Cubee is the first and only photo cube frame specifically designed to display your printed Instagram and mobile device photographs. The Cubee unit combined with our interactive ordering system allows you to take 5 of your favorite photos and customize your own unique, portable table light. It makes the perfect personalized gift ...or keep it for yourself! Whoever Cubee is intended for, they'll be sure to enjoy and love.
How Cubee Works
We spent many months developing a beautiful website for you to customize and order your Cubee light. It's very easy to use. We added some special features to make the process as fun as it is efficient. Here's how it works:
Step 1: Connect
You connect to your Instagram account through the Cubee website and selects 5 of your favorite photos (you can also upload photos directly from your mobile device or computer - coming soon).
Step 2: Preview
Once you have your photos selected, you then can customize and preview your new Cubee using the website's 3D cube simulator.
Step 3: Order
All satisfied? Just check out and the order is sent to the Cubee team. The photos are printed on KODAK Universal Backlit Film, placed into the device and shipped ready to enjoy.
You can see how it works yourself by making a test Cubee for FREE on our website: www.hellocubee.com OR just click on any of the photos on this page :)
The photos are interchangeable so there is no limit to how many you can collect to customize.
A single 12mm LED light illuminates Cubee with a nice uniform glow.
The device itself is rechargeable from any USB port and has a continuous light time of approximately 8 hours per 90 minute charge.

The inventor and CEO of the startup, Justin Anthony Lemus says he came up with the idea while visiting his childhood home, noticing an old 1970’s acrylic photo cube.
“The original acrylic photo cube was able to take 5 or 6 flat pictures and turn them into something you couldn’ t help but want to pick up, touch and look at. I wanted to recreate that feeling with Cubee. By adding some of today's technology to the simplistic design of that classic cube, we were able to develop a more functional version that's not only fun, but also a tangible way to display your Instagram photos."
- Justin Anthony Lemus
We started with figuring out the perfect size, settling on a 3.25” cube design. Slightly smaller than the original 1970’s cube, our new size easily fits in one hand and won't overwhelm the space you have it displayed on. This size also allows for all 5 photos to be printed on a standard 8.5 x 11" paper scale (single sheet). This opens up possibilities for a "print-at-home” version in the future.
Next was figuring out the best way to illuminate and power Cubee. We tested dozens of lights and batteries. Configuring the inner components was also difficult with very little space to work, all while being careful to not have anything in front of where the light needed to shine (causing inner shadows). We settled on a re-chargeable Lithium battery, saving space and adding a 8-hour light time per 90 minute charge. For the light source we went with a single 12mm Warm White LED. The 3400K color temperature adds ambiance without being distracting. And with a 360º viewing angle, it allows Cubee its uniform glow.
Our background in large format printing came into play when deciding what the best material to use for the photos would be. The KODAK Universal Backlit Film is the same material we use when printing professional backlit posters. Unlike photo paper, this material doesn't contain any paper fibers so there is no dark or "blotchy" spots when light is shined through. You get an even translucent glow every time.
From the beginning, we knew we wanted to somehow incorporate Instagram and photos you take with your cell phone. We designed our website with Instagram API, making it easy to transfer those photos and customize your Cubee. Don't want to use Instagram? No problem! We are currently finishing up development on being able to upload photos directly from your phone or computer. As an added feature, we designed a 3D cube simulator into the website allowing you to preview what your Cubee will look like before you purchase. It's really fun! You can try it out here.
Pledges & Rewards
By making a pledge to the Cubee project you are not only getting a really cool table light, but also helping to get our small company off the ground. We worked night and day this past year to develop a product and website that we are very proud of. We hope that you will like it as much as we do :)
Support pledges start at $15. As a reward you will receive a personalized "thank you" card and a special edition Cubee lapel pin. This pin will be made exclusively for our Kickstarter backers. It's high quality hard enamel and measures .75 inches. This is a cool pin!
Product pledges start at $30 ($25 for 'Early Bird' pledges). As a reward you will receive 1 Cubee light, 1 USB charging cord, and 5 personalized backlit prints (1 set). You can get additional photo sets by adding $5 to any pledge tier.
Pledges with 2 Cubees or more will receive these nice plastic gift boxes along with their rewards. Remember, the holidays are just around the corner. Knock a few names off your list early!
Launch of our campaign! Lasting 35 days and ending on Oct. 20th. We will continue our marketing, updating backers, and answering all questions through its entirety.
We plan on placing our orders for production on October 1st (pending our goal being reached). This will give us a bit of a jumpstart on prepping of production.
The Kickstarter campaign will end on Monday, October 20th. By this time we should have already begun receiving some assembly materials and finishing up with prepping.
All materials will have been received and we will have started production assembly.
The bulk of the rewards will be assembled and started shipping. We will continue production through December, until all Kickstarter rewards are shipped. Also, we will not ship any new orders until all our Kickstarter rewards are fulfilled.

Risks and challenges
When developing any sort of product, be it physical or digital there are some risk and challenges along the way. It gets even more complicated when dealing with both. Fortunately, we have a great team with the skills and experience to finish the job correctly. Here is what we face in the upcoming months:
1. Financial Backing
Without your support, we can't cover the cost of tooling and get a handle on the minimum order quantity we need for the first batch. Only your help gets us there.
2. Tooling Cost
We have made a pretty good start on this and produced some great first samples. To get the tooling refined to produce Cubee at volume it’s going to take more time, money and effort.
This part of the project is about 95% done. Getting funded means we can finish with a full e-commerce site and add some special features to make the ordering experience even better.
Once we reach our funding goal, we'll need to send Cubee’s to all our backers. This will involve shipping from China, assembly in the US, developing each individual photo set, boxing them up and sending them across the world. We have experience in this from our previous ventures, but Cubee is just that much more complex.
We are looking to trickle units out in increasing volumes to test all our processes as we go and iron out any kinks as early as we can. With your support, we can tackle anything that comes our way and get Cubee out into the world.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
