What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About this project

How Does Kickstarter Work?

It’s an online platform to support entrepreneurs- like me- bring their new projects and products to life!

Why does it exist? Bringing a product to life can be challenging. Kickstarter allows fans of a product or idea to back a project, giving it the extra financial support to push it into production.

In a variety of colors, for both male and female alike

The perks? Backers get special offers, discounts and are the first to receive the product when it releases. Plus they’re supporting a fellow entrepreneur- like me :)

How do you “back” a project? After watching the video above, next take a look on the right side column, and pick whichever reward level you wish!

How important is this? Really, really important. In fact, if I don’t reach my goal, then I won’t be able to bring the EyeCarry project to life! A tragedy! :(

Can I count on you? I sure hope so! Visit EyeCarry Kickstarter Campaign today, and support me in bringing this project to life!

Never lose another pair of glasses!

According to the Vision Council of America, 64% of adults wear prescription eyeglasses. According to informal polls, 100% have lost at least one pair. With 10 minutes per day spent searching for misplaced items, we waste 153 days of our lives peering under furniture and digging through bags.

Can't we do better?

Inventor F. Thomas Godart realized the scope of this problem personally. While overseeing maintenance of a flotilla of yachts, Godart found himself removing his eyeglasses constantly. He had nowhere to put them. The fifth or sixth time a pair of expensive prescription lenses slid off his forehead or shirt and plopped into the bay, he realized this was a real problem. (He refuses to admit exactly how many pairs went overboard.)

Godart decided this was an intolerable amount of trouble. After trying dozens of commercially-available eyeglasses cases, a frustrated Godart decided to create his own solution. The curse of perfect solution discovery had bitten him hard.

Godart hired an industrial designer to create a case to his own specifications. Delighted with his invention, he clipped the case to his belt and didn’t remove it for the next two years. The case traveled with him around the world, by jet and by boat. The case accompanied him to meetings with CEOs, senators, and the Qatari Royal Family.

He never lost another pair of glasses.

“The funny thing about my case,” Godart reminisced, “was everybody noticed it. Everybody wanted one. I had to explain the whole story and give them the industrial designer’s card.”

After the thousandth time someone asked him where to get a glasses case like his, Godart bowed to the inevitable. He patented his case and hired a team of product engineers and a fashion designer to ensure not only robust protection, but elegant styling. He integrated BlueTooth technology and a GPS locator beacon for an additional level of security and convenience. After several years of real-world stress testing, Godart’s invention is ready to solve the lost-and-damaged-eyeglasses problem so many of us face.

We call it EyeCarry.

  • BlueTooth-enabled case pings your phone if you’re more than 100 feet (30 m) away
  • GPS-powered find-my-glasses feature saves time and headaches
  • App includes "Last Known Location" feature, in the event Eyecarry's BlueTooth signal is blocked or obscured, or battery fades out
  • Gator Clip (TM) clasps your belt or purse strap and keeps EyeCarry secure
  • Rugged yet refined, stylish enough for the boardroom
  • Nearly universal fit (suitable for most styles worn today)

Wearable, functional technology

Did you know eyeglasses are the #1 item gathering dust in Lost-and-Found cupboards, drawers, bins, and boxes worldwide? That 55% of prescription lens-wearers lose their glasses every year?

  • EyeCarry offers the world's first BlueTooth integration and app-powered locator for your eyeglasses.
  • BlueTooth notification pings your phone if you leave the "safe zone" of 100' (30 m) without your EyeCarry...
  • GPS locator beacon instantly locates lost lenses
  • "Last known location" points you in the right direction despite BlueTooth interference, or a flatlined battery

You'll never lose your glasses again

EyeCarry stays where you put it, there when you need it

We designed EyeCarry to never leave your side by accident. This patent pending design has a specialty clip engineered to clasp tightly to nearly any belt while hugging the body. That means your case will fit snug on your hip or shoulder strap, and will never fall off even on the busiest day.

