FULLY FUNDED IN *70 HOURS*!
OVER 800+ BACKERS!
COMING TO NINTENDO SWITCH!
THANK YOU SO MUCH <3
Stretch goals are bonuses and extra content that we can give to our backers if the funding goal is reached. Here is a description of the what goals we have in mind:
[UNLOCKED] $7,000: Super Chompy Adventure! - Chompy gets his very own game! Tasked with finding the legendary Chomp of Destiny, join his epicly chomporific quest as he... chomps things. A lot. This mini-adventure will be released completely free!
[UNLOCKED] $8,000: Renaine on Switch! - Getting Renaine on the Switch is a dream, but an expensive one. We will need to buy a dev kit and potentially look at finding some outside help for the porting. We use OpenFL which works with OpenGL, making the transition to Switch a lot easier, but we will still need to get approved by Nintendo and the like-- which isn't always a guarantee.
[UNLOCKED] $9,000: Online Expanded! - Online already works in Renaine, with a basic race mode, but this extra money would help us pay for art and music to support additional modes to have a good time.
[UNLOCKED] $10,000: An Additional Character! - A second character will be available, separate from Aine, that will have their own movement and abilities. Our idea for this character is really cool, no spoilers, but it’s something we’ve been wanting to do for a long time!
[UNLOCKED] $13,000: Boss Rush + New Boss! - We're breaking the limits with this on. Put your skills to test in the ultimate challenge-- a boss rush! Battle every boss and a brand new foe in this extra mode.
[UNLOCKED] $15,000: New Level! - Brave the darkest depths of the legendary Wingfall Manor to uncover new secrets! Featuring a unique Metroidvania-inspired design, this level will be a particular treat for those interested in diving deeper into the lore of Renaine!
[UNLOCKED] $16,000: Orchestral Arrangement - We will be bring the Renaine OST to the scoring stage. The final boss sequence will be recorded with a Full Studio Orchestra in Budapest!
[UNLOCKED] $18,000 - The Renaine OST expands! The added budget will go straight to the sourcing of additional guest artists, players, and producing more music, including Made in Abyss's Kevin Penkin!
$20,000 - Unleash the Phoenix Knight! - Aine will get many more attacks to her repertoire, giving you more tools to express yourself in several different ways. Renaine's movement is critical to the experience, and this tier will let us expand it even farther. We'll also include relevant emblems to further customize your abilities.
$30,000 - Animated Intro - The game gets its very own animated intro. This will be a action-packed 30 seconds where Aine flies through movement as an amazing new song plays courtesy of our very own Mason Lieberman, and whoever he decides to pull along from his litany of anime music friends. It'll be fast, it'll be intense, and it'll be very Renaine.
Renaine is a game about overcoming failure.
Aine, the Phoenix Knight, is blessed with the ability to revive endlessly, but cursed with the impossible task of defeating the dreaded Dragon to avenge her fallen friend, Ren. The quest to the legendary Dragon’s Lair will bring Aine all across the colorful kingdom of Lineria as she tries, and tries again through evolving levels that test her ability to learn from her mistakes. Are you up to the challenge?
[Linux/Mac Demo Coming Soon]
Renaine is Octosoft's vision of the perfect platformer, with the grooviest tunes, immaculate art, and ever-changing challenges.
Hop, bop, and roll are the three basic abilities Aine starts any run with. Jump over obstacles. Slash with your sword. Roll to quickly avoid attacks. And that's the basics of it. That's it. The entire game can be finished with just those three basic moves. The gameplay of Renaine is all about getting better. Aine is an experienced knight at the start of her quest, but she's not invincible - and failure is part of this game! Due to the Dragon's Curse, the kingdom of Lineria is distorted each time Aine revives. In other words, the level-layout changes every time you die, leaving hundreds of new challenges for you to overcome. Use features like different emblem loadouts and level replays to repeat a challenging setup as many times as you like.
Along the way, you'll come across Lineria’s towns full of colorful characters that need help. Complete quests and they'll reward you with new abilities and secrets. Since time does not reset when Aine revives, these quests and their rewards are persistent. The items you gain, though, are not. You will never get permanent upgrades in this game. You will, however, permanently unlock new options to use, like emblems, heart containers, npc shops, and more - many of which completely change how this game runs!
