Day Job is a biannual print publication that explores modern work culture through the personal pursuits and values of people around the world. It is a magazine about good work for its own sake, about earning a living, and about the search for some utility and meaning in the way we spend our day.
At Day Job we are interested in the personal details of everyday working life—the stories, environments, tools, exploits, perks, and pains of doing a job. It's a publication that tries to investigate not just what we do, but why we do it. It's about people and the variety of ways in which work brings all of us together.
Each issue will feature a collection of interviews, profiles, personal essays, and stories from people around the world all tied together under a broad theme. Issue #1 is all about process.
Issue #1—Part of the Process:
We have compiled over 20 pieces for the first issue! It will be coming in at or around 160 pages. Inside you'll find articles about French peasant winemaking, auto mechanics, barbershop owners, the visual history of Excel, Lebanese calligraphy, 100-year-old ladder companies, and much more. It's going to be filled to the brim with interviews and stories and big ideas. Here's a taste of what you're in for:
We've been fortunate to get to collaborate with so many talented writers, photographers, and illustrators, including:
Samantha Casolari, Benjamin Dolson, Yoon Kim, Rob Kulisek, Jonathan Olivares, Timothy Pachirat, Daniel Payne, Kelly Rakowski (Nothing-is-New), Jason Rider, Jungyeon Roh, Kristen Scharold, Johanna Wallin, and many more.
We have spent the last 6 months compiling and editing the content for this first issue. Everything is in and ready to go! We're now in the process of designing the final product and can't wait to get it in to your hands this summer. And that's where you come in. We're raising funds here on Kickstarter primarily to help cover printing and production costs. About two-thirds of the money go toward producing a big, beautiful, offset-print magazine. We want to really showcase the people and the work in its best possible light. And, because we're working with you to fund this, Issue #1 will be completely ad free! Any money raised on top of this will go towards shipping and contributor costs, as well as business setup costs to help get this thing off the ground.
Every backer will receive a free copy of Issue #0, our 12-page promotional newspaper included in their reward package!
