Discordia: Guardians of the Domain, is an online, PvP, tactical video game for Windows, OSX and Linux, set in an epic fantasy world. Players will influence the outcome of the story and the shape of the world by defeating their opponents and gathering points for their own faction.
In Discordia, you embody the will of one of the three factions, called Pillars, each one with its own unique Guardians and Units. Players will obtain collectible units to form different strategies as the game progresses. These units possess a wide array of skills and abilities that will help you in order to beat players from other Pillars in the pursuit towards the conquest of the Domains of Itria, leading your Pillar to victory.
With each victory, you will get essence points for you and the Pillar you represent. The players with the most essence points at the end of a season will get special rewards, and the victorious Pillar will shape the future of the history and the world of Itria!
Additionally, earning victories will get you points that you can later trade for rewards like booster packs, skins, and more in-game goods.
We truly believe that videogames CAN attain the status of a work of art. In Discordia, we have tried to achieve this by having special care in every aspect of the game, the music not being an exception.
We encourage you to listen to a piece of Discordia’s OST, so you can view the rest of the campaign while immersing yourselves in the atmosphere of this new world that we have built for you.
THE PILLARS - CHOOSE ONE FACTION AND DEFEAT YOUR OPPONENTS
You will have to choose one of the three Pillars or factions that struggle for control over the land.
THE GUARDIAN - BUILD YOUR TEAM AND FIGHT FOR YOUR PILLAR
When choosing a Guardian, you will need to consider its skills, battle stats and other characteristics so it fits your strategy and play style. Do you usually take a more defensive approach, with lots of heavy units and healing spells, or do you prefer to charge your way to victory, with strong units and powerful magic attacks?
THE WORLD - INVADE AND PROTECT
In the overview map, before each match, you have the option of invading or defending numerous Dominions. Each victory will grant you essence for your Pillar and take some of this essence away from your opponents. Each conquered Dominion will grant additional essence as well. At the end of a season, the Pillar with the most essence collected will influence the destiny of the world, modifying the story of subsequent seasons.
Each match is divided in the following phases.
- STRATEGIC PHASE
At the start of each match, you will have to place your Guardian and your units in your starting area. Each unit has a Loyalty Cost and each match has it’s own limit of Loyalty points. You can’t exceed that limit with the units you select.
- TACTICAL PHASE
Plan how your units will move and attack, and which skills will they use. But think carefully, because in each tactical phase you will have a limited amount of Action Points that you can assign. Some lighter units won’t waste AP, while the most powerful ones will use two points or more.
- COMBAT PHASE
In this phase, every action you assigned in the tactical phase will be executed. Depending on whether the actions of your units succeed or not, you will start to fill up your essence meter. As you gather more essence, the skills of your units will become more powerful and, if you fill the whole meter, you will have the option of unleashing a Hidden Ability with one of your units (this will deplete your essence meter!).
Hidden Abilites are powerful skills that usually change the flow of the match in your favor. They include powerful damaging spells, permanent buffs to all of your units stats, global healing spells and much, much more
The universe of Discordia is divided in three factions known as the three Pillars. Each Pillar represents a different way of relating to the world and understanding it. All players must choose their ruling Pillar at the beginning of the game which will guide them from then onwards.
The force of nature capable of building worlds, lifting mountains and dig oceans. The players will have power over beasts, arboreal beings, Elementals, savage tribes and all creatures of nature.
The spark containing good and evil; order and chaos. The players will have power over gods, angels, demons, champions and all creatures of the intangible dimensions.
The continuous pursuit of mastery over science, the power of magic and the strength of war. The player will have power over war machines, powerful wizards and legions of soldiers at the service of civilization.
The universe of Discordia was created from the three Pillars that fight for control over the Essence--the energy of creation that answers to the Pillar’s will and desires.
The Pillars intervene in the worlds through the chosen creatures that represent them. These creatures will devote themselves to fight for their Pillar’s supremacy. These representatives, called Guardians, are the only ones able to see and control the Essence, as well as to transform it into energy of creation for their Pillar.
The first edition of Discordia “The Last Lunadae” is set in the region of Itria right after the appearance of a magical creature that was thought to be extinct: A Lunadae.
The Guardians are powerful beings that are chosen by the Pillar to represent and enforce its will in the world of Itria. Before every game, you must chose the Guardian that will represent you during the battle. The selection of the Guardian will be an important part in the formulation of your strategy, because each Guardian will possess different attributes and combat skills.
