About

In this era of political tension, when civic culture is fractured and when the value of the liberal arts is questioned, a message from 1963 has particular resonance. Twenty-seven days before he was assassinated, President John F. Kennedy came to Amherst College to honor the poet Robert Frost. He spoke of the relationship between poetry and power and of a view shared with Frost that power must be exercised, but wisely--tempered by a moral restraint inspired by the arts and a liberal arts education. And, he spoke of the obligation of those “given a running start in life” to serve the public interest.

The President and The Poet, a new documentary coinciding with the 2017 centenary of JFK’s birth, communicates the impact of this message through the stories of Amherst alumni and reflections by prominent scholars and political observers. Conceived by members of the Amherst class of 1964 and produced by an award-winning filmmaker, Northern Light Productions, this film will ignite public discourse on enduring values and on our shared responsibility for the public interest. It is a call to action to rebuild our civic sphere-- infused with broad sympathy, understanding, and compassion.

We have already raised funds to develop the film concept and to complete the sample film included in this proposal. The requested funds will fund the next step, development of the treatment document, which will allow us to set out the story line, identify the characters and further delineate the themes to be covered in the film. We will then be ready to commence production filming subject to the success of fundraising efforts already well underway.

Risks and challenges

The substantive risks of completing the treatment document relate only to raising the $6,000 sought through this Kickstarter campaign. Our filmmaker is a highly professional company that has been in business for 35 years and has completed many PBS productions including a one-hour national broadcast within the last month. Any money in excess of $6,000 will go directly into production filming.