Renaine's design strikes a balance between two kinds of players - completionists, and speedrunners. It is a challenging game, but not impossible, and is meant to deliver that satisfying “just right” challenge. Additional end game content stretches your platforming limits, however, with challenge rooms and additional completionist emblems that will take you the extra mile to finish.
Aine - A bookish knight of Lineria, and now the embodiment of the legendary Phoenix Knight. Aine’s bravery does not come from her pride, but instead from her sense of duty. Her failure to defeat the Dragon has instilled within her a strong drive to correct her mistakes. Unlike most knights, her specialty does not lay in her raw strength but her striking speed and ability to adapt to new situations.
The Dragon - A hostile dragon that lies on the top of Eastwest Mountain, she is an unstoppable, vicious foe. To any who challenge her, she is the ultimate obstacle.
The Dragon Knight - The emissary who lays in the Dragon's shadow, they are the dark watcher that roams Lineria. Once thought to be a brave warrior, they were corrupted and forced into eternal servitude. A formidable foe, Aine's prior squabble with the Dragon has tasked them to stop her from ever returning.
Mr. Octopus - A helpful octopus that sells the best of goods, Mr. Octopus has found his niche selling to exclusive clientele on dangerous adventures. He seems to find himself in every town Aine visits...just how does he do it?
Chompy - It's Chompy! He chomps things, a knight's best friend.
We really love talking about our own stuff, but what we love even more is when other people talk about our stuff! Instead of babbling on about how all of Renaine's crazy pixel rules, we want to share what some other artists think of the Renaine:
"Renaine's art style, originally coined by Squidly, pioneered by Carrion, and now persevered by Sinclair Strange, intrigued me from the first time I saw it, back when Squidly was doing all the art. After Carrion got involved and transformed the art style into what it is today I fell in love with it. Right off the bat Renaine's art was something different, something I hadn't seen before in the way it used colors and presented itself, and Carrion's transformations had made it into something astounding, a loveable style that's easily recognizable and differs itself from that of other games in its genre while still looking incredibly visually appealing. Sinclaire Strange is holding the style high and strong right now, and this fantastic aesthetic paired with the incredible gameplay make me heavily excited for Renaine! " -Transient
"I'm super excited to play Renaine! I've been following the game for about 2 months now, and seeing it's developments up to this point look very promising. It uses the most unique style of pixel art I've ever seen in a pixel art game, with effective textures and high focus on style rather than detail - which really makes the scenery pop in such an attractive fashion. Animator and sprite artist, Gourami, has shared many his top-notch animations that will be present with the main character of the game. What makes this game seem even more promising is the honesty and transparency of the developers. They have a great sense of humor, interact with their base, and really care about their followers. Renaine will be an amazzling game delivered by amazzling people c: " -Fleja
"I never thought the low-bit style would ever make an appearance again. I’ve seen plenty of great indie pixel art games, and this is no exception. From Renaine’s first demo to Renaine now, it has become something extravagant. It looks like Aine just pulled a “Sailor Moon” transformation and is now on a whole new level of art! It has stepped out of the 1-bit style and became its own thing, with plenty of rules on how the art can be made. It’s fascinating how they have thought outside of the box and created their very own art style that both artist and players can enjoy looking at on days on end. The characters are all adorable, each one can be looked at, and the second you see them, you can tell how that character behaves, portraying characteristics by only a walk and idle animation is just outstanding. I can say I will gladly give the artists and the team every cent I can so they can continue this project, and I hope you can too! , and I hope you can too! " -Danky
Great games revolve around great music. Renaine’s tracks are a fresh approach to the catchy chiptunes of classic gaming, and it’s with incredible excitement we announce Mason Lieberman as our composer for the soundtrack to Renaine! Mason is without a doubt one of the most talented musicians around, producing music for shows such as RWBY and Beyblade Burst Evolution. He’s even contributed to music for Nintendo, Namco Bandai, and Riot Games!
To provide dynamic, vibrant music, we're proud to say the entire soundtrack is being recorded live by some truly special musicians. Each level has an Act 1 and Act 2 track. Act 1’s track is the base, a strong/catchy tune that sets the scene. Act 2, however, is a remixed arrangement featuring vocals that make each song shine. To deliver this sound to its full potential, we've teamed-up with some of the best recording artists around to participate in our creative journey, and the results really speak for themselves.
