About

This project aims to provide a custom made milled Oak dice box that covers many different game/dice requirements.  Please pitch in with comments if you have ideas that this box could be adapted for.  Each box is custom made in Scotland, so you can put your own individual stamp on it.

This project is for CUSTOMISED dice boxes and dice trays.  There is NO ADDITIONAL COST FOR ENGRAVING.

Each box can be customised on BOTH sides, with either text or an image from this project.  You can have two sides with images, two sides with text, or one of each.

If you select the reward level that also has the dice tray, you can have custom engraving on both sides of that as well!

No dice are included - shown for illustration only.

Background

I am a father of two grown up game-playing children. I made a wooden dice box for my daughter's D&D dice set (twice, as the first one wasn't big enough for her dice) as they seem at risk of damage rattling against each other in a bag, and then for my son's 12mm Warhammer dice. He wanted a graphic device engraved on his, just to be challenging. They were both pleased, and their friends were impressed. So far so good.

Next up was a compact D&D dice box for a standard set of 7 polyhedral dice, run as a Kickstarter - you can find it here.

I became aware at this point that many people playing games other than D&D would like a nice box for their dice; faux velvet bags and plastic boxes just don't hack it when you love your games!

Also, people want a personalised box, not an off-the-shelf-anybody-can-buy-one generic offering.

Dice Boxes For All

So here we are trying to reach out to more people, with a more generic design to hold up to 10 dice, any combination of d10, d8 or d6. Why stop there?  An interior configuration that also takes D&D polyhedral dice is also offered!

Milled from solid Oak this dice box is 115x90x24mm and the top and bottom are held together with 4 x N42 neodymium magnets - strong magnets (rated 1.6kg pull each)! A finger ridge around the middle makes it easier to get a proper grip to separate the two halves.

This first configuration is ideal for d10, d8 or d6, any combination.  All dice pockets are milled to a depth of 8.3mm, allowing for any dice with a nominal maximum height of just over 16mm.

Inside the box
Inside the box

If you want the option of storing a D&D set in this box, a circular option is available, where one row of 4 is milled deeper (10.2mm) allowing for 4 dice up to 20mm nominal height and 6 up to 16mm nominal height.  You will need one of those for each of a standard d20, d12 & (probably) d4.

Alternative configuration for inside

This circular configuration will also still accomodate d10s, d8s & d6s.

D10s, D8s & D6s in circular pockets

I can even get a set of 20 Warhammer 12mm d6s in - two per circular pocket.

20 12mm Warhammer D6s
20 12mm Warhammer D6s

Why not make every pocket as deep as possible?  Two reasons. Firstly, rattle space - if you put 16mm dice (d10, d8, d6) into a 20mm (d20) space they will rattle quite a lot.

The second reason is to do with image engraving/carving.  Some images (like the dragon) are cut to a standard depth of 1mm.  With a 12.5mm thick piece of wood 12.5mm - 10.2mm pocket = 2.3mm of wood, leaving a 1.3mm thickness of wood at the thinnest point after carving (the carved line is so narrow it doesn't significantly impact the strength of the box). The Day of the Dead Skull, optimally carved, goes 2.5mm deep in places so would cut through into the dice pocket area.

When we talk about "optimally carved" we mean having a v-shaped cut to the width we want; if you wanted Day of the Dead Skull carved on a deep pocket box we can do that for you, but some of the carving won't be as deep - not a difference you would notice without very close inspection (you would probably never know if we hadn't mentioned it here).

OR we can carve the image slightly smaller to get the "optimally carved" profile without exceeding our allowance of wood.  Each box is individually made so we are happy to give you choices if we think your dice configuration clashes with your select engraving.

The dice box is optionally stained with a dark dye and finished with varnish.

Compact Dice Tray

Don't say we don't listen to people.  Feedback has shown a demand for a nice, compact, dice tray.  So we have extended our offering to a dice tray that embraces the dice box and is also held together with (smaller) N42 magnets.

The magnets holding the two halves of the dice tray together in play are to stop them coming apart with a dice roll - they won't give you a tray strong enough to serve drinks from - if you attempt this please send us video ;-)

The dice tray can be customised as much as the dice box itself, so you can have another two images or text inscriptions.

We'd love to have been able to offer the dice tray at a lower price, but the fact is it takes longer to mill the dice tray (being larger) than the dice box.

As an unplanned bonus we have found that the dice tray, when closed, works as an amplifier for your mobile phone!

The dice tray is designed to be used as a single tray, but for small numbers of dice works perfectly well as two small dice trays if you want to split it.

Images

The first Kickstarter offered several designs for the outside of the box; it quickly became apparent that there weren't enough!  So this time we are starting with all the designs from the previous project (but they will look extra awesome because this box is 77% bigger) plus extra designs that we've come up with (through our own work, licensing, and commissioning).

It should be noted that there is a difference in clarity between plain Oak and dark stained Oak - the two pieces below are identical engravings, each coated with PU satin varnish.  If you want plain (light coloured) Oak you are best to stick with strong images like Celtic Knot.

The following are photographs of the images carved onto boxes (stained dark Oak).

If you don't see anything you like (or even if you do) please leave suggestions in the comments for additional designs.

The wolf is very effective - a licensed image that we just had to include.

Someone told us "cats - anything to do with cats" so this was commissioned specially for this Kickstarter.

Celtic designs seem popular (from a previous Kickstarter) so this simple but effective knot has been developed as a new addition.

This dwarf was a commissioned piece - nobody asked for a dwarf but I just felt it was appropriate to have one!  I've always felt more of a connection to Gimli than Legolas ...

