The QT TRAINER
The QT Trainer is an ergonomically designed kayak simulator to help train and teach every paddling discipline - wild water, slalom, marathon, adventure, sea kayaking, sprint, surf, rodeo, polo and recreational. This unique kayak exercise machine expedites core and total body conditioning, while simultaneously teaching correct kayaking technique. The remarkable QT Trainer can be tailored for every size paddler with all working parts adjustable. The benefits of the QT are not just for the avid paddler. Even if you have never paddled a boat, you too can enjoy the cardio work-out of the QT.
The adjustable OmniGear Resistance System, working in conjunction with our TransCatch Drive Train, scales up smooth, controlled, ergonomic workouts; with no strings attached! Variable resistance points control the workload in all dimensional planes. This efficient, impact-free, cross-workout benefits the entire body from head to toe.
The QT Trainer perfectly complements gym bikes, elliptical trainers, treadmills, walking, hiking, and bicycling. It’s amazingly compact, ultra-lightweight, portable, quiet-in-use, and affordable.
Club coaches can get the most out of their training time by combining two or four QT Trainers to create indoor K2 and K4 training sessions when weather conditions prohibit on-water training.
We have our design, the working prototypes, the engineered drawings and the patents filed. What's next? In approximately twenty-four weeks from full funding, we can be shipping the QT Trainer to your doorstep. We need your help with initial tooling, manufacturing and production. The QT Trainer requires seventeen different tools to be made so we can produce the Injection Molded parts. Our goal for the Kickstarter campaign was determined by the cost of making these tools and the cost of the first production run of complete units. Once these tools are made they will be used for full QT Trainer production.

THE QT TRAINER WORKS
The QT Trainer is ideal for improving and correcting the forward stroke, as do other products to some degree, but the QT Trainer can advance one's technique in the reverse stroke, basic, continuous, and sculling draw strokes. Even sweep strokes have potential on the QT Trainer. All strokes benefit from the multiple resistance of the OmniGear and TransCatch system.
In addition to paddle movements, the QT Trainer can be used for muscle conditioning and strengthening. The OmniGear and TransCatch can provide the necessary resistance for every level of athlete from the rank novice to the Olympic competitor. For example, consider the following exercise command: "When kayaking the knuckles are UP -- now take an underhand grasp of the horizontal shaft so the knuckles are DOWN-- sitting in an upright position, start the action as one would if doing CURLS with a curl bar in a gym." Increase the resistance, increase the repetitions, prepare for the burn!
The variety of motions and actions one can apply from the same position on the same unit during the same training session are almost infinite while working all the major muscle groups. The QT Trainer leads to a session that increases flexibility as well as the consistent benefit of technical training without high impact.
OMNIGEAR & TRANSCATCH
The OmniGear is the resistance and stability focal point of the QT Trainer. The OmniGear provides adjustable resistance simulating the motion of a variety of kayaking strokes. The OmniGear stabilizes the vertical shaft providing a consistently and technically sound stroke.
The TransCatch is where the adjustable vertical shaft connects with the horizontal shaft/paddle. Two knobs provide varying tension for feathering the axle for left and right kayak strokes. The feathering angle of the blades can be measured on the degree markers at the end of the shaft. The unique double-wedge effect of the TransCatch simulates the "catch" of the paddle blade entering the water.
The combined actions of the OmniGear and the TransCatch provide a remarkable kayak simulation that all paddlers will enjoy and benefit, especially when inclement weather crushes your desire to paddle, or your workout time is limited. The QT Trainer is your answer.
The QT Trainer is conveniently designed to be lightweight and transportable. It measures 42 inches long, 16 inches wide, and when collapsed only 9 inches high. The QT Trainer can be stored virtually anywhere and will fit in most cars with ease.
Danny and Joe have extensive international contacts in the kayak community. The news of the QT Trainer will spread quickly through social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc...) and the demand will be high.
Both Danny and Joe believe the QT Trainer is a machine that can be used by the general public for fitness OR by paddlers of all levels for technique training as well as fitness. The possibilities are amazing for the paddling community including specially designed training routines geared toward all the paddling disciplines. They envision a market for basic electronic wearables for monitoring conditioning and training schedules. An athlete can train with video simulations like an Olympic slalom course, a favorite whitewater run, or the intensity of Hawaii's Molokai, and add to their enjoyment of training. The QT Trainer companion website will provide access to training routines developed by high-level coaches, personal trainers and international kayak competitors.
The QT Trainer has the huge potential in the physical therapy market, providing effective workouts for recuperating and strengthening exercises that are low impact, helping with flexibility and range of motion. Physical therapist will add the QT Trainer to their regimen complementing treadmills and other exercise equipment. The affordable QT Trainer will make an immediate impact on the health community, and we expect and anticipate feedback that will help improve the QT Trainer for the health industry.
Danny and Joe are dedicated, lifetime paddling enthusiasts, with a deep interest and commitment to paddle-sports; with extensive connections, and excellent business reputations. Our customers are our friends.
Danny Broadhurst is the designer and creator of the QT Trainer. He came to Long Island, New York, in 1975 from the United Kingdom and is a life-long competitive world-class paddle-sports athlete. His illustrious career in kayaking includes competing, designing, and coaching in multiple disciplines (Surfing, Slalom, Marathon, WW Racing) at the highest level. He is a renowned designer and manufacturer of leading-edge kayaks and equipment for racing, fitness, surfing, as well as sit-on-tops for general recreation.
What was Danny's motivation for developing the QT Trainer? He had always been tinkering with kayak training machines, but in short, his health. A heart attack can be a life-changing event, and so it was for Danny. Those who live and train above the snow belt know the horrors of trying to effectively train during the off season (like all northern climates of the US, Europe and Asia) can be a brutal place for midwinter training in a kayak. Many days are just too cold, blustery, tempestuous, or ice-choked for paddling. So, urgently needing his exercise, Danny did what any discerning world-class boat designer would do. Danny revisited his old sketches and revived his interest in ‘indoor paddling machines’. Prototypes were developed - he still uses the original. Now, like his friends who have been allowed to see and use it, he simply cannot wait to get the production models produced!
Joe Vinson is Co-Owner and President of KayakTrader.com and sole owner of RACEceiver, an auto racing communications company. Joe’s product streamlined auto racing and safety, with 80% of the racetracks in the United States requiring drivers to use the Raceceiver for communications with the tower.
Most of his family is involved in kayaking in one way or another and he competes in several kayak races each year. His love of kayaking inspired him to partner with his Son-in-law and daughter to form KayakTrader.com, an online classifieds website for all types of personal water crafts.
Risks and challenges
The QT Team anticipates minor adjustment to parts once tooling is completed to enhance the functioning of the QT. The tooling manufacturer is already prepared to expedite any necessary improvements.
After we have met our funding goal, the marketing and distributing of the QT Trainer is fully in place for the United States. The biggest challenge is answering the demand in international markets in the European Union and Australia. Joe and Danny are already in discussion with paddling enthusiasts, like themselves, to help bring the QT Trainer worldwide.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
