"bigmoose began after a very sad event in my life, i lost my best mate to cancer in 2007 and after this i vowed to myself to get the most out of every minute of my time on this planet. the last few years of running bigmoose stuff has been a great journey, and i really want to continue doing fun stuff that inspires people to live better, healthier, kinder lives.
bigmoose has never been about making money and everything we have done in the past few years has been completely funded by donations." - jeff smith, founder of bigmoose
where did the coffee shop idea originate?
this idea came after we had been down to feed the homeless people of cardiff every month for just over 2 years. it grew from just taking tea and coffee down, to getting restaurants involved in making food, bringing hairdressers down to cut the homeless people’s hair and rallying the south wales community to collect warm clothes and bedding (over 1100 bags donated in 2 months!)
however, even with all of this in place we still felt like we wanted to make more of a difference to these people’s lives and so bigmoose coffee co was born.
the idea is simple we are going to be opening a coffee shop in the centre of cardiff which will run like a normal coffee shop selling epic coffee and lush food! but… its not just any old coffee shop.. the profits from bigmoose coffee co will be used to help homeless people get back into work and society. we will provide training, mentoring and guidance and we will ensure all of our employees are paid the living wage.
why do we need your help?
with your help we can get this project off the ground and hopefully change lives. our aim is to start from zero and create a fully functioning coffee shop that is supported by people all over the world who want to help us make a difference.
so far we have a project manager, builders, a lawyer, an architect, a quantity surveyor, plumbers and tonnes of volunteers willing to be labourers all working free of charge. however we will still need funds for materials and we would love for you to support this venture and come on the journey with us to help create a space that will inspire everyone who walks through the doors.
owners: jeff and chloe smith = we are a father daughter team (and also best buds!) who have always enjoyed helping others. in 2010 we climbed mount kilimanjaro together raising £15k and that is where this journey began!
the ‘we couldn’t do it without you people’:
tania = wife to jeff, mum to chloe and all round legend! head of creating delicious delights on the menu and coming up with ideas that make us high five and smile from ear to ear on a daily basis!
tiffany = daughter to tania and jeff, sister to chloe (we told you this was a family affair!!) tiff lives in london and keeps us clued up with what's happening on the other side of the bridge with all things coffee and cake! she is a team player and will always taste test possible menu items! cheers tiff!
shelley = possibly the friendliest person on the planet! shelley will be our manager at the shop, you will spot her by looking for the brunette who is laughing her way through the day!
ian = a.k.a merlin. this guy is a total legend and like the wizard, he just makes thing happen. ian is leading us through the construction stages of the shop and we literally couldn't do it without him.
although these guys are absolutely key, we have hundreds of people who have volunteered and supported us over the years and we consider every single one of these people to be part of our team!
Risks and challenges
there are many challenges that come with starting a project like this but we have researched and spent a long time planning and we truly believe we are ready!
we have engaged with many 'experts' in all fields, from building to coffee to food to health and safety and with these amazing people on the team we feel we are armed for every eventuality.
we want this project to have a community feel and for everyone to feel part of it, so if you want to get involved in any capacity, please let us know! the more the merrier :)