  • Gator Clip (TM) grabs on tight and won't let go
  • Universal clip for securing EyeCarry nearly anywhere
  • Shock-resistant magnetic closure keeps glasses safe during rush hour on the subway or a tumble down a black diamond hiking trail

Sleek, stylish, and smart

We weren't content to create a feature-packed glasses case that you wouldn't want to take everywhere

So, after our engineers finalized the basic design and functionality, we engaged a team of fashion consultants to make EyeCarry look amazing

The results? See for yourself!

Choose a color to complement your favorite handbag, or to blend in with your professional attire.

Here are the colors our fashion consultants selected:

  • Aquamarine

Nearly universal fit

Will EyeCarry fit my glasses?

We tested EyeCarry with hundreds of frames from dozens of designers. Based on our testing, EyeCarry comfortably holds 93% of the frames on the shelf at your optometrist's office.

Oversized retro frames, shield-type glasses, and over-prescription sunglasses might not fit. If you think you have a borderline size and are concerned about fit, please measure your glasses:

  • Height (tallest point, top to bottom
  • Total width (with the temple arms closed, side to side)

Post the name of your frames and these measurements in the comments and we'll get right back to you.

Is EyeCarry tough enough?

Scuffs, scratches, bent hinges, ripped-off temple arms... If you're worn glasses for more than a few days, you know how fragile they are. We wanted EyeCarry to keep your glasses safe and secure

Initially, Tom wanted to make EyeCarry strong enough to survive being run over by a taxi (it's a long story), but that made the case just a bit too bulky. We wanted a final design sleek enough to disappear into your clutch, or grasp your belt without ruining the lines of your blazer.

After multiple rounds of materials testing, we finalized a design rugged enough to endure any abuse you're likely to encounter. Your EyeCarry won't stop a bullet. It will protect your glasses from the wear and tear of daily life.

Some places we've taken EyeCarry

We tested EyeCarry in the real world to ensure our final design would endure everyday adventures, including:

  • Capitol Hill meetings with senators
  • Bicycling the Loire Valley vineyards
  • Stalking ivory-billed woodpeckers in eastern Arkansas’ swampy Big Woods
  • Hedge fund board meetings in penthouse conference rooms
  • Down the black Sarenne run, Alpe d'Huez, France
  • Dozens of construction site visits in Miami-Dade County and throughout South Florida
  • Memphis's Beale Street Music Festival
  • To meet the Emir of Qatar and his staff
  • On safari to Sossuvlei and Etosha National Parks, Namibia
  • Nearly 900 working lunches
  • Over 2,000,000 air miles

 Why we need you

After over two years in development, EyeCarry is nearly ready for commercial production!

We're using Kickstarter to raise funds for the custom factory machinery required to manufacture such a complex product. In addition, we can negotiate better pricing from individual vendors when we order large quantities of components.

Each lost pair of glasses meant another wait for the optometrist to make a new pair, not to mention the expense. “I wasn’t just losing them, either,” Godart reported. “Frames were getting bent, lenses scratched… Seems like the combination of boats and salt water is absolutely the worst possible environment for glasses.”

Risks and challenges

Beacon technology is still an evolving concept. Sometimes, battery life for certain beacons is considerably shorter than advertised. So far this isn't the case for our EyeCarry cases. Instead of creating a product you'd have to throw away after the battery fades, we chose a replaceable battery so you can use the same EyeCarry case forever.

Thankfully, our project does not require any regulatory approvals, and we have our prototypes in hand, and all manufacturing ready, set, go!

Of course, there's always the challenge of an on-time delivery. While we believe we've given ourselves the wiggle room in order to mass produce EyeCarry and deliver, unforeseen circumstances sometimes pop up that cause a delay in delivery. Rest assured that if another Snowpocalypse or any other events outside of our control take place resulting in a delay of delivery, we will do everything we possibly can to expedite the process!
