Black Kids in Outer Space is an editorial vlog and podcast LLC under the category of social enterprise. We report and educate on the topics of urban planning, transportation, and the environment in the Black community in the United States, Canada, the UK, and anywhere our passport and/or Internet connection can get us to.
Outer space refers to the outside and the hyper-segregation of the Black community. In order to do this project we need an injection of funding. We have so far put up $5000 of our own money and we need $10,000 in order to get investors interested.
We most recently were honored by Smart Growth America as one of the Best Complete Streets Initiatives in 2017, but we do not want to be a nonprofit.
Storytelling for Black people in the nonprofit realm is one sided, paternalistic, and deficit focused. We do not want to tell that story. We are not doing this to get paid, we're doing this to inform, empower, and amplify the public's concerns on the topic of space.
We are based in NYC and Los Angeles, but we cover New Jersey and everywhere there is a significant Black population.
We have covered Atlanta, Philadelphia and we're going to Wisconsin, Canada, and the UK. We have no borders.
Risks and challenges
We're already up and going, but currently we're a small operation. Content is king, but we would like studio time, a professional editor, and to grow our team.
We are on a shoestring budget. Lark can do production, editing, booking, producing, and manage all facets of this work, which is great, but one person cannot be great at everything.
This project is happening with or without the funding, but we need the funding to grow and be better and to create an archive and body of work that will support people presently and in the future.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
