The Field Guide to Human-Centered Design is a new book from IDEO.org, and we need your help to make it happen.

The Field Guide is a fully illustrated introduction to human-centered design, an approach that problem solvers all over the world have used to tackle the challenges of poverty. It's also the evolution of the HCD Toolkit, a fantastic resource that has been purchased or downloaded 141,000 times.

At IDEO.org, we address the world’s toughest problems, and we routinely come up with innovative solutions in sectors like sexual and reproductive health, water and sanitation, and financial opportunity thanks to human-centered design.

But we're only a few dozen people in San Francisco. And though we wish we could solve all of the world's biggest challenges, we know that the only way to get there is to get nonprofits, social enterprises, foundations, social entrepreneurs, and well, everyone really, solving problems like designers.

We’ve built a number of tools to spread and share human-centered design. Design Kit is our online platform which currently has 58,000 members; our online Course for Human-Centered Design has seen 40,000 people register from 148 countries over the past two years; and the HCD Toolkit has been downloaded over 141,000 times.

But there are places that the Internet just doesn’t go. And there are times out in the field, when your best friend is a good book. The Field Guide is just that friend, an ally in design and a key to help design a world without poverty.

The Field Guide includes step-by-step instruction on how to implement over 50 of the design methods that we at IDEO.org use every day. In addition, you’ll understand the key mindsets of human-centered design, read compelling case studies of our process in action, and have all the worksheets and tools you’ll need to put it into practice.

Human-centered design is an amazingly generative process, and one that starts with people and ends with surprising answers tailor-made to suit their needs. We use it to directly learn from the communities we're looking to serve, to rapidly come up with innovative new concepts, to quickly prototype them, and then to make our ideas come to life.

And with the Field Guide we'll be able to get our approach to everyone all over the world. It won't matter if you have an Internet connection because the Field Guide has everything you need to understand the people you're designing for, to have more effective brainstorms, to prototype your ideas, and to ultimately arrive at more creative solutions.

Thanks so much for your support!

Risques et défis

When the Field Guide to Human-Centered Design is fully funded we don't anticipate too many challenges. At IDEO.org we've got the design and editorial talent that we need to produce a great book, as well as a strong publisher with whom we've worked before.

If we do run into any problems, we fully intend to keep our community updated on our progress.