Their ability to see and control the Essence will allow the Guardians to use it to improve their attributes and skills during combat. Once every Turn, the player will be able to pick an upgrade in the Tree of Essence that will grant the Guardian an improvement in one of their attributes, and a new combat skill.
Each Guardian will have their own story and destiny that will be revealed gradually with every victory.
In addition to the Guardians, the player will also have several Units at their disposition. These creatures and beings from the world of Discordia will assist the players in fulfilling the will of their Pillar. Each unit has different skills that can be combined to generate different and intricate strategies to stand against other Guardians.
In order to add them to their army, players must consider a unit’s loyalty cost. This cost will be linked directly to a unit’s power, turning it into a choice of having several low power units, or a few high power ones
All the units of a Pillar can be unlocked and collected by playing through Story Mode or by unpacking booster packs.
The presence of archetypes can be traced back to the creation of the world itself. It is thought that every being in the universe posses the support of one of the fifteen archetypes present in creation. According to the myth, in the beginning, there were fifteen different constellations. Essence poured from their stars, giving birth to all of creation.
The archetypes represent the myriad of personalities and innate abilities of the creatures, which allows a same Unit to be used for different purposes depending on its archetype. The archetype will be assigned to the unit the moment the player obtains it, and this will modify its combat stats and grant it a unique skill.
In addition to modifying units, each archetype holds a powerful hidden skill that can be unleashed during combat once the essence bar is full. These skills are powerful enough to balance the combat in your favor.
Discordia is a free game, where the only paid content is optional and it does not affect the balance of the game. This additional content consists in more story with new adventures and Guardians, visual upgrades for the Units and Guardians, and booster packs with random new Units.
This format, although sometimes criticized by some gamers and game developers of the industry, is the most adaptable to these type of projects because it requires constant work, updates and maintenance that need a constant income in line with the expenses. We want to be straightforward from the beginning and not change the rules in the future as some other projects have done in the past.
So far we have worked in this game only on a half time basis. With this funding, we would like to devote full time to the project and thus complete the core functionalities of the game (which are almost finished), so we can start the development of the secondary elements of Discordia, like the lobby, the collection tab, the Encyclopedia and every other aspect that aims to enhance the experience of the players.
Additionally, Kickstarter allows us to dedicate 100% of our resources (after taxes, fees and rewards) to the development of the project, unlike other funding methods. This allows us to dedicate every dollar we get to enhance all aspects of Discordia.
The funds we get from Kickstarter will allow us not only to finish the development of the second stage of Discordia, but also gain financial leverage to get more funding, so we can add more content and keep the game running. The main breakdown of the costs of the projects is shown in the graph below:
Movimiento Epico (Epic Movement) is an indie Chilean video game developer company made up of 11 young professionals from different areas that share a common passion for videogames as a form of art.
Each one of us had the fortune of growing up enjoying classics like Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem, Ogre Battle or Shining Force, among others, as well as some board games and miniature wargames, all of which have influenced the development of Discordia either in a direct or indirect way. These great titles shaped our love for tactical videogames and our dream of creating a game that is as powerful as those master pieces.
We have worked very hard and for a long time to reach this goal, and we have made our best effort to achieve the perfection and quality that our players deserve. Even though we are a small enterprise, we accepted the challenge of creating a project and took the time to make every aspect of the art, lore and mechanics perfect. Every decision has been made using gameplay tests and having long discussions with our team.
This has led us to redo many aspects of the game, but at the same time it has given us enough maturity to create a final prototype. We have had the privilege of being awarded funding by the state for the development of the arts and culture, as well as the recognition from the local industry in several fairs and events. We are active partners of VGC (Video Games Chile), a Chilean professional association of video game developer companies that is recognized by the IGDA (International Game Developers Association).
Risks and challenges
We have the core functionalities of the game already developed, so now we have to start producing assets in a greater scale and implement the online mode, lobby, store and other user interfaces.
Given that, the development of the project can always suffer some unexpected setbacks, but we as a team are prepared to deliver the first open version of the game in the first quarter of 2017, either by getting funds elsewhere or/and by working extra time as we have done so many times in Discordia. We have a multidisciplinary team that can adapt and solve issues that arise in a day to day basis quickly and efficiently.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