This skull is a favourite of ours - some things just work very well in carving and this is one of them.

This Celtic Cross is a design that was created in-house as a standalone cross (available from our Etsy shop) and someone asked for a Celtic Cross on the compact dice box project so ... it was converted for engraving.

The next image is a commissioned work, our first foray into the horror/vampire world.  Let us know in the comments if this is the sort of thing you would like more of ... or what you would prefer as an alternative.

Below is the original Celtic Knot design we produced for dice boxes - very effective on any colour of wood with its simple, clear lines.

Custom Text

We also found that two thirds of backers wanted custom text.  This is a pain, as they are all different, all have to be double checked.

However, despite what the Rolling Stones said, you can get what you want.  If it is short (-ish).  Think along the lines of a maximum 4 lines of 15 characters per line and you won't go far wrong.

Text requirements are gathered on the Kickstarter survey (assuming the project is successful) and we send digital previews by email so that you can confirm the size/layout/content is what you want.  The wood grain shown in digital previews is not necessarily representative of the wood grain in your dice box - trees do their own thing and patterns vary.

For comparison, here is that digital preview carved in stained Oak.

Please bear in mind that unstained wood does not show detail very well (see image comparisons at the top of this page); essentially, "wood on wood" does not show up much better that "white on white.  If you want plain, unstained wood, we recommend that text should be restricted to very few words so that they can be carved large enough to be legible over the grain of the wood.

Fonts

Much as I would like to offer free rein on choice of font, carving in wood does give some restrictions (given the space we have) so you should be thinking of choosing from the following:

Manufacturing

All dice boxes are made by me (Donald, Don for short), in Scotland - I do not design in-house and then pass to a far-east factory for manufacture. Check out www.woodendonkay.uk (links to Etsy shop) for some of the larger boxes (and other stuff).

The dice used for testing fit are from Chessex CHX27419 (standard polyhedral set) and Chessex CHX29005 ANKH d10s; sizes are (measured flat face to flat face, not point to point):

  • D10 15.9mm
  • D8 15.1mm
  • D6 15.1mm

Various other dice have also been used (Star Wars Armada, Horus Heresy Legion and various random dice we have lying around).

The dice pockets in the box are milled over-sized to make getting dice in and out easy; a D8 is 18.3mm wide when resting flat and the individual compartments are slightly wider to accommodate them.

Note that the box is intended for D6 dice that are nominally 16mm - it will not take 19mm D6 dice.

Magnets are N42, rated 1.6kg each, and measure 12mm x 2mm. Safety information is available at http://woodendonkay.com/SafetyInformation.pdf - should the magnets somehow come loose (unlikely since they have to be pounded in with a hammer) care should be taken to keep them away from children and pets as they are dangerous if swallowed.

Finishing

Finishing is with polyurethane varnish, 2 coats on the inside and 3 coats on the outside.  This is our finish of choice because it can be re-coated quickly and provides good moisture protection for the wood.

If you don't like PU and would rather apply your own finish (using oils or waxes) we will happily provide the milled, engraved, sanded and (optionally) stained wooden product for you to apply your own finish if you so desire.  Please note that this should be done very soon as the wood will warp if given time to absorb moisture.

Shipping

We will ship to most countries. If you want to pledge and your country is not listed for rewards, please send a message or leave a comment and we will see if we can add your destination.

Estimated Delivery

Note that apart from the limited reward tier the estimated delivery is "from" the month specified.  Production will commence as soon as we are confident that the funding target will be reached, and customisation will begin as soon as reward surveys start to come back.  Priority will be given to the "I want one now!" reward tier but we won't hold back waiting for their surveys.

There is no "early bird" as such, just a faster delivery tier.  Apart from delivery time there is no difference between the single box tiers.

Anyone looking for two boxes will be also be given priority treatment - if you have a friend who would like one too you should order between you for faster service, reduced prices and saving on shipping.

Why Kickstarter?  What is the money for?

Kickstarter is where a lot of gamers look, and it's a great platform to get suggestions from your customers to enhance your product offering.

We set low targets because we don't want to let down people who are willing to back us, even if we don't achieve the level of backing we would really like.  Our funding target is the minimum that we can break even on, not including labour costs; we really need much more than that to continue development of new products.

Having already invested thousands of pounds in CNC hardware and software, we need to spend more on equipment to be able to make the dice trays in any quantity (the one in the video is part-CNC, part hand-made).

We have already invested in the kit and done a lot of development work - the funds from Kickstarter will also go towards paying back that investment, buying more materials (hardwood is not cheap, neither are neodymium magnets) and allowing us to continue to develop more products.

Plus, we like to eat, and wear clothes and live in a house. :-)

Risks and challenges

The risks with this project are very small.

A dice box Kickstarter (for 7 polyhedral D&D dice) has already been delivered - this is a larger box, easier to work with and more material between the milled dice pocket and the outside face (couldn't get one of the Celtic knot designs to work on the smaller box as I kept cutting through to the dice compartment).

Experience has been gained.

Also, I have completed several working dice boxes in this projects format to prove that it is do-able and repeatable - evidence is in the pictures & video! Making more is not an issue; except, perhaps ... I make these myself so if I were to become ill there would obviously be delays; I am something of a workaholic (last project had all boxes made & sent out within 3 weeks of Kickstarter fulfillment - just 1 week after payment from Kickstarter came in).

Delivery will be impacted for backers who don't reply to their surveys - I managed to track down one backer who had mistyped their email address into Kickstarter (first project they had backed) but I can't guarantee to repeat that feat so make sure your email address is correct in your Kickstarter account!
