DESIGN KIT TRAVEL PACK
IDEO.org is a nonprofit design organization on a mission to improve the lives of people living in poverty.
As designers, we believe any problem can be solved with the right mix of empathy, creativity, and experimentation, and we’ve used that recipe countless times over the past six years to design products and services that have reached more than 5 million people—from low-cost solar lanterns in Kenya to teen-friendly health clinics in Nigeria.
Now we want to put our design tools in the hands of problem-solvers everywhere, and we need your help. Building on the success of our Design Kit learning platform, we’re creating the Travel Pack—a brand new set of bite-sized design exercises to help anyone solve big challenges.
WHAT IS IT?
The Design Kit Travel Pack is a deck of 32 cards containing bite-sized design exercises you (or your team) can use to unleash your inner creative genius.
Gathered from our years of experience designing solutions to some of the world’s toughest challenges, the exercises in the Travel Pack are divided into three sections designed to help you get inspired, take creative risks, and test your ideas in the real world, no matter what you’re working on.
You can use these exercises to:
- Gain a deep understanding of the needs and experiences of whoever you're designing for
- Set big, bold goals for your project
- Learn the best way to collaborate with a new team
- Expand your thinking beyond the usual solutions
- Test and iterate on your solution based on real feedback
Last but not least, we’re calling it the Travel Pack because these exercises can be mixed and matched to suit any situation from New York City to Nairobi—whether you’re looking to kick off a team meeting with a dash of collaboration or embark on a month-long design process.
WHY WAS IT CREATED?
We’ve been teaching human-centered design to social good organizations for years, and we’ve heard over and over again how challenging it can be to incorporate the tools of design into day-to-day work. In speaking with our nonprofit partners and the Design Kit community over the past year, it became clear people needed tools and exercises that would fit into their busy lives.
Here is some of what we heard:
“It's difficult to use some of the [current] tools during workshops. I need to lead teams through a 4-6 hour workshop with tools that will generate actionable outcomes.”
“I wish Design Kit had more practical activities for prototyping and to challenge the way people empathise.”
“I wish Design Kit had more examples of how to apply the tools to practical examples. Issues you may run into and how to get past them.”
WHO IS IT FOR?
The Design Kit Travel Pack is for anyone interested in learning, practicing, or experimenting with human-centered design. Whether you are a student, a designer, or work in social impact, you can keep these exercises handy for whenever your projects need a boost of empathy, creativity or experimentation.
WHAT YOUR PLEDGE MEANS
IDEO.org is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that applies design to poverty’s most pressing challenges. In six short years, we have worked across the globe and reached millions of people through the solutions we’ve designed.
Your donation will help bring Design Kit Travel Pack to life, while also supporting IDEO.org to continue improving the lives of people living in poverty by designing things like low-cost solar lanterns, teen-friendly health clinics, a platform to improve refugee services, or a mobile app that helps low-income families afford health insurance.
Risks and challenges
When Design Kit Travel Pack is fully funded we don't anticipate too many challenges. At IDEO.org, we've got the design and editorial talent that we need to produce a great card deck, as well as a strong production house with whom we've worked before.
If we do run into any problems, we promise to keep our community updated on our progress.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
