About this project

A New Breed of Tools.
The concept of the shovel has existed for thousands of years. We're DMOS Collective and we've spent the last year completely re-designing shovels for skiers and snowboarders. We've pulled in some friends along the way: Travis Rice, Tim Durtschi, Zeppelin Zeerip, Blaine Gallivan, and Andrew Burns to name a few. Together, we've dreamed big and designed the ultimate terrain building tool: The Kicker Tool™.
The idea is simple: the tools needed to build snow-based jumps have not kept up with the rapid progression of snowboarding or freeskiing. Traditional avalanche shovels don’t provide enough shovel leverage or grooming essentials and the shovels and rakes you might buy at a hardware store aren’t collapsible, lightweight, or designed for extreme temperatures. DMOS was born to satisfy the need for pro-quality, purpose-built, rugged durable tools to build a better jump.
The Kicker Tool™ is the ultimate terrain-building tool for skiers, snowboarders and groms looking to get creative, go big, and have fun. Built to last with aircraft quality aluminum alloy throughout the body of the shovel, the Kicker Tool ™ comes with a purpose built shovel head that efficiently moves, packs and rakes large amounts of snow to build and sculpt the perfect jump.
The Kicker Tool™ isn't your everyday shovel - we've dreamed big and designed a bomber snow moving, jump building machine.
Durable Materials, Built-to-Last Design.
At nearly twice the thickness of an avalanche shovel, this shovel won't give you grief.
- Shovel Head: 2.5 mm aircraft quality 6061 aluminum alloy (this sucker won’t bend an inch)
- Telescoping Tubular Shaft: 1.6 mm aircraft quality 6061 aluminum alloy
- Stress tested in laboratory and the field conditions in temps ranging from -40 to 110 degrees F
Superior Snow Sculpting.
Admit it — your avy shovel doesn't cut it. Literally. A serrated edge along the bottom lip of the Kicker Tool™ levels unwanted bumps and breaks up crud. The precision-machined teeth are sharp enough to cut snow but not your pack.
56 inches of leverage for quick, powerful shoveling.
Go-go-gadget shovel. The Kicker Tool™ quickly assembles into a powerful terrain-building tool; telescoping from 18" into an indexed locking 56.5" power shaft saves your back and builds faster.
Oversized 18 x 9 inch blade.
Build, pack and rake snow twice as fast with an oversized shovel head.
Take Kicker Tool™ Anywhere.
When it is time to move, the Kicker Tool™ converts into a packable unit that fits into every backcountry, ski pack we tested. And at 3.3 pounds, it doesn't weigh much more than a full water bottle.
You might even want a Kicker Tool™ for the field AND your car. It's stashable, more durable, and larger than your avalanche shovel. Better yet, it fits in your flat bed, back seat or trunk better than a hardware store shovel.
Field tested under 3,886 lbs of force at -40F
This thing is rugged. The Kicker Tool™ has been stress tested in laboratory and field conditions in temps ranging from -40 to 110 degrees F. With creds like these, we think that the Kicker Tool™ is quite simply one of the most burley shovels ever created.
We’re inspired by the people who make it look easy. The people who film them. And all the groms, park crews, and shredders out there looking to further the sport. Here's who has helped us get to where we are today:
To pre-order The Kicker Tool™, back us by picking a reward that contains The Kicker Tool™. Simple as that. Once you have pledged, sit back and relax. We'll collect your shipping / fulfillment info when the project is complete, in early December.
Once you pledge, you're in for a fun ride. Throughout our campaign we'll be updating backers with footage of our latest and greatest and host live hangouts with Travis Rice, Tim Durtschi, and the DMOS team. We are placing our production order based on our Kickstarter campaign results. The bulk of our shipment is scheduled to arrive in our warehouse in February 2016.
For our Kickstarter backers, we're offering the Pro Stealth black Kicker Tool™. We've anodized the blade in matte black and then masked the blade with an abstract, distressed DMOS semi-gloss logo. If we reach our funding goal, we'll release Pro Griz, a brown on brown version of the same. Subtle, understated. durable finishes, this Kicker Tool™ has a design and a finish built to last.

While we’re a new company, this isn’t our first rodeo. Before DMOS existed, our team has a collective resume of launching products (and companies), many of which you’ve heard of and some of which you might even own.
For Kicker Tool™ development, we started with two designs from which we made 15 prototypes and then selected the best overall prototype to launch here. These prototypes were field tested by our team, athletes (Travis Rice, et al.), and then, based on testing input, modified yet again.
Our factory is one of the best in the business when it comes to shovels. For over 25 years, our factory has worked with the world’s top brands to produce avalanche shovels, probes, and ski poles. They have sophisticated quality control, testing capabilities and some of the world’s best anodizing. In short, these guys kick ass at making shovels.
We’ve already made 4 rounds of factory samples and tested at our factory and in Argentina with our film crew and pro athletes. What you will receive will be our first production order that uses the tooling developed for the samples. The final product will be beautiful, rugged and live up to all the hype. We promise that.
Support us. We need your help to get us going: to fund production, and continue research and development to make even more tools tailored to the needs of people like you.
Risks and challenges
This is DMOS's first Kickstarter project. However, our team brings heft so we can punch above our weight class. We have already made samples of the Kicker Tool™ from our factory and have modified tooling where we needed to fine tune production. We have another 200 samples coming by early November so we can be sure our product meets our high standards. We have an outstanding factory that has 25 years of related experience, a global supply chain that also brings related experience, and we've placed orders already (sourcing the raw materials now) in advance of our Kickstarter campaign to ensure delivery of a large quantity of orders by February 2016.
We want our customer to be happy with their purchase and proud to support our company and we promise to be fully transparent about when your order will be shipped from the factory.
If all goes well during our funding campaign, we'll finish up with a giant heap of preorders for our Kicker Tool™. Of course, we're trying our hardest to predict our future demand and to plan accordingly by ordering raw materials now before we even launch Kickstarter, but it's far from an exact science. There's no way to know for sure how many units we will sell and we are prepared to scale but production may take an additional 30-90 days.
Supply Chain Risk
We are using an experienced supply chain with an experienced factory and fulfillment partner. However, there is a risk that a container shipment could be delayed for 2 weeks in customs or a batch of new parts doesn't pass QA testing, or our fulfillment schedule—even if padded—can start to slip.
Acts of God
We're based in Jackson Hole. That means the super volcano under Yellowstone could blow or we could have a massive snow storm and no FedEx trucks could get in or out and that would find a lot of desks vacant building jumps up Teton Pass.
Whatever happens, we'll get through it together. We promise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
