“There is so much more to flourishing as human beings beyond simply not feeling pain.” -Lisa Evers
This healing work is for ALL of us, shared through the eyes of a truth-seeker, RN and innovative problem-solver. I have struggled with feelings for much of my life, and in my professional practice see similar challenges in nearly all patients seeking healthcare. Why is there SO much focus on PAIN? What has caused the opioid crisis? Why has it become the “norm” for us to stuff our true feelings, instead of listening to the gentle whispers echoing in our bodies each day?
Tired of waiting for answers from the experts, I started trusting my instincts and began asking the pain question differently… “How Comfortable do you feel today”? Wow, what a difference! Patients would say, “No one has asked me that before- sure feels better than focusing on pain all the time.” With a simple shift of perspective, we are no longer planting the seeds of pain as the expectation, but the possibility of COMFORT, instead. This is the line of inquiry upon which this new tracking tool and healing manuscript was conceived.
What began as a vision of simply flipping the current pain scale, has become a well-researched Masters level exploration which includes a Pilot Study of 22 participants. I dove into our current opioid crisis engaging both hemispheres of my brain to more understand this challenging puzzle and propose fresh solutions. I offer this transformative new lens through which to guide our recovery using “Comfort Quest” as our supportive, new scale. Ultimately, it’s NOT about denying or repressing the pain/ feelings, but finally unearthing potential root causes (whether body, mind, or spirit) and healing at each level.
Attempting to numb our pain is yielding tragic results in society today- Pain continues, Addiction rages, and People are dying! My hypothesis is that the current pain scale is fueling the opioid crisis. Pain is viewed as the enemy, with the single goal of silencing it, at any cost. By flipping the pain scale, I am offering a new Vision- "Comfort Quest" where valuable energy is focused on real solutions- uncovering root causes, understanding pain's messages, and empowering the body to heal.
In this work, I explore current allopathic approaches to pain management in Section One (left brain), Analysis to Paralysis, which has focused for decades on reactive Pathogenesis (silencing pain). Realizing that “Problems cannot be solved with the same mindset that created them”, I offer Salutogenesis as a proactive theory in which physical, mental, and social well-being are cultivated. Neuroscience, quantum physics, energy medicine and positive psychology all support this transformative, new vision.
In Section Two (right brain), Our Heroine’s Journey, I embrace my intuition and offer feminine wisdom as a healing potion for addiction today. An adventure of nine chapters unfolds in which the rejected feminine (feeling) endures various trials, the illusion of success, dark descent, and eventual reintegration with the masculine (with heart). It is through the union of the complementary nature of the healthy masculine and feminine that the goals of authentic wholeness and well-being are achieved.
Pain is finally embraced as an intense and complex messenger- the rejected feminine which is still seeking to be heard and respected. I offer this transformative new lens “Comfort Quest” through which to empower our body-mind-spirit, learn our valuable lessons and embrace wholeness as we release our hidden blocks to vitality, both as individuals and society.
