About this project
We survived the Zombie Apocalypse! But now what are we going to eat?
Fact - As of 2011, about 250 million Americans live in or around urban areas. That means more than three-quarters of the U.S. population shares just about three percent of the U.S. land area (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_the_United_States)
Fact - In 2011, the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta (CDC) had one of their most successful emergency preparedness education campaigns ever, "Preparedness 101: Zombie Pandemic" (http://www.cdc.gov/phpr/zombies.htm).
Fact - With the continued concern about threats to our security, both personal and economic, there has been a surge in interest in urban gardening (http://sustainablecitiescollective.com/growninthecity/23018/will-spike-gas-prices-pique-interest-urban-gardens).
But how does an individual or group setup an urban garden, with or without the Zombie Apocalypse? This project will develop and make freely available to anyone, anywhere the step-by-step process involved to get an urban garden going by using a fun and engaging narrative involving a Zombie Apocalypse. To accomplish this goal, a model garden will be established and all activities throughout the entire year will documented with video, detailed instructions, checklists, and web references. Additionally, as a possible phase 2 project, an iPhone and Android app will be developed for use by future urban gardeners providing on-demand information and on-the-spot guidance for their urban garden efforts.
Included in the freely available information will be detailed instructions, checklists, ideas, and suggestions on both the logistics of setting up the garden and getting community involvement, along with video instruction and demonstrations from the model garden throughout the entire project.
Here’s what we need from you to make this project a success:
1st – A commitment to not only survive, but also thrive. Not just avoid being sick, but get healthy. Zombie Apocalypse or not, do you really want to discover how you can improve your wellness and the wellness of those around you? And, if the Zombies do come, good health means you will be able to run faster, fight harder, and be a better Zombie hunter. Good things, right?
2nd – We need you to support this project by making a financial contribution. As soon as you have finished reading this information, go become a backer of this project by choosing one of the funding levels. There are multiple backer levels available, starting as low as $10 and going up to a Recognized General of the Zombie Hunting Army at $2500. What we are doing is creating a reproducible model, available freely at the end of 2012 to anyone, anywhere that gives peoples the tools, instructions, and framework to setup their own garden space, from very small to very large. The Kickstart Funding Goal is a bare minimum to setup the garden space, document our efforts, and make the information freely available. Surpassing our funding goal will allow us to do some creative and amazing things, including increasing the size of the garden, including free online tools and information to get local community involvement, and maybe even have some Zombie’s appear in the video briefings provided to you. This project is going to give people the tools to take charge of their own wellness and engage with others in their community. And when the Zombie’s do come, or gas and groceries just become completely unaffordable, this project will provide a step-by-step guide for people everywhere to establish their own, right-sized garden and maybe even find some others who will be real nice to have as friends if the undead to lurking around. REMEMBER - Kickstart funding is all or nothing. If we don't reach our funding goal, then no funding from any pledges is collected. Help us reach our goal!
3rd – Let at least 5 of your friends know about this project and ask them to hear what we have to say, and then help support and fund us if they think we are doing a good thing and they want to support the defeat of the undead too. That’s 5 friends on Facebook, 5 friends on twitter, 5 friends on Google+ (although I’m not sure there are 5 people using Google+ right now). Send at least 5 friends an email with the link to our Kickstart page. Throw it out in a text to some people. Help us get the word out. Zombie hunting and survival is serious business, after all. Let at least 5 people know about this project. Pass the word and link along about this project along right after you complete your donation.
4th – Sit back and know you’ve done something to launch a revolution today and ensure our survival tomorrow. Since you’ve shown financial support for this project, you will be getting periodic updates about how the project is coming together, what’s going right, what’s going wrong, and how to fix things that need fixed. We will look at how to overcome some of the challenges that will be faced and also make suggestions on how to get those neighbors interested and involved.
So that’s it.
4 steps, all of which you can do right now in under 5 minutes. And with people like you who support this project, those Zombie don’t stand a chance.
