The World of the Tactical Alien Defense Role-Playing Game
Imagine a future where mankind is in constant conflict with itself and has been subdued into a totalitarian economic landscape that allows a handful of massive multi-national companies to dominate every aspect of human life. One might in fact argue there is already little left to imagination as far as that vision goes.
But as we speak, there are even more sinister forces at work on planet Earth—and beyond. As of late, our world has become a hotspot for hostile alien visitation. There's an impressive assortment of curious, cruel, and voracious creatures descending on a world already ravaged by one of the most treacherous and violent species in the Universe: Us!
In order to meet this new threat, Earth’s industrialized governments finally approve the inception of a strong and independent clandestine organization: OMEGA. Authorized to secretly operate in all parts of the world, OMEGA is the only entity on Earth with the capability to counter the alien threat.
When engaged in a game of CONTACT, you take on the roles of dedicated OMEGA operatives. Player characters may be human soldiers, agents, engineers or scientists, with detailed background stories and lots of personal quirks, traits, and ambitions. Naturally, there is also the possibility of playing more exotic characters, such as cyborgs, advanced Artificial Intelligences, or even the occasional alien ally. Your duty is to stand firm between a menacing UFO armada and the survival of mankind, fulfilling your mission by any means necessary, yet no one can even know you exist.
At the core of the system: Contact Kore
CONTACT features a set of proprietary game mechanics that were developed with this exact type of role-playing game in mind, called Contact Kore. It comes with point-based action and a percentile task resolution system that, while not reinventing the wheel, was specifically designed to open up a great deal of ways to play, making the numerous small-unit battles that are likely to happen both fun and engaging on a long term.
We intended CONTACT's mechanical core, its "engine", so to speak, to be fairly detailed, yet easily comprehensible, and also boast a certain amount of real-life authenticity, while still encouraging the use of common sense in situations where precise rules remain unwritten or simply cannot be applied. Although offering many practical solutions that could work equally well in any other type of setting, Contact Kore’s terminology for more in-depth rules blends best with a selection of near future/science fiction settings, such as the alien invasion scenario of CONTACT.
Said in-depth game mechanics, such as advanced combat tactics and social interaction, are handled in a modular fashion so that the game can be kept to a minimum amount of complexity for first-time players and casual gamers. Advanced players, on the other hand, are going to enjoy the added crunch and flavor of comprehensive strategy and simulation elements, such as research and development and base management.

In the roughly 30 days the project is running, we hope to not only reach the basic funding goal for printing the core rulebook of the game, but also some of our stretch goals. Below, you can see what we had in mind, exactly.
With each stretch goal reached, the blast door will lower itself further in order to reveal more advanced stretch goals.

As the Kickstarter campaign goes on, we hope to reach a number of stretch goals that will unlock various add-ons to the project. At the moment, this space is still as barren and lifeless as the surface of the moon (or is it?). Hopefully, you will soon be able to choose from a growing number of items that you can, well, 'add-on' to your pledge.
Think of them as accessories to the high-powered plasma weapon that is the core rulebook.
Clockwork Publishing is a German RPG publisher that is actually called Uhrwerk Verlag. But due to international customers having problems pronouncing the original name, we chose Clockwork Publishing (a literal translation of Uhrwerk Verlag) as our international label. We have been producing RPG products in German since 2009, from translated products (e.g. Hollow Earth Expedition, Deadlands, The One Ring, FATE Core) over genuine German games (besides Contact for example Splittermond, Dungeonslayers, DSA Myranor) to a mixture of both (the relaunch of Space:1889 using the Ubiquity rules). So far we have published over 100 RPG products in German. Additionally we brought the new German edition of Space:1889 back to the English market via a Kickstarter project in 2013. We hit some obstacles on the way, but also learned a lot from this experience - lessons that should help us in this Kickstarter project.

Shipping is always somewhat difficult to calculate in advance. We added three levels of shipping cost to the various reward levels - for the EU, the USA, and the rest of the world. While doing so, we are attempting to keep the costs as reasonable as possible. Especially the rest of the world shipment costs are quite high. Unfortunately, there is no viable solution to ship into these areas at a lower cost at this moment in time and space.

Please also be aware that shipment includes a single shipment. If you order any add-ons, the core rulebook will not be shipped before those add-ons are ready to be delivered. If you want more than one shipment to get everything as soon as it is finished, just add additional shipments to your pledge (each shipment costs the same).
Risks and challenges
Our Company has been publishing tabletop role-playing games in Germany since 2009. We are currently releasing about 2-4 new printed products every month for our various lines.
Our science fiction role-playing game 'CONTACT' was first published for the German-speaking market by mid-2012 and has since flourished into an ongoing line. At this point in time, the following published products already exist in the CONTACT line: The Core Rulebook, four standalone adventure books, two sourcebooks, a Game Master Screen and an instrumental concept CD album. This means the work at hand is largely translation work in the foreseeable future, which also allows us to come up with entirely new and exciting stuff simultaneously - stuff that will reach the translators earlier thanks to this lucky circumstance.
Here's another piece of good news: The PDF version of the English-language versions of the Core Rulebook as well as the Game Master Screen (whoops, we sure blurted that one out by accident...) are already fully done, ready to be sent off to the printer right after the Kickstarter campaign has been successfully concluded.
We have run a couple of funded crowdfunding campaigns in the past, both in German and English, and have learnt from past problems when they have arisen, especially concerning fulfillment and communication. Today, we are positive that we are prepared to avoid these problems with CONTACT and hope to get the book and any funded supplements out well within the proposed timeframe.
Still, any crowdfunding project can run into problems if any of the people involved like translators, layouter and so on (who mostly don't work on this full-time) can't keep their deadlines. We are prepared to monitor every step closely to minimize the chance of dealays due to freelancers needing more time. Naturally, we will also try to keep the backers up to date on any problems that might arise during fulfillment - a major lesson learned from past crowdfundings).
The project will not interfere with other work we are completing since most of it is done by freelancers that don't work on our other gaming lines (e.g. the people working on Contact and the people working on Space:1889 are different teams).Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
