About this project
We founded the Tipping Cow ice cream company on the simple idea that food should be fun, delicious, and made only from ingredients that you can pronounce (even without a chemistry degree). Our all-natural ice creams are made with the same ingredients that can be found in any household kitchen: milk, cream, eggs, and sugar, excluding all dyes, stabilizers, and preservatives.
We started our ice-cream-making journey in Massachusetts in 2014, selling our product at farmers markets, and wholesaling to local specialty food stores and grocers. Instantly, our customers fell in love with our richly creamy product and bright unique flavors, such as Strawberry Basil, Sweet Corn, and Vanilla Buttermilk!
Opening up Shop in Somerville
We currently sell Tipping Cow ice creams at local farmers markets in the greater Boston area, and at several wonderful specialty food stores, including Whole Foods (Medford), South End Buttery (Boston), Formaggio Kitchen (Cambridge), and Spirited Gourmet (Belmont). Our customers and retailers have given us a great start, but we are pushing to maximize Tipping Cow’s full potential and open a retail location of our own, from which we can sell pints, scoops, and even ship to any non-locals looking for some all-natural nut-free ice cream!
We are opening the storefront at 415 Medford St, in Somerville, MA, and we need your help to get it up and running! Pledges will go towards permitting, licensing, equipment and rennovations to turn this empty storefront into a local hotspot.

Over the course of growing Tipping Cow, we have discovered that nut-free ice creams are nearly impossible to get your hands on. For someone with an allergy, it can be very difficult to find an ice cream that hasn’t been produced at a facility where it may have come in contact with an allergen. We currently produce our product in a nut-free kitchen, and when we move into our new kitchen and shop in Somerville, we will pursue a nut-free certification. It seems unfair that children and adults with nut allergies should have to miss out on this sweet treat, so at Tipping Cow we are dedicated to ensuring that anyone with an allergy to tree-nuts or peanuts can enjoy our ice cream with confidence!

Risks and challenges
As with any new business, there are risks of setbacks and obstacles in acquiring the necessary licensing and permitting. We are however, working closely with the city of Somerville's planning and health departments to keep everything on track.
