Today we'r excited to release the revised version 1.3 of Raspiboy !
Raspiboy was launched last year on Kickstarter. Since we have done some improvements, especially :
- Battery management system
- Gamepad sensitivity
- And for the revision release here's a clear purple case limited edition :)
We'll come back to that at the end, but first for those who don't know yet Raspiboy :
What is Raspiboy ?
RaspiBoy is a handheld emulation console kit based on raspberry pi zero.
The idea came when I saw on internet projects of "GameBoyZero", awesome raspberry pi based consoles. I was amazed, but it looked pretty difficult to build one, it was a 3 months work and over 100€ for all components! And last, you need an old gameboy to rip open.
RaspiBoy is conceived such that everything fits together perfectly and the build is a 5 minutes task without soldering!
The RaspiBoy comes as a kit, with easy assembly tutorial video. Don't worry ! It's super easy and we will guide you step by step. It's very much like a puzzle ! Moreover I hope you will find the tutorial interesting as there will be lot of interesting facts on product design, PCB design, prototyping and so on!
(Why a kit? Because we simply cannot include the raspberry pi zero (5€) as it is only sold 1 raspberry pi zero max per customer.)
And isn't it cool to be able to say that you made your own handheld game station ? ;)
But wait! You are saying that we can play any game of our childhood, what does it mean exactly? Does the kit comes with games integrated?
I do not supply any software or game, there are several emulation station softwares that you can install (super easy installation, it will be explained step-by-step in the tutorial!), for example Retropie or RecalBox. You can check them on Youtube for demo !
Those softwares come with a wide range of systems supported : Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Super Nintendo, Megadrive (Genesis), Atari, MaMe and so on. You can have a look here to all the supported systems.
To install a game you need it's ROM file. A ROM file is a computer file containing all the game data. You can legally download ROM of any unlicensed games on the internet.
Then to install the ROM you just have to put the ROM file on a USB-key and plug it into the RaspiBoy. That's it ! (copy and installation is automatic!)
We tried to add as much nice features as possible in this RaspiBoy! Here is an overview :
TV output : you can connect RaspiBoy to your big TV with the mini-HDMI connector and video automatically switch from RaspiBoy to your TV!
Up to 4 players : you can connect USB gamepads on RaspiBoy! (3 players with basic kit and 4 players with extra-usb kit, see below)
- Speaker + headphone jack + Thumbwheel potentiometer to tune volume
- 4 LED for battery status
And what does the RaspiBoy kit include exactly?
Everything you need to build your game console but the Raspberry Pi Zero!
We have 2 kits : the "Basic Kit" and the "Fully Loaded Kit". Both of them include the default components :
- The RaspiBoy designed plastic casing
Available in 2 colors : Grey or clear purple Kickstarter Limited Edition. You'll have to choose at the end of Kickstarter.
3.5" LCD screen to display the composite signal of pi zero
- Game controller board and buttons
8BCraft revised electronic board. V1.3
Then the battery, memory size and option change depend on kit :
- Default components (see below)
- 8GB memory card, which is enought for thousands of your games !
3000mAh 3.7V Lithium battery (about 4.5 hours of battery life)
Fully loaded kit
- Default components (see below)
- 32GB memory card, which is enought for even more of your games !
- 6000mAh 3.7V Lithium battery (about 9 hours of battery life)
EXTRA USB KIT : The original kit only have 2 external USB (not enough room on the electronic board!), so 3 players maximum. With this kit you can add one extra USB connector to your RaspiBoy to play up to 4 players. This part require soldering!
- 3 USB gamepads
*** Again please note that the Raspberry Pi zero is not included in any kits. It is very cheap, only 5$, and we will give you instruction how to get yours. We can't include it in the kit because it is only sold 1 raspberry pi zero per customer/order and we can't get any supply of it !***
Kickstarter limited edition!
Raspiboy is now available in 2 colors : Grey or clear purple Kickstarter Limited Edition !
You'll have to choose the color at the end of Kickstarter.
Limited edition will be CLEAR PURPLE color.
