About This Project

My name is Michael Trant, and I like to write.

Between helping run our family sheep station with my wife and her parents, and working off farm in mine camps, I jot down words.

I began playing with words a couple of years back when people started telling our story for us, and getting it completely wrong. I started a blog, Farmers Way of Life. It's gone quite well. Some of my favorite posts vary from opinion, humorous anecdotes to farming life,  a Murphys Law of Farming (the most popular work I've done) and some dabbling in poetry. The National Library of Australia included my blog in their Pandora Web Archive in 2013, much to my surprise, and followers said I should write a book.

So I did. And now I'm asking for your help to get it finished.

Synopsis

Wydjawanna could be any outback station, and the family in this tale could be any outback family who run these vast Australian properties.

A story of life, love and loss, Wydjawanna Station begins with preparations for the summers mustering program, and the arrival of their new worker Alexi, a young Estonian backpacker, who is not what the family were expecting.

The season is perfect, the sheep are fat and the muster is going beautifully, until a series of events leaves everyone battling to save their livestock, their property and even themselves. Friendships are forged, fights are fought and lives are touched.

Colourful characters, tall tales and heartfelt sorrow all combine to tell this Aussie bush yarn, and answer the question, Wydjawanna Station.

About the Manuscript

Wydjawanna is in its fourth incarnation, after some excellent feedback from friends and family. It currently sits at around 88000 words after being run through the draft race multiple times. The first part of Chapter One can be found here.

Where will your money go?

These days everyone is a writer. And although you may be a good writer, you may not be a good novelist. I need people who know about these things to help, and they cost money. I will also need to get it copy edited (proofed) and find a company to develop it in both ebook and print-on-demand format.

Specifically, your funds will go towards:

  • Kickstarter fees assocaiated with funding this
  • Manuscript Assessment - possibly twice depending on the first results
  • Copy Editing
  • Formatting and Printing
  • Distribution and Postage
  • Promotions
  • Extra copies for promotion and freebies.

.....and of course, your own copy of Wydjawanna Station, in whatever format you've chosen.

If you become a backer, you'll get updates from me on the progress of the project.

I also have a follow up / tie in novel to Wydjawanna underway, as well as a couple of other ideas in progress. Thats the scatter brain in me coming out. I need a USB port in my skull.

My Goal is to create a story people can enjoy, and give an insight into life on an Australian sheep station and the people who run them.

Video Credits - Music - 'Going Home' by Mark Knopfler - performed and recorded by Warwick Trant (onya Dad).

All footage recorded at Gabyon Station over the last few years.

Risks and challenges

The main risk to this project is a delay in its completion, most likely due to distractions from my main priority - Keeping Gabyon Station. That said, part of keeping Gabyon involves me working in mine camps, which have much better wifi, phone signal and free time than at home. I'm actually creating this page in one of them now.

I hope to avoid delays. This project has been sitting on my laptop for too long as it is. And it might stop the harassment from my wonderful blog followers to get it finished, for a little while anyway.
