Enduring the Night: Courageous stories of survival by former girl soldiers
Background: Why We Chose to Write
Today there are 35 conflict zones around the world where children are growing up in the shadow of war. In recent years, the nature of armed conflict has resulted in even more threats to children. And for the girl child, the threat is even greater.
But these girls are not victims, they are survivors. We know them, and so do you. They are—mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends, and the world needs to hear their stories.
As one of our friends in Uganda said: “If we mourned all of those who died, then we would die of sadness. Instead, we will laugh and share their stories. This is how we honor them. This is how we survive.”

About the Book
This book is 150 pages of stunning images and powerful stories as told by former girl soldiers. 100% of the proceeds will go toward supportive services for war-affected women like those featured in the book. Here is an excerpt from the book’s premise:
“Lifted from the rich traditions of storytelling in Uganda, this book seeks to capture the true stories of war, heartache, faith and forgiveness in one community from the moving perspective of one special survivor, named Grace. …With experiences and emotions that transcend time and place, this book delivers a journey from darkness to light as told by those who experienced it most closely.
…Brought together by the work of one organization, ChildVoice, to restore the voices of children silenced by war, Grace and other survivors share their stories as part of their journeys toward healing and spiritual transformation.
…Through these stories, readers may find strength for personal journeys toward healing, and the courage to face their obstacles. Powerful, provoking, and educational, Enduring the Night invites the reader to join the conversation and be a part of something greater, for in doing so, one cannot helped but be moved to action in support of women worldwide.”

Risks and challenges
Enduring the Night has been in the works for several years now. We have a strong passion for supporting young women, and we have been driven by that passion to develop a quality, meaningful and truthful portrayal of their stories as told by them.
We have reduced any risk by doing the hard work on the back end. We worked with translators over several years so that the storytelling may also be a part of the natural healing process of rehabilitation. We worked with photographers who have come to know the young women and have a vested interest. We have formed an incredible team of contributors and supporters from start to finish. It is because of the hard work of this team (counselors, translators, photographers, videographers, publishers, editors, and more) that we can promise you a quality product that is directly benefiting the girls whose stories it portrays. 100% of this books proceeds will go back to supportive services for war-affected young women and their families.
The content of the book is complete and the editing and publishing process is underway. At the conclusion of this Kickstarter campaign, we can begin printing an initial run of 2,000 soft cover copies of the book. We can promise that you will receive your copy of the book within 3 weeks from the book's printing.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