Trevor Alan Gomes/88bitmusic - Trevor is an award-winning pianist, arranger, and composer whose work is absolute without peer. As a pianist, he is most known for his epic re-arrangements of the entire Pokemon Red/Blue soundtrack for solo and duo piano. He is additionally producing solo piano albums in collaboration with fellow indie title Celeste, and Video Games Live! His Twitch Partner stream, www.twitch.tv/88bitmusic, is highly respected within the Twitch music community as “the place to be”. He is currently a competitor on Twitch's premiere game show, Stream On!
Trevor has produced some truly incredible work, reinterpreting the main theme in his powerfully-unique style. We are thrilled to have him aboard!
Tournament Arc - Tournament Arc is a re-arrangement band dedicated to the music of gaming and anime, respectively. Filled to the brim with industry professionals in both fields, Tournament Arc is most known for their virtuosic re-harmonizations of classic gaming tunes. As current artists on the Materia Collective label, we are thrilled to work with Tournament Arc on this soundtrack. You’ll be hearing them right in this demo, with their relaxing take on our Forest act 1 theme, “Make Way for Me”!
Their membership is composed of:

- David Gibson McLean - Drums (Percussion and guitar for a wide range of titles, including the Beyblade franchise.)

Edo Bushido (Substantial, Asheru, DJ AArock)
Edo Bushido is the lovechild of three D.C. area MCs with phenomenal impact. Each uniquely touched by anime, their sound is anything but ordinary.
Substantial stands as a pivotal figure in the mythos of the late legendary Japanese producer Nujabes, as an artist sought out directly to be produced. A long and illustrious career has followed, with work ranging from collaborations with Bootsy Collins, Marcus D, and Gene Simmons of KISS, to experiences with companies like Amazon, Uber, and Bentley Motors.
Asheru is a hip-hop artist, educator, and activist most widely known for his brilliant theme to The Boondocks television show. He stands as the first rapper to win the prestigious Peabody award for journalism, for his contributions to The Boondocks. His collaborations and performances have included world-class artists like Mos Def, Common Jill Scott, Bilal, The Roots, and DJ Jazzy Jeff.
DJ AArock is a multi-talented DJ, producer, and all-around renaissance man with publishings as a recording artist, DJ, and even as a comic artist and writer! A known master of East/West fusion, his work has spanned J, K, and A(merican) pop music! Collaborated artists include Jay Park, Aziatics, Shing02, Random, Luis Logic, and many, many more.
With the multicultural fusion aesthetic of Eastwest Mountain, we knew we would need a remix from an artist with a unique grasp on both Eastern and Western musical culture. We are thrilled to announce that Edo Bushido has produced the incredible “One Way or Another”, serving as act two of Eastwest Mountain.
These are not the only collaborators involved in this soundtrack. In fact, we've confirmed quite a few other artists that we can't wait to announce! We're thrilled to offer a selection of our tracks right here for you to check the music out!
Squidly is the lead programmer and head behind Renaine, with all those squid arms when it comes to crunch time this guy can bang out all you need and more. Maybe we should buy him some extra mice and keyboards.
His Excellency™, Mason Lieberman is a musical mastermind who has produced work for Beyblade, RWBY, League of Legends, and other things. He's apparently good at cello too or something.
Gourami is the character artist/animator for Renaine. Also, he's a fish. We don't really understand how he can use a computer or even understand language, but we've learned not to question it.
Ayaka was once a regular denizen of her small little island, but that was before the Kraken attacked. Now a grizzled Kraken hunter, she pays for her sea voyages by selling her pixel art and posters.
Joel is the tileset and environmental artist for Renaine, if the beautiful environments and sceneries behind Renaine don't captivate you alone, perhaps try it again with a nice Cup of Joel.
Soph floats around space yelling to folks about her favorite things and helping her friends. No one really knows where she comes from, or what she's hiding under her bangs, but she seems friendly enough.
Risks and challenges
Renaine is the game of failure, getting better and trying again. Renaine is a game of never giving up. And so is our team.
On September 23, 2017, we launched our first Kickstarter. Things didn’t go that smoothly, and we failed. Since then, we’ve been growing and getting better, learning from our past experiences. We got a grant, and with the grant, we recruited new members. We were also able to rework a bunch of the art, commission some awesome animations, and collaborate with crazy-talented musicians to create a truly amazing game for you all. We’re learning from our failures, and we’re getting better and better. And now we’re trying again: to get the little financial push we need to deliver the best game we possibly can.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
