of the setup and an explanation of how to play...
(The prototype used for the review was an earlier version with temporary artwork. While the cards visually differ from the final version, the gameplay remains the same.)
There will only be a few stretch goals in this campaign. Personally, we love them, as long as they fit the campaign. Starting off with low quality components, just to offer the high quality ones as a stretch goal, no thanks! So, we offer the complete game right from the start, made with great materials. The stretch goals below will only add additional artwork or extra cards. The only exception is the box : when we reach 7,500€, the game box will be upgraded from a tuckbox to a 2-part box with lid.
Because we love all of our backers and want to thank them for their support, we have unlocked the first stretch goal for free, on the house!
What's in the box?
What's in the box? Come on, what's in the box? Serial killers love to hear you scream that question at them.
Holmes' Horror Hotel comes in a tuckbox, until we reach the box upgrade Stretch Goal. Inside the box you will find :
- A folded rules leaflet
- 10 Character cards
- 31 Dead End cards (featuring 4 unique Dead Ends)
- 16 Clue cards (featuring 4 unique Clues)
- 13 Trap cards (Featuring 6 unique Traps)
When more Stretch Goals are achieved, more artwork for Dead Ends, Clues and Traps will be unlocked, bringing more visual variety to the game!
Holmes' Horror Hotel will be sent to your doorstep by Spiral Galaxy in the UK. We have years of experience with them, both as a company and as Kickstarter backers. When we receive packages from them, they are always safely packaged with care.
The only problem is Brexit... We are fully confident the game will be shipped before October 31st, in which case the UK is probably still within the EU and there is no problem. Beyond that date, there might be a trade deal and again no problem. However, when the odds turn out against us, we do have a backup fulfilment service in Germany.
In any case, the shipping costs are already included in your pledge. Whatever happens, you will not be paying more, any unforeseen costs will be paid by us.
EU : Shipping is EU-friendly, we will ship from within the EU, so no additional import duties or taxes will be charged to you.
US and Australia : Shipping to the United States and Australia will also be friendly. When we have enough backers from the USA/Australia, we will use local fulfilment services withing US/AU. But even when your rewards ship from the EU to US/AU, the reward value will be well below the duty-free limit, so no additional import duties or taxes will be charged to you, even when you pledge for a group pledge.
Canada : Shipping to Canada will mean additional duties or taxes to our Canadian backers. However, these extra costs will be very low. For single pledges, as well as group pledges, the extra costs will vary between $1-4 CAD per copy.
Outside EU/US/CAN/AU, we cannot guarantee import duties or taxes won't occur, or how high they will be. But we're always willing to help figure it out!
We have selected a reliable printing partner within Europe, and one as a back-up just in case. When comparing quotes, the prices we received from the best European printers were actually better than those of the bigger Chinese printers. Communication will also go a lot more smoothly and there will be no shipping delays with container ships. So this decision was a no-brainer for us.
We left some wiggle room in the timeline above, so small delays will not result in a late delivery. We feel confident every backer will have received their game at the end of October 2019.
We will keep backers informed on the production process through regular updates.
Risks and challenges
Enthony (Carrotz) developed this game for over 2 years, and only when he was satisfied about everything being well balanced, did he start looking for ways to publish Holmes' Horror Hotel. And that's where Tom and Boardgamebusters came in. Tom already has publishing and manufacturing experience in board games and novels, as part of publisher Red Eyed Rabbit. He helped authors develop their board games, edited components and rulebooks, prepared printing files, ... To cut to the chase, Enthony developed a great game and Tom knows how to turn it into great looking physical copies.
The challenge is now to reach enough people who can help us realize this project.
So where are the risks, you might ask. As with most Kickstarter projects, the timeline and delivery date are not always under our control. We built in safety margins for each phase of the project and just to be sure, we added some more. Therefore we believe the current delivery date is very realistic, but there are always unforeseen challenges, which we will resolve as efficiently as possible and with as little delay for our backers.
Of course, we might also be murdered in a hotel. That's a risk too. But then again, so might you be. Who knows...Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
