Why this book right now:
When we take our kids to the library or bookstore, we see an ocean of children's books which assume a heteronormative family structure. In recent years, we have seen a small but vital stream of books emerge which reflect more diverse families. But we need more!
This project grew out of direct experience with needing to answer childrens’ questions about their own origins and those of their friends. This book offers some unique features...
1. Gender-neutral discussion of biology (For example, "Some bodies make teeny tiny sperm, and some bodies make teeny tiny eggs...")
2. Visual representations (Gives kids an illustrated understanding of concepts like sperm/egg donation, surrogacy, adoption, divorce, fostering, etc.)
3. Focus on storytelling (On a hand-painted rainbow of pages, readers are introduced to children with diverse family structures through simple stories about daily life. Young readers can easily relate to topics like sand castles, halloween costumes, and making breakfast!
When people in power are stoking the flames of intolerance, there is no better time for us to stand up and embrace diversity. Lets get another great book out into the world!
About This Book:
This book has lots of simple stories about normal life in all sorts of families. These stories show small daily acts of loving connection between parents and children. It is this loving connection which builds families, regardless of biology. In the back of the book is a glossary, which defines of some of the terms in the book. These words and phrases will be in bold letters.
Be a genetic detective! This book is full of pictures of different children and their parents. Each child gets their features from the people who gave the sperm and egg to create them. Look carefully at each child’s mouth, nose, eyes, hair, and face shape. You can trace which features came from which adult.
Our book recognizes and honors any adult who was biologically involved in conceiving the child, even if they don’t actively parent that child. In addition to all parents, each family page includes a small picture of any such adult in the family.
This stuff is complicated! It would be impossible to show examples of every family structure. This book seeks to broaden children’s experience with diverse families, but your kids are counting on you to keep answering their questions and filling in the blanks. Use this book as a chance to be open and honest with kids about where they came from, and to honor all sorts of loving families.
Our background, very briefly:
Hello! We are Serena Torrey and Meguey Baker, and we are working together to bring this book to life. We are sisters and friends, and we are also both mothers. When Serena's children were born with the help of a sperm donor, she wrote this book for them. Meguey read it to her youngest child to help explain how Serena's family came to be. Now we are excited to bring The Flexible Facts of Life to more families!
Serena Torrey, MSW, LCSW, is a parent, carpenter, and a practicing psychotherapist in the hill-towns of Massachusetts.
Meguey Baker is a parent, historian, and a certified sex education teacher in the slightly more urban towns of Massachusetts.
We grew up with the great good fortune to have a mother who not only encouraged us to ask questions about any topic that we were curious about, but did her very best to answer them, even when they were challenging. Between us we have five children, and we write books for which we see a need and that we want our own kids to read. Children want very much to trust the adults around them to answer their questions. We hope The Flexible Facts of Life helps adults to answer some of the challenging ones with confidence. Happy reading!
Risks and challenges
While this is Serena's first foray into publishing a book, Meguey has been publishing books for a decade, including several successful Kickstarters. We feel very confident in our ability to deliver a high-quality book in a timely fashion. The book is complete. We have proofs from the printer. We are ready to put in an order for the first print run of The Flexible Facts of Life! Thanks for all your help and support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
