Nerdy Science Stuff (that we love)
Thermodynamics at work:
(Thermal) Conduction: absorption of a lot of energy without changing temperature. Water is more conductive than air, which makes it a better vehicle for heat transfer. The Vortex™ capitalizes on water’s superior conductive capability at a steady, maintained temperature for a faster, safer thaw.
Convection: heat transfer in a gas or liquid by the circulation of currents. Convection ovens cook foods quicker than conventional ovens. The Vortex™ circulates water, creating currents throughout the container, to quickly thaw frozen foods.
Logarithmic thawing relationship:
We ran over 100 individual thawing tests of various frozen foods to generate a proprietary algorithm to accurately predict thawing time:
The Vortex™ team has been working tirelessly since the beginning of 2014. We have tested and modified the design through several iterations to ensure thawing time accuracy and the proper balance of motor speed and efficiency.
This will be the fourth product that this team has invented and developed, so we know what it takes to bring an idea to market. If funded, the final steps for this project will be to move from prototype to production sample and order the custom injection molds and components for the Vortex’s unique design. If we can achieve our goal, the first Vortex™ devices will ship to backers in May 2015.

Risks and challenges
The Vortex™ team has years of development, sourcing and manufacturing experience. Specifically, we have a history of inventing, designing and manufacturing quality products with sourcing and production both domestic and overseas.
Despite our expertise and careful planning, there are risks to the project. We have identified and outlined the following key risks to our project below:
1. Risk due to problems with the injection mold:
Injection molding is a process that can often delay the launch of hardware products; however, our design has been reviewed and simplified to minimize any risk of delay.
2. Risk due to excess demand:
Should we receive support in excess of our anticipated demand, there could be delays in backers receiving their products. However, our production model has significant capacity.
3. Risk due to sourcing of the custom controller:
Our team has experience building and developing custom controllers. Despite the proficiency of the team, it is possible that the development schedule could slip due to the custom nature of the design.
4. Risk due to suppliers:
We have relationships with our suppliers and are confident in our timeline. However, it is possible that our project gets delayed due to issues with suppliers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