This limited edition will be available only on Kickstarter, so don't miss it ;)
Upgrade from 8GB to 16GB for free!
Basic Raspiboy kit comes with 8GB SD card, which can already hold hundreds of games.
Upgrade from 8GB to 16GB memory for FREE by sharing Raspiboy kickstarter on facebook!
Copy the URL of your facebook post and save it for later. At the end of the Kickstarter I will send you a survey to ask you about shipping details and color, there you will be able to put your URL to get the free memory card upgrade!
If you'r going for the fully loaded kit if you can share just because you like the project it's aweome! :)
What is new with revised version v1.3 ?
We have improved a lot of things since our first Kickstarter!
The main improvement is definitly the charge system, with the first revised v1.2 we enabled the possibility to play and charge at the same time. But the charge with the new system was very long because of excessive heating. In order to solve this issue we added 2 internal copper layers in the PCB that act as heatsink, draining the heat from the charger chip. Thus the charge cycle is improved and is almost twice faster! Full charge is now 4-5 hours while it was about 8-12 hours with the v1.2 of the PCB.
The second improvement we have made is to replace the gamepad PCB that had a lot of sensitivity issues, we are now using one which react way better.
Then there are a lot of small changes that helps improving the reliability of the system and reduce the defect rate.
More than a gadget, a journey
Joining me on kickstarter is not only about getting a nice game console. It's also about the journey of the project! As you can check on my two first Kickstarter campaigns Raspiboy and RetroStone, I made a point to give good updates (check for yourself HERE). With interesting facts on production.
Here are exemples of what people thought of them!
Also Raspiboy already have a lot of reviews that you can check HERE
Raspiboy is a KIT please be aware of that!
If you are looking for an assembled product then you'r not looking for Raspiboy! Please note that electronic is delicate, might broke while assembly and sometime even be frustrating if assembly is not done correctly.
If you don't feel up to the task then you might be interested in RetroStone (check here!) that we just launched on Kickstarter earlier this year! RetroStone is an assembled handheld.
Retrostone similar with Raspiboy. There are few differences though :
- Raspiboy use a raspberry pi zero, so you can use the official Retropie or Recalbox. Whereas RetroStone use a H3 processor which run Retrorangepi, a Retropie build for Armbian (which is definitly awesome too), but so far Recalbox is not supported on H3.
- RetroStone is 135€ where Raspiboy starts at 75€ (even 65€ on the Kickstarter!)
- RetroStone has an easy memory card access
RetroStone is up for pre-order on my website HERE
(PS: Raspiboy orders on the website are v1.2)
Why getting a Raspiboy? It can be :
- For yourself and to have some good fun with friends.
- To make a gift to a special someone.
- To discover the world of hackerspaces, fablabs and raspberry pi with a nice project. We made the tuto very clear and with lot of interresting facts!
- To build an arcade station for your kids and impress them with a cool gift they won't forget !
The Raspiboy comes as a kit and it's a good opportunity to learn a lot. And that's for me the most important feature!! I think a lot of people are afraid of electronic DIY.
With this kit, you don't need to be an expert or to have a solder iron. If you ever wanted to discover the world of DIY, fablab, hackerspace and so on, this is a good start!
Indeed we want this kit to be very instructive on different subjects:
- Product design: how to think your product
- 3D design
- Prototyping: electronic prototyping, 3D printing
- Indeed we want this kit to be very instructive on different subjects: Electronics design : from idea to prototype
End of July 2018 : End of Kickstarter
August 2018 : Production
September 2018 : Testing and preparing kits
End of septembre 2018 : Shipping to you guys
As this is the revised version for Raspiboy there are lot of things that will be easier and faster. For exemple to injection mold is already ready. Suppliers are already selected and tested. So everything should be smooth! :)
Risks and challenges
Raspiboy already became a reality thanks to kickstarter backers last year! Which means that everything is ready to start the production of the revised version, all we need now is to get enought backers to start a production!
Back us now and help us reach our fundraising goal so that we can launch the production! :)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
