MEMENTO, A NEW Bicycle Playing Card Deck
Memento, a unique Playing Card Deck designed by Valerio Aversa, inspired by the history of playing card design. Printed By USPCC
A memento helps us remember, reminisce and relive experiences long past…
…the Memento Deck refocuses the art of card design to its very roots. The emphasis is twofold, the historical figures traditionally portrayed in the playing cards we all know and love, and the symbolic meaning of each suit.
The standard court cards of today trace their design roots back to the 16th century. The individuals portrayed on each card are figures of historical significance, heroines and heroes from antiquity, biblical sources and latter European history such as Charlemagne.
Over the centuries and various iterations, each card has evolved and incurred many changes. This deck addresses these changes by going back to basics and using prominent works of art as templates. The emphasis with each figure is on defining features and characteristics often found in the detail. More info below ;)
King Of Spades, King David
David was, according to the Bible, the second king of the United Kingdom of Israel and Judah.
The portrayal of David differs somewhat in the French and English decks, showing a harp and sword respectively. He typically faces forward and slightly to the right.
David is depicted in playing cards and art as a righteous king, but not without his faults. He is a warrior, a musician and a poet.
‘…I remember King David, with his harp and his beautiful, beautiful songs…’ ‘…David is holding Goliath’s sword which he took and used to behead Goliath…’
This design combines these two prominent characteristics associated with David and portrays him with Goliath’s curved sword and his harp.
Queen of Diamonds, Rachel
The Queen of Diamonds is called 'Rachel' on the French deck, possibly after the biblical character. She is holding a flower and faces forward and a little to the left.
As per the bible, Rachel is the favourite wife of Jacob, one of the three Biblical Patriarchs and the mother of Joseph and Benjamin. She was a shepherdess and thus the lamb is frequently found in works of art depicting her.
Jack of Hearts, La Hire
The origins of 'La Hire' are uncertain but may refer to a companion of arms to Joan of Arc, Étienne 'La Hire' de Vignolles. He is typically depicted with a moustache, holding a leaf in the right hand, an axe behind his head and facing left (i.e. the profile of his face can be seen).
The origin of the leaf is unclear, it’s argued that it was a mistake by an artist around 1800 misinterpreting a truncheon. However, in literature passages talk about people covering La Hire ‘with leaves and flowers.’
The meaning of his nickname is said to be ‘the wrath of God’ and his reputation at the time was for being a notorious bandit and pillager to the extent where mothers would threaten naughty children with ‘La Hire will get you.’
The grapes represent the coat of arms of the house Vignolles.
More card designs and their stories will be revealed over the course of the campaign!
Here you can see the numbered cards laid out. Of note is the presence of the number in each corner which can serve to improve the playability for left-handed players.
The respective suits have been distributed according to specific geometric rules and practices to ensure symmetry and elegance. The suits themselves, where possible, have been mirrored in line with the court cards.
The Uncut Sheet
The story behind the uncut sheet is simple. The aim was to make it stand out and allow for it to be a piece of art you could display. Therefore, in order for the end result to be as aesthetically pleasing as possible, the typical order of the cards on an uncut sheet was rearranged to yield a pattern that nicely flows and accommodates each suit from the centre diagonal outward to a corner.
For those who are buying the standard decks it means that the cards come 'pre-shuffled' because the order on the uncut sheet determines the order in which they are placed in the box.

The design is complete, it has gone through many iterations to reach this stage thanks to help and support from card enthusiasts, however that does not mean it is set in stone. Please voice any concerns you may have, or what you would like to see more of. We view this as a collaborative effort to, at the end of the day, create something beautiful and unique that everyone can enjoy playing with and having in their collection.
If you have any questions or feedback, please get in touch!
This project drew on lessons from our first Kickstarter endeavour the ALPHA Deck. Although unsuccessful, it allowed us to better understand the process and the relationship between project and backer far better.
Concurrently, the design was adapted to meet our personal high expectations and the standards of the Card Collecting/Playing community.
As a result, we are able to deliver a beautiful deck in collaboration with a market leader USPCC, as well as easier, more streamlined, fulfilment for backers across the world, especially those in the United States.
Valerio is the creative mind behind this project. He studies architecture and loves to experiment with new design ideas and produce beautiful things.
Antonios has helped bring the project together with various bits here and there. He studies economics and politics, but loves to tinker with design ideas, most notably with iOS apps.
When sending messages or posting comments, either one of us may reply and we will let you know who is replying. If you have a specific question directed at Valerio or Antonios just say so in your message and that person will get back to you as soon as possible :)
A big thanks to the members of the 'United Cardists' Forum who have provided support and crucial feedback to get this project to where it is today!
For Bloggers and Other Media
This deck cannot succeed without your support and spreading the word across the internet. We’d like to make that easier for everyone by preparing a ‘press kit’ that contains a summary of this deck as well as some images which you may include in your articles and sites. We hope that this will make interesting reading for your followers and together we can help this become a reality!
If you require additional material please get in touch.
Risks and challenges
As stated above, the design is complete.
We've worked out all the details with the United States Printing Card Company (USPCC) and provided we reach the funding target they are excited about doing the printing for us.
If this project is successfully funded, we foresee very few challenges from the production perspective. The printing will take just over a month, should any delays occur we will of course keep you all posted. We are in regular contact with USPCC to ensure we get the highest quality product possible as quickly as possible.
The fulfilment will be carried out in one of two ways depending on where you are located.
For our friends in the Americas, fulfilment will be done by 'Kings Wild Fullfillment' (Jackson Robinson), the incredibly talented artist behind Federal 52, Sherlock Holmes and The Independence decks. Without any doubt the most famous card decks on Kickstarter. His company provides the highest quality in playing cards packaging and has a great deal of experience as well as an excellent track-record in delivering Kickstarter rewards. It's great to have Jackson on board, your decks will be in safe hands. :)
For the rest of the world, packaging will be done in-house to ensure the decks are dispatched quickly and in a way that prevents damage in transit. Valerio is most likely going to take care of this side of things. We aim to get the orders out as soon as they delivered to us. You should be able to enjoy your playing cards in October at the latest!
There will be frequent updates so that you know exactly where you cards and rewards are and when you can expect to receive them.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
